For the past week or so I have immersed myself in social networking to see what impact, if any, it could have on my business and that of my clients'.  What an interesting exercise this has become.

While I have only just started getting involved with Facebook, Twitter, Utterz, and some of the other networks that are available, I did make a decision a few weeks ago to actively post to my Active Rain blog spot, and have followed through, posting, reading, and commenting when appropriate.  I've made some great contacts on Active Rain, people that are smart, people that make me think or laugh, and these have become associates, and hopefully friends.  I would hope that if they are ever in my area that they would feel free to call and drop by.  I'll either put on the coffee, or open a bottle of wine, and maybe throw something on the grill.

The one thing that has struck me as I am working to increase my sphere of influence and build up my list of acquaintances, friends and contacts through social networking is how many people I have discovered who are linked in to me through other friends and associates. The six degrees of separation seems to be two.

For months I have been participating in an on-line webinar program and we have been communicating back and forth with the company only through emails.   Guess who showed up first Twitter and then on Facebook?  I am connected with Realtors in my area that I may never have a transaction with, but if and when I do, I know that they will be a fine representation of a professional real estate agent.  I've 'bumped' into 'old' home builder friends and even people in the industry that I didn't know personally but knew of or who knew of me.

Maybe through social networking the world has become smaller.  This can be a good thing.  When we can all say that we have something in common, that we are one, maybe then there is the chance of understanding between us, we'll put away the guns and the bombs, and the price of oil, the color of our skin or our religious preferences won't matter.

This exercise started out as an experiment in marketing.  It has become so very much more.

Peace!

Deborah,

So true. I just joined a few sites, and you and I have connected on a few sites as well. It's really incredible since I hadn't even heard of some of these sites until recently.

Amazing, isn't it?  I have really enjoyed reconnecting.

Great seeing you at SEBC.  Thanks for the tremendous effort you put into these events, Steve.  You are a true professional and an asset to our industry.

Deb, you write such good stuff so it comes as no surprise that you are hitting what I assume may be only 3 to 4 degrees of separation.  You inform but do so with a funny twist!  I wish you lived in AZ.

Thanks, Mark, I wish I lived in AZ as well.  AZ is on my short list if I ever leave Jacksonville.  Was in your area last for the World series in 2001.  Love the Fountain Hills area.  Everyone should see the desert flowers blooming in the Spring at least once in their lifetime.

Thanks for reading my posts.  I enjoy reading yours as well.

Facebook I use mostly to stay connected to distant friends and family, but I do post my listings there too. Any exposure is good exposure.

Thanks, Ellie.  That is an excellent suggestion.  May I look you up on Facebook?  I would like to see what you have done.

I have heard Twitter mentioned on several Posts, so I just set up an account.  Let's see what happens.

Deborah - I enjoyed this post very much, it was insightful and introspective.  Maybe one of these days we can organize an A|R get-together for Florida people (of course, everyone would be welcome :-)  Failing that, the wine and grill sounds like a good plan, and it goes both ways - yum!  Nice to see Steve H. here as well....it's all good!

Laura, you can follow me on Twitter @deborahfisher

I am still testing what impact it will have, but I will say that I have met some really fun folks and there are some interesting thoughts and topics going back and forth.

Thanks for reading my blog.  Checked yours out and you had some nice ideas. Like the way you put together your presentation on why list with you.

Good selling!

Thanks, Gail.  It is amazing how we are all connected.  Does anyone out there know Gov. Charlie Crist?  I'd love to chat with him and make a few recommendations.

That's a great idea about having an AR get together.  Maybe we can have a Florida Conference and do some work shops, etc.  Orlando is central.  Let's think it through and see if there is any interest.  People can submit their ideas for workshops and we can have folks volunteer to put together a presentation.

When you head up this way let me know.  I'll get the steaks seasoned and the wine ready.  White or red?

Have an exceptional day, Gail.

LOL - If we're having steaks, let's make it red :-)  I'll bring the wine.
Are you going to the FAR convention in September?  I'm planning on going, perhaps we could meet up then.

Good, not a lover of white.  Into the cabernets, shiraz and merlots and red pinots.

Wasn't thinking about going to FAR but may drop down for dinner. Let's set something up.  I love a road trip and think nothing of motoring a couple of hours away for dinner.  Let me know the dates and I will look at my calendar and get with you.  We could post it and see how many AR people show up. That would be a blog!

Great - I should know by the beginning of next week if I'll attend the entire convention or just a portion.  One of my realtor friends in town is looking into the possibility of getting a time share for a couple of nights.  Saves driving back after a long day.  The convention runs from Sept 24-28, with the trade expo Sept 25 & 26.  We'll keep in touch on this OK, and somewhere early Sept put out feelers for who from A|R might be attending.  Good stuff!

Thanks, Deb.  I'm on twitter, but still figuring out how it works.  Getting alot of girly sex stuff.  :( not too thrilled about that...unless of course they want to buy a house!  :)

08/07/2008 05:16 PM by Laura Kombrink (Kombrink Real Estate Group)

You can block them.  I will send you a "nudge" and I have turned on device updates for you.  I have found a couple of people on Twitter that are using it for customer service to take "calls" from customers.  Nice use as texting beats sitting on the phone.

08/08/2008 10:37 AM by Fisher & Company, P.A., Marketing & Creative Strategists

Thanks Deb,

I have blocked some, but they seem to find another way of getting through.  I don't know that I will be able to put in the time right now to figure it all out.  Some time in the future I will sink my teeth into twitter a little more.  I don't really see it as a dollar productive activity so it's not anywhere near the top of my list.  Thanks for the help, you are awesome!  :)

Like you, Laura, I have been busy and have not had the time to get into all of the applications that Twitter could be used for.  I did like the fact that it is cutting edge for customer service.  If I am waiting for a service call to my home or office, couldn't I twitter the service coordinator instead of tying myself and them up on the phone?  I will make it a point today to sit down and think through some of the applications and let you know what I come up with.  I just thought about a couple of real estate applications that might make our lives easier.
