Boys on Bed

I think that you know my answer from the pictuBaxter Howlre!

Our first dog, Bailey, was sweet and quiet and adjusted well to crate training at night and when we were not home. We just had to do it for the first couple of "puppy brain" years.

He was so good that we got a second "child." We picked Baxter because he was sweet and quiet. That is until we got some food in him and this dog barked for everything! Needless to say, crate training did not go nearly as well. Baxter barked and whined and cried some more! The second night we wrapped an alarm clock in a towel and put it in a pouch so he could be soothedBaxter Alarm by the fake beating heart so he would not miss his mother.

Not Baxter, he ripped it up and tore it to shreds and then barked some more!

After the 3rd night of no sleep, we gave in and let him sleep on our bed. Well, he still sleeps in the bed. He has even convinced the "good dog" to join us on occasion.

Thank goodness for king sized beds!

Do you let your dogs sleep on your bed?

Lara ... How beautiful are your dogs!? I can't blame you for being a sucker. ;-) I have a Bailey too. And a Gracie. No ... they do not sleep with me. They sleep in their beds with blankies, in the kitchen with the gate up. I am a terrible sleeper and wake too easily. I sleep with three full blast noise machines and Ambien. I won't lose sleep for anybody. Dogs don't like a cranky mommy.

What gorgeous dog!  I have a bichon and bichon/poodle mix and they both sleep on the bed.  I wouldn't have it any other way.  And for such little dogs (compared to yours) they sure know how to hog the bed!

08/24/2008 08:39 PM by Connie Watts - Omaha Homes for Sale / Offutt AFB Homes, Omaha NE (Prudential Ambassador Real Estate)

Labs and Goldens...gotta love them...after the first 3 years!  We had a Golden (Candy) that was wonderful.  When we had to let her go, I swore that we were not going to get a breed that could clear off a coffee table with one sweep of their tail.  We got 2 (we never have just one dog) English Springer Spaniels and they have been terrific! They are limited to the family room or kitchen. HOWEVER, contrary to every other dog we have ever had, they end up on the couch with me every night!

08/24/2008 08:42 PM by Paula Swayne, Realtor Older Classic Homes Specialist (Windermere Dunnigan Realtors, Sacramento)

Dogs are awesome. We used to let our black lab sleep lay by us for a little bit when we went to bed. But then she grew up and got big. Now she sleeps on the floor right next to the bed.

08/24/2008 08:53 PM by

Sharon, I am so "owned" by my dogs! Lucky for me, I can sleep through anything. Plus I trained them to ask my husband if they need to go out :-)~

08/24/2008 08:54 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Connie, I think that they are all bed hogs. It's just hotter when they are bigger!

08/24/2008 08:55 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Paula, Springer Spaniels are a beautiful breed! I bet they can clear off a coffee table just as well as a Golden. I try to explain to guests if they have wine glasses, but they never believe me until it's too late!

We manage to keep ours off the couch, but Baxter jumps on your lap in the recliner with just his back paws on the floor. Even the top half of him is pretty heavy. He's 90 lbs total.

08/24/2008 09:00 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Beautiful dogs. Unfortunately no dogs on my bed but I wake up every morning with six cats on my bed.

08/24/2008 09:00 PM by Linda Mae McCannon (20th Century Realty)

Black labs are just as sweet. We've pet sitted a couple of times. We need to get Baxter out of the habit, but he just sneaks back up after we're asleep. He's too smart for his own good!

08/24/2008 09:02 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Linda, I have been there and done that with cats on the bed! I had a Tabbie with claws that would attack my feet when I moved them ... not fun. My Siamese would just squeak if I rolled on her for a second.

08/24/2008 09:04 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

My Sheltie, Sundance, pretty well has the run of the house but rarely sleeps on the bed. His pet bed is at the foot of the bed, but he sleeps a bunch of different places -- on his bed, on the side of the bed, on the couch, or on the tile entryway in the living room. For all that he's given me over the years, I think he's earned that privelege.

08/24/2008 09:04 PM by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

None of our dogs do....bur I do confess we have a couple of bed kitties for feet warmers. :0)

08/24/2008 09:34 PM by Trey Thurmond, College Station , Texas Homes (Classic Realty Inc./GMAC Real Estate)

My dog loves to sleep on the bed when we are gone during the day.  I'll come home and walk in the bedroom and the covers will be all messed up and the pillows are thrown off the bed.

08/24/2008 09:42 PM by Cheryl Winn (Keller Williams Realty)

Lara, I had to confess, GUILTY!!  We have an 8 year old lab who has just recently quit getting on the bed but I think it is because it is getting too hard for her to get up there.  She use to bark at the UPS man from the bed.

08/24/2008 09:48 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Lara- My Chloey sleeps in our bed when it is thundering outside, which is ok because she gets scared. Other than that, unless Ashlee calls her up she sleeps in her own bed. Yeah shes spoiled, she has a custom bed me and her grandpa made out of Maple, with a doggy mattress and 2 layers of orthopedic foam, nothing but the best and most comfortable for my child :-D

I love your goldens they are so cute, can't say I blame you for letting them sleep in the bed :-D

08/24/2008 09:58 PM by Chris Horton (Horton's Lawn Care L.L.C.)

Our pups don't sleep in our bed, but three of our five cats do.  I think they can be just as bad, if not worse :)

08/24/2008 10:00 PM by Jim & Maria Hart ~ Charleston, SC Real Estate (Agent Owned Realty)

John, it seems that they all just want to be close to us ... their pack.

08/24/2008 10:12 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Trey, bed kitties make good feet warmers and CATS do not tend to snore! Score one for cats.

08/24/2008 10:13 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Cheryl, are you sure it's the dog on your bed when you're not home? We used to come home and see the dog's silouette on the chair looking out the window for us. We never did catch him in the act!

08/24/2008 10:16 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Marchel, Baxter still barks at UPS, FedEx, or neighbor kids from the bed. He won't get up until Bailey goes to the front door to bark. Then it's just a competition!

08/24/2008 10:18 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Chris, maybe I should commission a couple of pampered pooch beds from Michigan? Maybe Ashlee lets Chloey on the bed when you're asleep and sneaks her off before you're awake. The perfect crime :-)

08/24/2008 10:26 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Jim & Maria, I think that you would run of of room if you had both cats and dogs on the bed. The dogs are not dumb; they know that the cats are in charge!

08/24/2008 10:28 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

We have a Golden.  I don' like it but my wife lets her sleep in our bed.

08/25/2008 07:21 AM by Tim Maitski~editor of MaitskiREport.com (HomeAtlanta.com)

Tim, as long as you keep your wife happy there will be peace at home :-)

08/25/2008 11:32 AM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Our dog is a 105lb Black lab who likes to spread out.  He doesn't sleep with us on the bed, but come morning time, he jumps up and sleeps with us until we wake up.  I love it!

08/25/2008 02:34 PM by Spokane Home Loan -- Casey Brischle -- Mortgage Professional (Bank of Whitman)

Casey, that's a big puppy! I bet he keeps you warm in your cold winters!

08/25/2008 05:01 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Lara- If I come do end up moving down there I will build you a few no problem.... It is actually built just like a real bed only smaller :-D I know Ashlee doesn't let her on the bed while I am sleeping, she goes to bed a few hours before I do lol But once in a while she will come lay with us until I go to bed then I tell her to go lay down in her bed and she does like the good little girl she is :-D

08/25/2008 05:19 PM by Chris Horton (Horton's Lawn Care L.L.C.)

Lara, Your dogs are beautiful! I have a golden retreiver as well, Gus!  My first golden, Lulu, slept with me each and every night. I loved it. Gus doesn't sleep with me, but lays right by the bed....Goldens are the best, aren't they?

08/25/2008 05:24 PM by Huntsville, Alabama Real Estate Agent Elizabeth Ramsey Cooper-Golden (Remax Huntsville/Madison)

Chris, you just love your dog. I don't think she could ever do anything bad in your eyes. Be glad that your fiancee is an animal lover too. Maybe Chloey can have a friend one day :-)

08/25/2008 05:40 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Elizabeth, thank you, You're sweet. I do love goldens and cannot imagine my life without them. I bet Gus is a big sweetheart!

08/25/2008 05:45 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Lara, Of course my dog sleeps on my bed, under the covers!  Unfortunately, the bed (queen size) came before the dog, so there are many nights that I hang at the edge of the bed!  I don't think a bigger bed would matter anyway because she has to be smashed up against somebody all the time!

08/25/2008 05:55 PM by Roberta LaRocca REALTOR® Las Vegas Broker - Salesperson (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

LAra- I do definitly love my dog :-D Ohhh she can definitly do bad, like go in the pond so much that installing one of those invisible fences was cheaper to install (we fenced in about 3 acres for her) than a years supply of dog shampoo lol Ashlee was kind of mad at me for bringing her home....a neighbor of one of my clients had a litter and they were going to take the pups to the human society so I asked if they wanted to sell one to me, they said take your pick you can have it, so I took Chloey and my dad took her sister Princess we didn't call to make sure it was ok just brought them home.... but its ok because Ashlee and my mom fell in love with the girls :-D They hang out alot together, and my fiancees parents have 2 dogs too, but Ashlee already told me whenever we do move I can get another dog to keep Chloey company (I want a blue pitbull lol). J/W are there any dog parks down there in TX where they could meet new friends? :-D

08/25/2008 06:58 PM by Chris Horton (Horton's Lawn Care L.L.C.)

Hi,

Yes I do have a bed partner he is a English bulldog Bruno. Bruno can snore with the best of them lets say he gets kicked several times a night. And if anyone has a bulldog you know how loud they snore.

    Tinker

08/25/2008 06:58 PM by Tinker Hulsey Century 21 Indian Realty Jonesboro Ark (Century 21 Indian Realty)

Roberta, it sounds like you have a bed mate and a heat pad rolled into one. I try to push Baxter on my husband when he's not looking. It works most of the time.

08/25/2008 07:15 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Chris, that would be a whole lot of dog shampoo! At least yours has short hair and dries quickly. Ours take forever to dry. If they had a pond, they would live in it like bull frogs! They would only come home to eat. There are lots of dog parks here. We have good weather (no snow) so we can use them all year. Texans like their dogs! Goes with the pick up truck :-)

08/25/2008 07:18 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Tinker, Bruno probably sounds like he's snoring just when he's breathing. I can only imagine how loud he must get! Maybe it's really you snoring and you're blaming poor Bruno!

08/25/2008 07:20 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Lara- Yeah the dog shampoo we use is $10 for a tiny little amount (it would last about a week on Chloey with daily baths lol), but it smells great, not that that matters much since we have doggy perfume for her too lol The no snow thing would be kind of weird at first, I can't remember the last Christmas without snow lol The dog parks thing sounds cool, unfortunately we don't have any around here and alot of the parks ban animals here :-( Chloey would love that though she loves meeting new people and dogs.... Do Texans love pitbulls (they are my favorite breed lol), I've already got the truck (just a small F- 150, well small compared to them big texan farmers trucks I am sure) :-D

08/25/2008 08:03 PM by Chris Horton (Horton's Lawn Care L.L.C.)

Lara-Our pup Bubby sleeps on the bed with us every night. She loves to snuggle and cuddle with us. She also lets us know when she needs to go to the bathroom by whining and if we ignore her. She gets pretty indignant as if to say, listen to me will ya.

08/25/2008 09:12 PM by Pat Preston (RE/MAX 1st Olympic)

Chris, you've got the truck and I've got the little red convertible. maybe we could work out a time share. I think most people here like all breeds. I think that pitts get a bad reputation from jerks who fight them. I really like boxers too because they seem so smart. I have to laugh that Chloey's sister is a pitt/boxer mix named Princess. Isn't that like a doberman named Tinkerbell? Just playing ...

08/25/2008 09:14 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Pat, Bubby sounds like a cuddle bug. I recognize that "listen to me" persistent whine!

We actually bought a doggy translater (toy) that fits on their collar and it said "look at me and why aren't you listening to me?" when he whined. It was hilarious!

08/25/2008 09:22 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Lara,

Its a CONSIPRACY...hehehe they never tell you before hand that the pets of the world, especially dog style fur babies are all out to TRAIN we humans to do their bidding...sleep on the bed?? Are you kidding? They sleep under the quilts and on their own feather pillows! Thanks for the cute post and the photos of your babies as well.

08/25/2008 09:30 PM by Jody Jones Your Elkhart IN Real Estate Agent (Century 21 Landmark Realty)

Jody, what a great picture! What are their names? They totally rule that bed! Don't let them talk to my dogs because pillows and blankets are not part of their deal. Although, I have caught them on my pillow once I'm up. As long as it's the "good end" on the pillow, then I am okay with it!

08/25/2008 09:41 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Lara,  That would be Nicky on top of the pillows and Squirt peeking out from behind. Tons of fun, I wouldnt know what to do without my buddies along for the ride!

08/25/2008 09:49 PM by Jody Jones Your Elkhart IN Real Estate Agent (Century 21 Landmark Realty)

LAra- I don't think we could do that, during the summer I need my truck for work. Unfortunately (well for driving a convertible) I have lawns I bag and put the grass clippings in the bed of the truck, dirt, and other landscaping goods as well, I don't think you would appreciate that lol. And wheres the joy in driving a convertible during the winter (up here anyways where it snows??) lol

Yeah Pits do have a bad rep from idiots, however the media doesn't help as many of the human attacks reported as being pitbulls are not actually pitbulls (it takes alot to actually turn a pit against a human and they don't even make good guard dogs). Pits and Boxers are both really smart, and beautiful :-D Speaking of dog names that don't fit.... One of my cousins actually had a 195 lb (at 9 months old) Rottweiler names Buddy, and its nickname was tiny (because he was actually the runt of the litter) LOL

08/25/2008 10:15 PM by Chris Horton (Horton's Lawn Care L.L.C.)

Lara, Have you seen that commercial where a dog that looks suspicously like yours gets the man up and out of bed and then the last shot shows the dog all spread out on the bed, pillow under his head?? Are you sure you know what your guys do when you aren't home? hmmmmmm GRIN

08/25/2008 10:35 PM by Jody Jones Your Elkhart IN Real Estate Agent (Century 21 Landmark Realty)

Jody, Nicky & Squirt (cute name) are great and their personalities both show in your photo!

08/25/2008 11:05 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Chris, now a Rottweiller named Buddy/Tiny is still pretty funny!

It's like ... "Meet my dog Fabio, he's part wolf!"

08/25/2008 11:09 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Jody, I just knew that was one of my dogs!!!

I would like to know where the royalty checks are being sent? I refuse to give up my bed so he can just blow it on the first bi#ch that comes along!

08/25/2008 11:12 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Woof BedThis is how Baxter "conned" his way onto our bed!

"I'm so cute. I'm so lonely. I have to sleep in your bed."

Yes, he trained us!

08/26/2008 12:43 AM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

How cute! Yours dogs are adorable.  The only and last dog to sleep on my bed was my miniature collie who has gone up to heaven and looking down at me.  She was the best mannered dog ever and I still miss her and think about her.

08/26/2008 01:20 AM by Tina Farinas REALTOR®, e-PRO (MagnumOne Realty)

Tina, I cannot imagine what it will be like one day when I lose Bailey & Baxter. I still think that it's better that I had them in my life for the short time they are with me. I'm glad that the pictures reminded you of your sweet miniature collie.

08/26/2008 10:07 AM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

I always thought animals were meant to sleep on the bed, We have a 6 year old choclate lab , (Eddie) prior to That it was a black lab named max. Eddie was given to us a by some freinds after we lost another dog, we too have always had 2 dogs, and although I have yet to find a dog I don't love Labs are absolutely awesome.

08/26/2008 10:24 AM by Charlene Sandoval Relocation and Real Estate Gig Harbor Washington (Keller williams West sound )

Tina,  Your collie misses you too, I am sure. Its never easy to say goodbye to our fur babies!

Richard..CATS???   although I do have 2 gran-kitties and they are mostly adorable as well, I cannot deal with the kitty litter or the shedding.

Charlene, I love pretty much all dogs, but like the smaller breeds best, less food to buy, less poop to scoop, less room taken up in the bed...LOL

08/26/2008 11:10 AM by Jody Jones Your Elkhart IN Real Estate Agent (Century 21 Landmark Realty)

Charles, Labs do have some very lovable personalities. We have a chocolate and a black lab next door that I sneak them treats thru the hole in the fence.

08/26/2008 01:04 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Jody, I relate on the poop scooping. Big dogs mean more poop. We use Scoopa Da Poopa service :-)

08/26/2008 01:06 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Rocco is a 120 pound rotweiller and yes, he sleeps on our bed. We have a king size bed and he sleeps between us across the bed, sometimes pushing us to the edge. I don't care. They are not with us that long and he is going to have the best life he can.

08/26/2008 06:04 PM by Ray Henderson (Weichert Realtors' Northeast Group)

JoLynn, cats know that we are all here to serve them!

08/26/2008 06:32 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Oh my Lara... that has been a long time ago.. I used to have 3 Rots and the 2 females truly believed that I belonged on the floor and they belonged in the bed... They would get up there in the middle of the night and push me out of bed....

08/26/2008 06:34 PM by Roland Woodworth "Clarksville-Fort Campbell Area Realtor" (Exit Realty Clarksville)

I have a Bichon, and he sleeps on the bed.  I did draw the line though on sleeping on my head.  He thinks that my pillow is better than the mattress and he has a tendancy to push me off my pillow,  and putting his pillow at the end of the bed is not good enough.  For now he has a pillow between my husband and me.

08/28/2008 04:30 PM by Brady Barnard (Realty World Alliance)

Brady, at least my dog has not taken over our pillows yet. Please don't let your bad influence dog give my dog any more ideas. I am totally just kidding :-)~

08/28/2008 07:11 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Your babies are sooooo cute!!! 2 of my dogs get in the bed with me in the mornings as soon as my huband's feet hit the floor...not enough room for all of us. There's always 2 cats sleeping on top of me, they don't get anywhere close to my husband's side of the bed though...they know they would get the boot.

08/28/2008 08:48 PM by Jackie Kyles (Keller Williams Realty)

Oh my goodness, even with a king-sized bed, there is no way the Fuzzy-butt is sleeping with us!!! A full size, very long haired GSD is just too much. Besides, with a satin bedspread, he'd go sliding right off!!! Nope, the place for him is in the kitchen, in his "cave". Helps to keep him "in his place" so to speak. Only alpha pack members get to be on furniture and such. He loves his cave and goes running for it when it's "time for bed".

08/29/2008 09:40 AM by Meegan Ehrlich, REALTOR® (Coldwell Banker Real Estate)

Jackie, thank you. The pets always know which ones of us are the push overs.

08/29/2008 12:09 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Meegan, that's so funny. We call ours fuzzy butt sometimes too. We were the alphas with the first dog, but then Mr. Vocal came along and broke us of our good behavior.

08/29/2008 12:11 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Not only in my bed but on my bent legs so I don't ever move in fear of disturbing her!

08/30/2008 09:10 PM by Tracy Soussi -Waterfront & Gated Community Specialist (Wingfoot Real Estate)

My dogs and cats have always been allowed to sleep on the bed. Cats, however, cannot sleep in cabinets where dishes are stored.

Zoey the cool cat

Nor are they allowed on the piano, on the dining table, on the kitchen countertop, or on the top of the refrigerator since they have to make an intermediate stop on the kitchen countertop.

Dogs are so much easier. Tell me again why I have cats.

08/31/2008 05:00 AM by Russel Ray, San Diego Marketing & Business Consultant (Russel Ray)

Tracy, I had a cat like that. She would jump on my lap the second I sat down. It makes for a good excuse to ask your husband to bring you drinks and stuff :-)

08/31/2008 01:20 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Russel, that's a great picture! My cats had the same rules, althuogh I found evidence at times that the rules had been broken. My cat would snuggle on top of the tiny space on the VCR.

Russel, you don't have cats, they own you, remember?

08/31/2008 01:23 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

Hello Lara, Yep...my 9 year old cocker spaniel Coco sleeps with me and my husband every night!  My 20 & 22 year old daughters moved back in a couple of months ago and now their 2 year old cocker spaniel Skyy sleeps with us sometimes as well.  Like you said...thank goodness for KING SIZE BEDS!

09/01/2008 10:59 PM by Cheryl Powell - ABR, Broker, Realtor - Remax Gold - Concord NC Real Estate (RE/MAX Gold - The Powell Team)

Cheryl, what a great picture! They are so shiny that they almost look like stuffed animals. I bet at least one of them snores :-)

09/02/2008 07:08 PM by Lara O'Keefe (McKinney Greens-Golf Course Community) (DR Horton Homes)

I was laughing while reading this because your scenario is almost exactly the same as my scenario.  Our baby boy Brodie was the same as Baxter.  I usually won't let him in bed while I'm trying to go to sleep, but he just waits until we are asleep and then gets in bed with us anyway.  Ali doesn't really like to be touched while she is sleeping, but will crawl in sometimes early in the morning.  On top of all this, we have a queen, not a king!  And Ali and Brodie weigh about 75 lbs each.

Ali & Brodie

Sparky & Bo sleeping with Chris on the couchIt's funny, we never let our kids (that's the youngest in the photo) sleep in our bed but now 3 out of 5 of our dogs sleep with us.  As you can see - they pretty much own the house and sleep where ever they want to in addition to the bed!  Holly & BoThe Boston Terrier is an absolute BRAT!
