This morning "The listing machine" had a story he wanted me to blog about.  It's a true story and can happen to anyone.  Recently he has been working with one of his customers to purchase some vacant land.  Now his customer has a house to sell it was placed on craigslist.  He placed it there..and was shocked at what he had found.

This is not one case of this there are several on Ebay right now!

While going through ebay this same customer found his property on ebay..not placed there by him or by the listing machine.

While looking at the ebay listing it was his own words...his pictures...and definitely his house lifted from his posting on craigslist.

So who is selling it?  It isn't him but someone else he does not know, a scam trying to get people to bid high for an escrow deposit.

Please, be very careful and check your city..it seems that they are going after unsuspecting FSBO's generally never been listed in the MLS

As this story unfolds we will be sharing with you!

This is just another reason to list with a REALTOR!

35 Comments on Warning-Craigslist..Fraud and Ebay! Be Very Careful, Warn Property Owners!

Wow, some people will do anything to make a buck, including fraud, I wonder what ebay is going to do about that.  Have a great day!

Wow I have never heard of that before.  It does make a good scam. Very tricky.

Thanks for the heads up we will be sure to bookmark this to share in the future as needed.

Wow, this is unfortunate to hear. I hope it works out. Keep us posted as to how this unfolds.

There was a story on the news here just last night about some poor woman who got scammed on ebay over a car. I guess you can do the same with a house. What a world!

This is good to be aware of. I can't believe the things people do to scam others.

08/25/2008 11:05 AM by Chuck Carstensen (Re/max Associates Plus/The Discovery Coach)

Definitely keep us posted on this one.  One wonders how successful these people might be if they spent the same amount of time thinking up honest ways to make money.

There is no doubt that this will be investigated...so when I know for sure that I am able to talk openly about it.  I will..these types of scams need to be exposed and stopped!

p.s.  I saw it with my own eyes..we decided not to post the links..hopefully the FBI will get involved.

Thanks for sharing...  I've been getting spammed recently in conjunction with ebay...  I'm amazed at the lengths that people will go to try and scam people.

Wow. It never ceases to amaze me, what some people can come up with. I would have never even thought of most of the stories I hear.

Hi Midori, I am shocked, but not suprised, the lack of integrity and the willingness to make money anyway is  just hard to comprehend. I suggest do not wait for the FBI to discover it.Call them up or email them.

Midori, this one is just weird! I've seen quite a few ads on Ebay for property such as this. I didn't realize it could be a scam though...go figure. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the warning.  It is amazing the lengths people will go to scam other folks.

Endre-It would be worse if I affected someone of being prosecuted.  I believe in order to stop this type of nonsense is to let the proper authorities handle it.  I definitely do not want to interfere.  We need to end scams not stop them temporarily.  So if the real seller of this house opts to contact the FBI ...sorry I am not touching it!

I cannot believe the amount of acamming going on in the internet. If those scammers spent as much time putting thier knowledge to good things they may find themselves much richer. Hopefully Karma will get them before they hurt anyone financially.

There are always people out there who can out think us and will attempt to separate us from our money.  Instead of buying homes on ebay and craig's list, maybe securing the services of a Realtor would be the most responsible way to purchase a new home.

This is the downside of Internet technology....its literally green pastures for a new breed of cyber-criminals & fraudulent thieves.  I hope these guys get caught.

Great post, Midori. Good warning. Nice reminder to remain vigilant because the scumbags are out there stalking the listings and looking for ways to move stealthily. Thanks.

I just had an email sent to me which looked like it was from ebay saying that I owed for my last purchase.  I have not made a purchase in 6 months.  This scam email wants you to click on the email and logon to your account via their email therefore getting your account info.

Watch out!

Just one more thing to be concerned about.  Thank you ma'am for the heads up.

Wow - thieves sure get creative, don't they?  I heard yesterday of scam artists renting out foreclosed properties to unsuspecting tenants...now this....what's next?

Thanks for the post.  I've listed on Craig's List and had some really strange emails.  I haven't had a serious buyer come from Craig's List and the inquiries were mostly other people trying to market a service.  I did post a blog that warned about a similar Craig's List scam.

08/26/2008 07:41 AM by Jon Wnoroski, Summit County Realtor (Geneva Chervenic Realty, Inc.)

Imagine if these same people used their creative ability for good...who knows they might even make more money!

Hi Midori,

I am a big fan of Craigslist and eBay but find this highly disturbing.

How is the best way to find out if my listings are being scammed?

08/26/2008 07:31 PM by Brenda Harmon (Century 21 Beal, Inc College Station, Texas)

This is what the seller did...he took a look at his listing on Craigslist and then he decided to check out property in his area..on ebay..the only property there was his...his ad from craigslist was word for word on ebay and someone else advertising for bids on the escrow deposit.  He tested a few others...showed the listing machine and the listing machine..relayed the message to me and wanted me to share it with the community!  Hope this helps oh and they figured out...the target was properties that have never been in the mls..FSBO's

08/26/2008 08:26 PM by Midori Miller-Daytona Beach Florida Real Estate Trainer (CENTURY 21 Sundance Realty)

Thanks for the post.I will check my listings. Good luck .
