I had the chance to talk on the phone today with Paul Dunn from First Priority Financial out of Tucson Arizona.  He's putting together a Podcast for Mortgage Brokers.  He's also a member of TBWS of which I am good friends.  The topic for our upcoming Podcast is ActiveRain and Localism.  We explored some great ideas on how members and non members of ActiveRain will be able to best utilize a site like Localism.  One of the concepts/analogies we came up with was pretty good, as it relates to neighborhoods, communities and Localism.

Why is it that when an ambulance or firetruck stops on our street with the sirens blaring and the lights flashing, we always have to run outside to see what's happening?  It seems like this is the only time we connect or get involved with meeting the neighbors and socializing with the community.  I admit it, somehow, I can manage hundreds of emails, phone calls, numerous comments on Blogs, respond to tweets, even read my fun-wall on Facebook, all in a single day, yet I have never met or found the time to talk to the neighbors just two doors down or even the ones across the street. :-(

Localism is all about being local.  It's about getting out and connecting with the people in neighborhoods off-line so that we can bring back the content and  share it on-line with others.  Connecting with people is what makes a community so fun and exciting to be part of.  That's why the ActiveRain Network is so vibrant and still growing.  It's also turned out to be a great place to grow our business and relationships.  I think Localism will be is the "Golden Ticket" to getting into doors that we may have never considered in the past.  Seriously, imagine the possibilities...

The Localism Blog that you've worked so hard to create and establish, can now be the very tool that will open doors and opportunities for you to share, plus benefit both your business and your neighborhoods.  The content available in your community and maybe even on your own street is priceless.  Don't wait to hear sirens and see flashing lights coming down your street to get out there and meet and greet your neighbors.  This is the best time to be proactive.  Use Localism to gather and share information.  Make it more than just another community website, make it a "NeighborPedia."

So When was the last time you talked to your neighbors?
Do you know them?  When was the last neighborhood Block Party or BBQ?  Who recently brought you cookies or knocked on your door to borrow some flour?  See?  Are we really connecting to the off-line world as much as we should?  Shouldn't they be on-line with us?  I think Localism is going to be one of the best ways to open doors, connect with people locally, provide valuable and useful content, and benefit from all your hours you've invested here.

ActiveRain is obviously the premier network to connect with other RE professionals, and granted, many of us do get leads that convert to business, but Localism will be the place to really connect with consumers, neighbors, business owners, targeted neighborhoods and communities.  I'm going across the street now to meet my neighbor, and then apologize for not doing it sooner.  I think a good portion of our time should be spent connecting with our local neighbors and communities off-line, then invite them into the WEB 2.0 world with us. Localism may very well be the tool that helps you do that.  :-)

An Ambulance, Firetruck and Localism? - They all get you out to meet the neighbors!

Brad...Great post! Great Ideas! You are a never ending source of inspiration! Thanks a Mill!!!!

Looking forward to "class" on September 5th!!

I am excited about Localism. It has changed my approach to everything, not just mortgage lending. Just having an outlet of expression opens a person to new ideas, places, and creative impulses.

My concerns have been expressed, as have those of many others.

But whatever the form and the rules, it is exciting to be a part. I am thankful that Active Rain adn Localism were here when I needed a boost and a new direction.

Hi Brad, Localism is like the Neighborhood Watch of AR.  My husband in LE says that long term "neighbors" often meet for the first time at their first NW block meeting!  After that, there is a huge difference on that steet and in that neighborhood for the better. This new sense of community after the Neighborhood Watch meeting continues to grow as people get to know each other better. That is what Localsim will do for that "street".  Thanks.

Thanks Brad. It is always good to have more ideas about the content of Localism and learn more about the best ways to create it.

It seems like everybody wants to know when tragedy strikes, a fire, an accident, a loud blast, etc. It gets people to rubber-neck, sneak outside and see whats going on. Localism can let people do that without leaving the computer monitor!

08/23/2008 07:12 AM by Mott Kornicki • Real Estate In Miami (SIB REALTY, LLC)

I think Localism is long over due.  We needed this way back in the 90's.  Great post!

Brad,

I'm not picking on anyone in particular but if you say Localism is local then how come if I go to the Broward County page and there is an article from an out of state member posted there. I didn't see anything in that article that tells me why it's there in the first place...I don't get the concept of it. I asked Rich the question but he never responded. Does this mean I should be posting my local posts in CA for example?

08/23/2008 07:22 AM by Neal Bloom-Realtor ® Assoc.-CRS-Weston FL (RE/MAX Premier Associates)

Brad - Since the majority of what I write is local in origion I hope that localism will work to make new community contacts for me.  It will be interesting how it plays out.  I always read your posts for insight on how to best utilize the new localism.

08/23/2008 08:12 AM by Pam Dent - REALTOR Charlottesville Virginia Homes and Horse Farms (Real Estate III)

Brad, I like your visual of the ambulance or firetruck and how it attracts us like a magnet. That is the theory behind Localism.

08/23/2008 09:59 AM by Gary Woltal - REALTOR® Dallas Ft. Worth (Keller Williams Realty)

Yesterday I went out and took pictures of some of the local things, with in 2 miles of our neighborhood, that I hope to start writing about.

08/23/2008 10:07 AM by Connie Harvey Realtor Nashville Tennessee Homes (Prudential Woodmont Realty)

Brad - very insightful of you, but true in so many ways. I see lots of opportunity for Localism, indeed in some ways the potential is overwhelming when one considers the ways in which we can use it, and contribute. Finding the time will, for me at least, be the challenge. Guess I need to write shorter posts.

Hi Brad, excellent post title along with a bang on analogy. Re "but Localism will be the place to really connect with consumers, neighbors, business owners, targeted neighborhoods and communities"...

Absolutely! It's fun to socialize with our peers but we also have to be where our most likely prospects are.

08/23/2008 11:25 AM by The Blog Artist - marti garaughty (The Art Of Marketing You)

Brad, Wonderful post and explanation. I am really looking forward to connecting with my neighborhood. I have already put the word out in my monthly newsletter. I have warned every one that I am going to be all over Google, (that is when they look up something about our neighborhood).

08/23/2008 12:25 PM by Camarillo CA Real Estate Agent/ Mana Tulberg (Beach View Real Estate)

You make an excellent point about how we connect to others via internet but most of us do not know our neighbors names.

08/23/2008 12:38 PM by Jay Lundeen (EXIT Heart of Illinois Realtors)

Nice.... I like the analogy Brad. I am getting behind on my content production so I had get the sirens blaring.

08/23/2008 12:46 PM by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate ERA United Realty

Missy - I know it's been said a hundred ways already, but after I hung up the phone with Paul, I just had to write this post.  I realized I was guilty and wasn't practicing what I was preaching.  We've had no firetrucks or ambulances on our street thank God, but why wait till that happens to meet my neighbors?

It's crazy how we can manage so many online relationships, but many of us find it difficult and challenging to manage the offline ones, for whatever reason...  :-)

08/23/2008 01:08 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Brad, love this post!  My block is fascinating for being in a big city.  We know each other, each others kids, dogs and cats.  When my grass got shaggy, a neighbor mowed it when he did his own.  We have impromptu parties and the Webster Street Cocktail Club meetings on most Friday nights.  And many of the houses have sold by word of mouth.  It's pretty cool.  I'll have to bring my little video camera to the street!

08/23/2008 01:19 PM by Patricia Kennedy (Evers & Company)

Brad - it was an absolute pleasure to speak with you yesterday and do a a TON of brainstorming for our upcoming podcast for mortgage originators.  With your permission, when it's done I'll post it on my AR blog as it'll be a good resource for all 100K AR folks, not just originators!

Love the ambulance analogy...

Cheers,
Paul Dunn

Thom and Ray - the inspiration for this one came from talking with Paul.  AR is an endless source of inspiration for us all.  I'm looking forward to the webinar starting on the 5th.  It's going to be awesome. :-)

08/23/2008 01:24 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Richard - I have read some of your posts and comments and I'm glad you feel comfortable enough to share your opinion and thoughts here with others.  I respect and appreciate all comments and posts as sometimes seeing things through the eyes or someone else can help put things into perspective.  I am really fired up at the opportunity I see Localism providing not only for AR members, but for communities and neighborhoods overall.  We have yet to realize the potential and power of Localism, but I know it will be more than any of us ever expected, just like ActiveRain!!   :-)

08/23/2008 01:28 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Brad, Great analogy!  Meeting neighbors is a great way to network and I truly believe Localism will bring me business that I had no clue would head my way. I have SO many photos and videos I have taken for Localism and just can't seem to get the words down for some reason....I'd call it writers block, but I won't flatter myself with that terminology:)  Bloggers block?  I keep thinking I will wake up and "feel it"...sigh    It is so frustrating. I think I am in the middle of a learning curve or something. I know I needed to improve my writing skills greatly and now, I'm stuck!  Hummm, I'm almost hijacking here, heading off the beaten track, so I'll stop:)

08/23/2008 01:29 PM by Huntsville, Alabama Real Estate Agent Elizabeth Ramsey Cooper-Golden (Remax Huntsville/Madison)

Denise - it's nice to hear that you are connecting connected with your neighbors.  AR members will be the NW for Localism, that's a great way to put it.  Another great analogy.  I think the value of introducing others to Localism after you've written a post about them will bring enormous results.  I can't wait to see where we are one year from now. That's very exciting.  I predict that Localism will become an even greater platform than ActiveRain has become!  I know that's a Bold statement, but it's a gut feeling I have.  I'll come back to this post in a year and see if I was right..   :-))

08/23/2008 01:32 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Brad We don't have a problem not meeting the neighbors as I live in a small town and everyone knows everyone.  One of the blogs I recently did was a video of my street, the prettiest street in Altavista Va and sent the link to all the neighbors!

08/23/2008 01:36 PM by Lynchburg, Roanoke & Danville Area Nannette Saunders ASSOCIATE BROKER (Bradner, Farmer, Towler and Associates)

Mott - another nice thing with Localism is that no one gets hurt! The idea here is to get off the computer, go out and meet those in the community so you can bring back interesting and valuable content to your readers and Localism visitors.  Relocation is a great concept for how Localism may be widely used.

08/23/2008 01:37 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Rebecca - it is long overdue, yes!  The 90's would have been way to far ahead of it's time I'm afraid.  :-)

Jeremy - get ta steppin my friend, you know all this already.  BTW - How's that video coming along??

08/23/2008 01:40 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Love the Golden Ticket video what a flashback :-)  I have to say that Localism has given me a whole new appreciation for where I live and has inspired me to get out and do more, meet more people and share it with hopefully anyone who wants to come here....Great post ( as usual) hope you had a good bday...

08/23/2008 01:54 PM by Shannon Gilmore, Realtor® Naples Florida Real Estate (John R. Wood Realtors )

Neal - I'll respond!  Here's the deal in my opinion. I went to Hawaii to visit some friends. They took me to the falls so I posted about it with photos and links etc.  I'm not saying I'd make a habit of posting in other areas, but it does add content that someone may find useful or interesting.  If they do contact me, I would have the decency to refer them to my friend in Hawaii. (But I don't think they would)  There is always a way to help others and sometimes be on the other end of a referral.

Are you really concerned about someones post in your area of localism affecting the results you'll get?  I'd think that when someone sees the post you are referring to and finds out that agent is no where near the location they are looking, they would pass it right over.  I have to give consumers a bit more credit and say they are smarter than that Neal, but that's just my opinion.  If we get too caught up worrying about the other guy, we lose site of what we should be doing.

So, did you have a chance to go next door and offer them some cookies?  lol~  Maybe your neighbor handles all the relocation for their company and you didn't even know it, it's not about what your community does for you, it's about what you do together with your community that matters.  :-)

Localism: See it, post it, share it, grow it!

08/23/2008 01:55 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Pam - only time will tell, but putting your best foot forward like you are, it certainly can't hurt.  I'd say if you were to weigh the odds, they are definitely in your favor!  :-))

08/23/2008 01:56 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Gary - that was well said. You are an excellent writer, I love reading your Blog, it's so motivational and inspiring.  Just wanted you to know that.  I appreciate all your contributions to AR, to my posts, and I hope you'll do the same for your community with Localism.  The world needs your positive attitude and messages. Thanks Gary.  :-)

08/23/2008 01:59 PM by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Builder (ActiveRain)

Hey Brad.  I think everyone should be a volunteer.  I volunteer for the first aid squad and you would be surprised how many people want to thank you and ask you your name, etc when you help them.  So you give them your card.  It's fast, and quick and they remember you.  They remember how you helped them.  And how nice you were and you weren't soliciting them at all.  It is a fun way to advertise.

08/23/2008 02:47 PM by Chris Cathcart (BAYSHORE AGENCY--SHIP BOTTOM)

Connie - you go girl, looking forward to your posts, but probably not as much as those who are considering moving into your area.  They will be seen.   Post, and they will come!  :-)

In my niche, popping a hood will gather a crowd...  And I was a block party with the pictured crew just last month.  I guess you knew that since you were there, too.

Don't forget the ice cream truck - I am still a big kid when it comes to that.  I made the mistake once of buying for all the kids in the neighborhood - the next day they all gathered on my lawn to wait for the truck.

I have mentioned in other comments that I feel like junior roving reporter.  I now carry my camera in my car and stop at will to snap a shot of Fishers, Indiana in action!  I went to my hair salon today and they have a hyperbaric chamber (something to do with autism) so I took a picture, interviewed her, went to her website and will write a post soon.  I also talked to some friends about a local outdoor concert, they are sending me their pictures.  I belong to the chamber and they did had a speaker at the luncheon earlier this week about the schools.  I wrote a post about that.  I can't wait to share all of the great events and places that are out my back door and I love having Localism as the forum to post all of that!

08/23/2008 10:05 PM by Cindy "in Indy" Marchant Indpls and Fishers Real Estate (Keller Williams)

I am finding that Localism gets me out there to actually see what it is that I find interesting in the neighborhoods!!!  It's doing a lot for me, before I even get it on the web!  I find myself planning ahead as to where to eat, what to do each day, etc.  Very fun!!!

08/23/2008 10:17 PM by Emily Lowe - Nashville, TN Realtor (Prudential Woodmont Realty)

Good analogies, Brad & Paul!  I'm going to have to start getting serious about focusing on being more targeted with my Localism posts, but enjoy writing about all of the different things that are just plain interesting to me...perhaps multiple blogs is my best bet.

That's a nice analogy and I think I'll find a way to get my neighbors involved.

08/24/2008 09:20 AM by Hope Goss (Ventura Property Shoppe)

Brad... some excellent points, especially on how many of us talk to our neighbors.  And I can see that this obtains to realtors a lot more than loan officers.  Not trying to complain here... but I see some loan officers blogs featured on Localism. And again, not trying to be rude here... but some of them are just bland.  And I am not pulling out my ego here... but who picks these?  I write a lot of good to great national mortgage blogs, but I haven't had but maybe two of them featured on Localism in 2008 alone. ANd I saw some loan officers get 2 or so just in one month. Which gets me to another point which was asked... who are picking these?  And what is the true criteria?  Is it because I don't have a title that is local to my neighboorhood?  That mine are put out there for everyone to see?  Just trying to get a grasp on that one.  And here is a great example of what I am talking about.  FHA Loans & Energy Efficient Mortgages -- A Huge Savings !!!!!

Overall, loved your analogies and they do make sense.....  thanks

PS... Brad... I like most of the changes to Localism.... but I miss the home page having the featured blogs for that day. Also, I went to my page...  http://localism.com/neighbor/jeffmortgageman     It only shows 5 blogs on my page with no arrow to go to other pages... and some of the blogs in the top 5 are from 2007.  Why is this?  How would the consumer get to my other blogs?  How do we know which blogs have been read and approved for localism?  Sorry for asking you, but I have seen some of these questions asked in the past and I still haven't seen a direct answer to them... and I am just trying to put all of the pieces to the puzzle together... Any help would be appreciated.  thanks

hey... I am back... I just typed in my community and none of my blogs that I wrote about Haddonfield show up...  http://localism.com/nj/haddonfield    I am just going back... a lot has changed...   only real estate blogs pop up. Are mortgage blogs not shown on other pages of localism?  Just under that loan officer's name?  And as I stated, I see that everyone else has more than one page with arrows, but my site doesn't.  thanks

Brad, This is a fantastic post. I am just now beginning to flesh out my ideas for my localism neighborhoods and it's going to be a great way to connect with the folks I have dealt with for years as well as many new people

Oh by the way , I have also subscribed to your blog and yes I have been chasing your ideas since I got here. Thanks again! Russell

Jeff - you need to read Rich Jacobsons post about Localism content. That will answer most your questions here.  There will be no more editorial staff managing posts for approval.  Check it out, then let me know if you still have questions.  Localism is still wet and new.  The paint hasn't even dried and before it does, you'll see even more changes, much of that based on members comments just like yours, so thanks!  :-))

Regarding the 5 posts on the page, I think that's a bug, mine only show's one.  I'll make sure I look into that first think in the morning, off to bed now....
