Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's a case of a great idea that didn't have time to fully develop before being hatched. Either way, I really don't understand Localism, the way it works, the way it's suppose to work, or even the value of spending $9 a month on my sponsored city.

I read a post last night from Rich Jacobson about Localism and the changes that have been made for approved content. Evidently, AR had some kind of editorial review group that filtered and approved posts for Localism to insure that the information going on there was consumer driven. But they've abandoned that now in favor of a free for all. Come one come all to Localism. No need for any standard, evidently.

I have so many issues with the site and the concept that I'm not sure where to start. In the spirit of full disclosure, I will admit that I have not learned what I need to know about uploading photos, or what I'm suppose to do now with my sponsored city. But I have been diligent about writing and submitting posts that are about my area.

Rant #1 - We are in a small market in western North Carolina that has long been a destination for seasonal visitors. We also have (had) a strong second home market. But, if you go to Localism, then to North Carolina, it seems Charlotte has now been dubbed the center of the universe and the rest of us are mere specs in orbit around it. It's a cold hard fact that if the information on Localism is a direct result of  what is posted by AR members, we'll never have any real visibility as a featured community, a top city, a top neighbor, a top anything for the sheer fact that Charlotte and other large markets have more agents to feed the system. But is it really in the best interest of the public to have us all in one big pot? Seems like there ought to be a way of offering the consumer some choices. The people that want to know about our area don't want big cities...they want the lifestyle you'll only find in small towns. So how are they suppose to find those small towns? If you look at the list of "popular cities" for North Carolina, you'll see Charlotte up there in big 32 pt type. Then waaaaay down at the bottom is little ole Southern Pines in about 7 pt type. Southern Pines is a lovely area...what's the point with the point size difference? Wow...if Southern Pines is in 7 pt type, you'd need a microscope to see Brevard!

How about a "interactive map" that a consumer can click on to get more information about the cities in a particular region. Right now, except for a few select cities, all the consumer gets is a list of counties to explore. Hmmmm....how many people do you think know that Brevard, for instance is in Transylvania County, but Asheville is in Buncombe County. The same is true for every state on Localism. People don't search for information about counties...they search for information about cities.

Rant #2 - Localism is suppose to be a site where consumers can get more information about an area. Again, open North Carolina and in the first 20 posts, 4 are listings, 1 is a political statement about off shore drilling, 2 are business to business ads, 8 are Realtor ads (pick me! pick me!). Only 4 posts have the kind of information I thought Localism was about. One post had to do with upcoming festivals, one was about area taxes. If the folks at AR want Localism to really be a site that features information about a particular area, and not just another spot to advertise your listings, this isn't it.

Rant #3 - I've posted several things to Localism in the last week, and none of it is on there. Is there an unspoken password, a secret handshake, a protected code that I'm not aware of?

Rant #4 - SPELL CHECK - USE IT!

Rant #5 - What are we spending $9 a month for? I've already admitted that I haven't devoted enough time to my sponsored city information so I went in search of other sponsored cities to see what everyone else is doing. I look in several states, and then to cities that were listed as "popular" (a misleading adverb for sure!) and I could see nothing that would indicate a sponsored city. So what gives? Am I missing something?

Rant #6 - I will refer back to the fact that I've not gotten familiar with loading photos onto Localism...but just the same. Do you really think anyone gives a flip about an entrance sign for a subdivision??? Come on folks, I know you can be more creative than that! I've seen some amazing stuff on AR. How about thinking of things from a consumer's standpoint. How is a picture of a subdivision sign, or some nondescript store front of any value to a consumer? If Localism is left as a free for all, and AR no longer cares about any recognizable standard, I'm sure I can find another way to spend my $9 a month.

Lastly...Charlotte is a great city. One of the best in NC if that's the kind of place you're looking for and my comments were not intended to disparage it or the agents who work there. There is a lot more to NC than Charlotte, though, and if Localism doesn't change, the rest of us can just forget about spending any time fooling with it. If markets like ours are destined to be small fish in a very large pond, I have plenty of other things to do than try and swim upstream on Localism.

I'm with you...Localism was supposed to be new and improved, but so far it's not working out that way. It's almost the WILD WEST and I thought I would give them a little time to fix the problems, but as I don't see that happening, I won't be paying for my neighborhoods again.

You folks have to look at this from AR's point of view - another way to monetize this.

I agree with you Carol. I have done all that I thought I was supposed to do. Written about things that are happening RIGHT now in the area...and most of what is posted are things that are months old and woefully out of date, while some of my new posts have yet to pull up. I am like you, I keep thinking that I am doing something wrong, but perhaps its just the AR system getting "blogged down" with the constant activity on th e site?  I have sponsored one of the local towns, and set up a great blog post to go with it and it just showed up as a new blog post on Localism site. I have also been searching in the FAQ segments trying to find the answers and so far, nothing to really answer our questions. Hopefully someone like Brad or one of the other AR gurus will come up with a posting on the issues soon.

Me too Jody....I love Brad..he's always been so responsive to every thing I've ever asked him about. So hopefully he or Rich can address some of these issue.

I've wondered what fuels AR financially, and maybe this is it, I don't know. I fully realize that Localism is a work in progress and I give AR props for recognizing that and always trying to improve on what they're already doing. I'm optimistic that with enough feedback from members, we'll see some improvements. If not, then it would be my choice to spend my time in other areas. It's a choice we all have.

I have seen disappearing content, there one moment gone the next, and "top neighbors" that simply post a picture and the first blog, nothing else.

I am sure (hopeful) it will evolve into something special.

Rant #2 was great; The problem with user supplied content is usually the users, I too am sick of seeing oversized photos of the same house in "neighborhood" sections; I wish some of these agents would move over. But again look at what many people post just to get points on AR, trash.

Content is not AR's problem is ours, they provide the platform, we and our peers provide the content. Our industry has never figured out how to build a lure for the fish, we build it for the fisherman. Oh well.

Please post about the secret handshake when you figure it out!!!

I, too, am in a small town. In AZ, the "center of the universe" is Phoenix. The way I understand it, AR is figuring that, down the road, they will have enough Google juice that when someone types in Payson, AZ (my town) the Localism for that town will pull up high in the rankings on Google. It isn't happening now. What DOES come up, however, (along with our independent web sites) are posts which I have made about Payson. WHen I post them to my AR blog they then show up on Google within hours. They show up well, then slowly fall to further pages. This is NOT a link to the posts on Localism, but to the posts in my blog. So I will keep posting them, and I will put them on Localism, too, in case it starts showing up. But I did not pay to sponsor my town. Another agent did, but she hardly ever posts, so I am showing as the top neighbor. Works for me.

Is there an unspoken password, a secret handshake, a protected code that I'm not aware of?

Uh oh!  You missed the sign up sheet when they passed out the Localism decoder rings?  :)

Hi Carol,

All joking aside, I think Leslie Prest hit the nail on the head.  From what I'm seeing, agents and brokers who make good informational posts about their market will be the ones who generate new business from Localism - just like they're already creating new business from Active Rain posts.

Respectfully,

Bruce

Hi Clay Team...

Great Post.

I was born in Charlotte.

Are you REALLY spending nine bucks a month?

Your blog is great!!!!  Where do you find the time?

Let's do lunch.

Hey Isaac,

I totally agree. I can't imagine living anywhere else. Part of me wants to keep it a secret though!!

As for the $9 a month...that's a Localism thing. In case you weren't following all the hype about the land rush, a few weeks back there was an opportunity to "sponsor" (aka buy) neighborhoods. If an area is under 40,000 people, like Brevard, you could sponsor the entire city...which is what I did. The way it's suppose to work is when someone finds Brevard on Localism, there is suppose to be a section dedicated to the sponsor...in this case, the Clay Team. But so far I haven't figured it all out. So for now, they get my $9 a month, but I'm on the fence about it.

And since selling real estate has become a hit and miss activity these days, I find lots of time to blog. It's become quite catharic.

Nice to see you playing in the rain again!

I agree with all of your rants!  I did sign up for a few smaller towns outside of Wilmington, NC, yey have not been able to find my info I wrote about them???  Where did all that go?  If you find out let me know.  I will give it a couple of months before I will give it up.  Thanks

Don't you mean CATHARTIC?

08/27/2008 04:08 PM by Isaac

You know how you use a word all your life and have attached a certain meaning to it? Well cathartic is one of those words. Aside from me misspelling it (I was in a hurry...doesn't that count), I just looked it up in the dictionary to double check the spelling. Catharasis, the word you find right above it, is a lovely word and refers to relieving of emtions through arts or psychotherapy. (That's the second definition and the one I choose to go with.) Go to cathartic and it is...shall we say way too graphic and as much as people use that word to describe letting go of our emotions, according my dictionary, it is something all together more physical.

Suffice it to say that, for me, AR is a great outlet for all sorts of thoughts. Let's leave it at that! LOL

To everyone here who is following this....let it be said that I'm not one to rant without reason. But ranting without resolution just leads to heartburn.  So....I've been looking into this and have found a couple of helpful links for everyone who is as Localism challenged as I am. I'm still in the process of digesting what I'm reading, but I thought it would be good to pass along:

There is also a new post by Rich in the Art of Marketing You group that has step two.

Hi Carol,

I have been posting to Localism as much as I can and have had pretty good success getting my stuff on there but the latest change has me really confused. If I use the Ctrl 1 or 2 etc for my font changes, the words don't make it to the Localism page. It is just a lot of blank. Pictures and standard fonts come through ok, but it sure makes some strange posts. No help from the help people after 3 days.

Keep up the good work.

Hey Fred,

Well you're ahead of me for sure! Last night, the comments above, I added a link I found about how to get Localism set up. It's a place to start I guess. I've never had much luck with changing font sizes. They always end up too huge.

Do you know how to load pictures onto Localism? I posted two things this afternoon. I'm curious to see if they show up! Nothing else I've done has.

On rant #6, you're missing the whole point. Photos is a huge element of defining Localism, not just the information which of course is more important but photos give the consumer the visual of an area, the neighborhood, style of homes, etc...people like to see pictures of what we're talking about. I'd get on that quick.

08/28/2008 03:30 PM by Chris & Maria Jeantet ~ Redding Realtors (Real Estate Professionals, GMAC)

This is what is so confusing to me about Localism. If you read Rich's blog, this site should be a whole lot more than just another place to put listing information. There is plenty of other opportunity for that. As I read things, the type of info that they are looking for pertain to things outside the world of real estate. Things like community events, recreation, scenery. I guess you could build a case for having information about a particular neighborhood in a general way. But nonetheless....I still say a photo of the entrance to a subdivision isn't my idea of quality content.
