For quite some time I've operated under the premise of "Don't Reinvent the Wheel". But what if the wheel is a little bit rusty with age? Maybe it needs some WD-40 style of tweaking.

Marketing has come a long way in almost every industry, especially Real Estate.

Many of my cohorts Associates at the office claim, "Blogging? It's a phase."  It's not a phase! It is a fast growing tool that you need for Marketing as well as growth if you aren't going to be left in the dust.

Remember the internet when it was just getting the popularity vote?  There were quite a few people that fought it. "Oh, I don't need to learn new tricks."  Guess what? Those people have come to realize they were fighting the inevitable. It's not too late, for sure, but the advances have come so fast, that it'll be a little harder to learn.

Blogging is a necessary way of Marketing in today's world.  Not only to remain in your own industry and learn from others, but also for Selling Houses. If a Real Estate Agent is not blogging at any level, they will be left in the dust. Homes will sit longer because the previous style of marketing is not working anymore.

If a client was going to sell a house or buy a new house in Pennsylvania just five years ago, a client would expect to find their home listed in the Print Magazine that is given for free at the local stores.  Or eeeeegads... the newspaper classified section!

NAR's most recent survey concludes that approximately 80% of buyers looking to purchase a house use the internet. (In my business, the number is 100%. Some more than others; but all venture and use the internet in some way to look for a home).

There are many agents out there that have not come to grasp with the times..... All Aboard! Jump on! ....  You need to change the way you are marketing a home for sale to your consumer.  You need to change the way you market yourself as a Buyer's agent if you want to reach most of today's consumers.

Begin blogging - or blog more. Increase your internet presence. It's imperative in today's world!

Just do it.

Inspired by reading Seth Godin's "A Meatball Sundae" on my way to Inman Connect in San Francisco.

Kim, you can't beat your phrase, begin blogging and increase your internet presence.

Kim, I see you took the path of blogging and then became famous with the Makeover contest.  Good points.  AJ

Kim - well said - I wish I had a crystal ball to see 5 years from now. I had an opportunity to meet with largest local paper execs recently and they are totally focused on "their online pressence" - that should tell everyone something - the funny thing is they talked about how their whole model was based on "Page 1" articles in the print product and now readers were deciding what to read - totally blew up their world - clients are part of the equation now and that's not going to change.

Kim, well said. Our local paper has laid off hundreds of people, they all blog now and have Twitter feeds, which I read online. Havent' taken the paper in a long time. They had to do something to catch up, but they aren't ranking locally in the search terms as of yet.

Who's hat is that ?

Very few agents in NH get the whole Blogging concept. Most think of it as playing on the net, a waste of time. I feel bad for them but you can lead a horse to water but not make it drink...that's how I feel about Blogging. I teach it here in NH but most don't get it.

07/28/2008 06:58 AM by Monika McGillicuddy~REALTOR®~ N.H. Real Estate Broker & Trainer (Prudential Verani Realty/Hampstead)

KIM - Let them all think that it is a phase.  It clearly is not.  People tend to mock what they don't understand.  Truthfully, some people blog, but do it in such a cavalier way that it makes them look bad, so they might be better off without it.  Personally, I find blogging to be the best marketing tool that I've come across since joining the profession.

07/28/2008 07:05 AM by Adam Waldman - Long Island REALTOR® (RE/MAX Best)

Its amazing how blogging has changed the way I do business. People are finding me left and right, why? Because of my blog. Couldn't see myself not doing it!!

07/28/2008 07:22 AM by Jeannette Neerpat, e-Pro Coral Springs/Parkland Real Estate (London Realty Corp)

Gary, Glad you got that.

AJ, ha! Famous. Yeah. Known for the girl  breaking a tear talking about Missy!

Cyndee, Reminds me of something else I heard this week. Instead of talking "at" people, we have to "connect" people to each other.

Missy, I haven't picked up a paper in a while either. Trying to steer away from depressing news too.  BOB STEWART's HAT! You'll see it on three of us ;)

Dan, It is, but so many people (including our locals) don't get it!  PS. Thanks

Monika, I'll keep on playing thank you :)

Adam, Me too! But as Linda Davis said (post coming) this week, "A blog won't help a crappy business." You do have to have a good foundation. (Thanks, Makeover2Takeover!)

Jeannette, My internet presence in general has increased leads too!

You don't know how many agents I talk to that generate almost all of their biz through blogging and other online social media tools, and they're high producing agents too.  There may not be a more effective ROI out there for getting business, plus it's fun :)

07/28/2008 04:11 PM by Matt Heaton (ActiveRain Corp.)

Woo hoo !  I love it .... am now pumped up.  Am glad we started blogging - we are only a few weeks into A/R and we love it !  I know it will take some time to get things moving but that is okay as it is also fun - is a nice outlet for me.  Appreciate your post.

Kim- How can anyone deny that blogging has great ROI, if done consistently as part of your marketing?! The results are all over AR, and of course on individual blog superstars:) I have to say though, sometimes its like twisting arms to get some clients on board.

Kim...

You probably know I'm old school but have always been opened minded when it comes to my Company and it's future.

I didn't even need to start Blogging to clearly see the benefits. There was a time when we would just give away our Buyer leads...Now we collect all those teeny tiny referral checks. Those little suckers add up by years end :)

By the way...Nice hat :)

TLW...ROAR!

Kim, I couldn't agree more. Since recently relocating to Huntsville, I had no SOI, and started from square one. MOST of my business has been because of my blog.  Great article!  Hey, did I ever say congratulations on 2nd place? You're awesome!

Kim...Oh so true!  As much as some agents might like to make it happening, social media including blogging is not going away.  In a couple of years, this will all seem so elementary.  It's better to be learning ahead of the curve on this one.

toss up about the hat... you or Bob?  Blog is the only marketing we're doing right now. And against the onslaught of negative economic media madness, well... am thinking much like it's a david and goliath kinda thing.  but the leads are good, and if only most of the buyers would buy.

Brilliant post!  How ironic that I send tons of invites to ActiveRain to colleagues/"outside my market" agents and they don't take up the invite!  I suppose that we're smarter than the average bear?

Blogging is amazing good business and fun as well.  Newspaper advertising is obscenely expensive and you have that one TINY window for exposure. Hit or miss!  There goes your $200-400!!!  POOF!  Heck, I work to hard to burn money like that.

Very cute hat!  Have I mentioned you're brilliant?  Yes?  Well, there, I've said it again...

Kim, you are so right about blogging. It almost seems like you are preaching to the choir here on Active Rain, but hopefully someone else will find it and become inspired. I think our clientle both present and future know the power of web marketing. It is up to us to grasp it, hold on tight, and enjoy the ride!

Thanks Kim -- I have just started over the last couple of weeks and have built a nice destination site for my friends and associates to go to for quick technical tips they can use in their business to increase their effectiveness.  Not using for business but another form of communication that used to be done via email and now can more easily be done through blogging to get the word out.

It is here to stay especially with all the social networking going on with Facebook, Instant Messaging and text messaging with the younger generation.  More so than traditional email.

Make it a profitable day!  Scott Hoen

Consistency is the key to so many things in life. Blogging is no exception!

Matt
If it wasn't fun, I wouldn't have kept it up this long. It is time consuming - but I agree, the ROI is worth it! That's what really matters.

Bob & Carolin
I like his stuff. You can use it - you just have to link it.

Christopher & Stephanie
I'm so glad!!! Yay!!!!!  I'm glad you jumped on board - I'll go read your posts/blog.
::Gentle Teacher Voice:: It's not nice to link to sites in a comment. Please only take that as helping guide you along!!!!

People do deny it! But as Linda Davis said at Inman.. if your business is crap, a blog won't help. (paraphrased)

Courtney
Yay! Glad you are - wait till you start getting clients - then it really rocks!

Blogging will be here for quite a while, even as video gets added to it.  ActiveRain is a PERFECT place to learn - I mean it!!! I'm going to check when I'm done replying to see if you've written a post yet - if you haven't , really.... Just do it!

Jeff
I'm still not so sure I'm a "writer". I used to struggle so much with it. I have two friends that are journalists and they also struggle!! It flows much easier now as I took the first year not to get to fancy - just to WRITE!  Just do it, Jeff! See what happens... it'll be worth it :)

As much as we've shown over and over that blogging gets results, less than 5% of all real estate agents are here in the Rain ... hmmmmm. Wonder if the next NAR Survey of Buyers and Sellers will have questions specifically about blogging?

07/28/2008 10:39 PM by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

Good hat! I love it!

I have invited lots of agents, but many are so overwhelmed by the market, they don't want to try anything new. It's too bad - since they would love the camaraderie, the tips, and the uplifting ways of the AR community. On the other hand, it gives me a chance to zoom ahead of the pack by the time they realize it's good. Oops, my competitive side is showing again...that happens way too often!

07/28/2008 11:18 PM by Dawn Maloney, ABR (Geneva Chervenic Realty)

I was told yesterday "you are the only agent I know in this area who is blogging."  Shhh.. keep quiet, I sure know a lot of people are reading!

07/28/2008 11:53 PM by Ginger Wilcox, Marin County Realtor (Pacific Union, Marin Real Estate)

Kim,

Thanks for your encouragement.  I promise I will post something soon.  I don't know if I can measure up with the knowledge and writing skills I see on this site.  I agree with Dawn above that this is a great way to learn and network with other agents.  Many times the agents in the office are not really willing to give to much away.  I have found on some sites that Realtors in other states are more willing to help you as they don't see you as their competition but rather an ally for referrals.

I think there are going to be a lot of agents down the road, who had a fairly good business going and think "this blogging is just a fad", who slowly start to realize their business is dropping off.  The numbers just aren't what they used to be.  By then those of us that see the value will be light years ahead of the rest of the pack.
