One of the first things we're taught in real estate is to market to our sphere of influence.  Our friends, family, acquaintances form the backbone of our business when we first get started.

Don't you just remember your first day on the job when your broker asked you to take out a yellow pad and start writing down the names of everyone you knew?  That was my introduction to Real Estate 101.

Fast forward to today.  Social Networking.  We're all doing it.  We're on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Plaxo, LinkedIn, you name it... And yes, Active Rain.

How about keeping it in the family?

Yes, social networking for the family.  Your family.  It's the Facebook for Families.

It's GENI -- www.geni.com

Geni

One of my second cousins set up a family tree about a week ago and e-mailed me and my wife a link to join.  Since then, we've both been addicted to entering in the information we have about our family members on the tree.

GENI allows you to build a family tree, learn your family history and reconnect with long lost relatives.

Brian's family tree

More than that, it also allows you to enter detailed information about yourself -- yes, a profile.  You can upload photos, videos, and more.  Links to your websites and blogs.

Keep it in your family.

And make sure to let all those family members know that you sell real estate.

Brian- wow, that looks like a great site, I'll have to check it out.  Also I never had to do that yellow pad of people thing....guess I was just lucky :)

Yes, I have to say I never got cornered by my broker to do the list thing either.  I wouldn't have had much to share.  I started out of the gate with the Internet.

Brian, my mother's family tree is full of rogues and rascals.  My father's is full of history and founders and all that.  My sister got us invited to a family reunion of a part of my Dad's family tree that we have never really met.  It'll be in October, and of course, I'll bring business cards!

That website looks pretty cool and I can see how it can be addicting!

I just played around with that site and it is really cool.  Thaks so much for sharing it. My sister has been putting together the family tree info and this takes it to the next level.

Brian- What a neat idea. I think we all have had, somewhere in the back of our mind , the desire to do a family tree. Now we can. Thanks for sharing

Brian,

Thank you for featuring Geni in this post. You bring up another great reason for people to start their family trees on Geni and invite their family. One request in the past has been to aggregate all of the family members occupations onto a list format. Therefore, in your case, if a family member is looking to buy a house, they can look through the list and would see that their second cousin which is maybe you, can help them. Great idea. Once again, thank you for the post and the use case.

Thank you,

Keith

Like your post Brian. Did not know about this site. Networking within the family makes sense so long as there is no family feud brewing!

Sounds like a great way to get the family to contribute information that everyone would be interested in.

This looks very cool. My wife's family is research very wide and deep. My family? Not so much. There are some great sites that make this a lot easier (and actually funner) than before. I'm definitely going to check this one out.

That is too cool and I'm sending that to my wife who has been looking for something like this for awhile now.

Brian~What a great idea...Wouldn't it be great to know that you have a long-lost relative who won the lottery and is looking to invest in Real Estate. No really, I think it's a great idea to connect with family and didn't know a tool such as this existed. Thanks for sharing!

Wow- bringing the family tree into the technology age! What a wonderful thing to do. My husband is related to almost everyone in this small town we live in and we don't know most of them. Maybe I can get one of his aunts to take charge of this!

08/28/2008 01:27 PM by Mandi Perkins (AZ Big Sky Realty, Inc.)

My first real estate sale was to my sister, the second to a friend and the third because of social networking- so I think I am following the right progression!

This is a great idea Brian....do you mind if I make like a tree and leave to get my own family tree started.  looks like it could be great fun.  I don't need another addiction however the for or five I already have is plenty.  Nice family post.

Brian,

This looks fascinating...I'm really into studying my family history along with my Dad and this will work great for all of the widespread family members to add their info.

Thanks for blogging about this!

Thanks for the information.  I'll have to check it out.  I just don't like having all of this person information out on the web for any hacker to have access to.
