Wow, can you dig it? Lightweight, easy to move, neutral colors, cardboard furniture - just think of the possibilities?? NOT !!

I too, received HGTV's Front Door Newsletter by email today. It provided this list - Top 10 Unique Home Fake Cardboard FurnitureSelling Tactics and right there at number 2 was - Take Home Staging To The Extreme. That was great to see and they offered some great advice about decluttering, depersonalizing, rearranging furniture, feng shui techniques but then they mentioned FAKE CARDBOARD FURNITURE with a link to the Fake Furniture website  Photo from website.

Now, I am sure there are some uses for Fake Furniture but it really should not have any place in Professional Home Staging - except maybe the bed, just remember to put the sign - For Decorative Purposes Only.

The next item on the list was FAUX FAMILIES, now that's a different angle. They talked about buyers wanting to see a warm and inviting place where they can see themselves living. They stated that Centex Homes in TX experimented with actually placing actors in the home to portray a family that interacted with potential buyers viewing the home.

I must say that instead of Faux Furniture or Faux Families, just hire a Professional Home Stager and you will not be making a Faux Pas !!

56 Comments on Hey Stagers - How About Some Cardboard Furniture??

Unbelievable. I can't believe we are showing homes with cardboard furniture, it seems this would only work in a cardboard house. Thanks for the info.

Hi Cheryl,

Wow, interesting idea!  I think you have the right idea and hopefully others will see that as well.  Have a great weekend.  Michael A. Caruso

07/18/2008 12:56 PM by Michael Caruso Real Estate Group

If I were a potential buyer and approached by an actor in one of those Centex Homes, I'd be really creeped. Thanks for the laugh!

07/18/2008 01:12 PM by Regina Lundeen (RE/Max Realty Group)

Fred, too funny - cardboard house.. Thanks for stopping by Michael, Thanks, Home Staging is the right idea.. Regina, You are so right - too strange !! God bless !!

07/18/2008 01:23 PM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

I would not want an actor pretending to be some happy home owner trying to start up a conversation with me...I think it would make people get out of the house all the sooner and not take their time to actually check out the features of the home.

07/18/2008 02:58 PM by Sharon Tara New Hampshire Home Stager (Sharon Tara Transformations)

Cheryl, I heard about the faux families living in homes that are for sale. I think they are pushing the button a little to much. The card board furniture, well I'm still laughing on that one. Thanks for sharing.

07/18/2008 03:27 PM by Barbara Cluck-Miksits - New Jersey Home Staging (BCM Home Staging LLC)

How CHEESY!! :-O I checked out the fake furniture website....did you notice the price! You could do some nice vignettes with REAL furniture for the same cost!

07/18/2008 04:00 PM by Teresa Mills Schremm, ASHSR Home Staging Cuyahoga/Lorain County, OH (Looking Fine by Redesign, LLC)

Julia, LOL, I might wear a cardboard dress before a paper one.. Sharon, You are right - that is too creepy.. Barbara, Thanks - I guess different strokes..... Michelle, Come on now - you know you would love it, with your imagination - you could create a whole house with the stuff.. LOL Teresa, Yes I did, I am a bargain shopper so I probably could get the real stuff.. God bless you all ..

07/18/2008 04:32 PM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

You are right Cheryl, now that I have time to digest the idea I have come up with a solution.

I would paint it to look like the patterns on Ikea furniture. With all that blank white space I can picture it now.......

07/18/2008 05:56 PM by Michelle Finnamore CSP & Live Green, Live Smart Certified Trainer (Advantage Staging - Preparing your property for sale.)

For a moment I freaked out when I saw the line coming from you... I was thankful to see the NOT!!  I do actually know of other stagers (right here on AR) who use it or have mentioned what a great idea they are.  I'm with you on this one!!

07/18/2008 06:13 PM by Melissa Marro www.StagingAndRedesign.com www.RedesigningCharleston.com (First Impressions)

This was blogged about quite a bit last year, and some A/R stagers posted photos of how they used the cardboard furniture. It wouldn't work in my market, but if it works for someone else I won't knock it. I think someone blogged about putting Surefit covers on the pieces so that they didn't "look" like cardboard. They even offer a cardboard bed!

07/18/2008 06:22 PM by Maureen Bray ~ Room Solutions Staging, Portland OR (Room Solutions ~ Staging that Sells Homes!)

Michelle, See I KNEW you would come up with something cute for a... play-house !!! Melissa, Thanks so much for stopping by - sorry didn't mean to scare you.. Maureen, Since I was not around last year, I had never seen it but I was surprised to see HGTV mention it.. I guess it's just not for my market.. God bless,

Would you 'rope' off the room so the kiddos don't jump on the boxes?  We lost a jack-o-lantern leaf bag that way once- daughter came home from school and thought we put out a bean bag- to tempting.  Next time we let her rake and fill it up.  be good  cheryl

Cheryl W, I wish I could have seen your daughter's face.. I guess we could make a game out of it - who can crush the most cardboard furniture.. God bless,

07/18/2008 08:18 PM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

Unbelievable.

I just went on the website and looked at the beds, wonder how long it takes to put it together?

Thanks for the giggles.

Joyce

07/18/2008 08:22 PM by Joyce Zdenek (Hallmark Sotheby's International Realty & Joyce's Interiors )

Joyce, Thanks - it is giggly, it probably would take me forever to put together a box bed ;-( God bless,

07/18/2008 08:28 PM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

Cheryl-I love going to Hickory and High Point and buying the "real" furniture.  How great it must be to live there!!

I've seen pictures of "staged" beds on this site by "stagers" that sure look like a sheet thrown over cardboard boxes!

To each his own, but cardboard furniture is not for me.

Hi Cheryl, I'm not a cardboard fan either!  Enjoyed your post.  Love what FrontDoor is doing.

07/19/2008 01:53 AM by Susie Blackmon-Maggie Valley Waynesville NC Realtor/RE Blogger/Photographer (COLDWELL BANKER Kasey & Associates)

While showing properties last week we hit three homes with fake beds.  The first clue was the sign that said please stay off the bed.  After the first one my clients made a games of looking for fake staging items.

07/19/2008 04:41 AM by Randy L. Prothero - Hawaii REALTORĀ® (Century 21 Liberty Homes)

Cardboard furniture and paper dolls, Barbie's dream house of the late 50's and 60's and the cut out paper dolls from Betsy McCall.  I am really dating myself now.

07/19/2008 09:23 AM by Christine O'Shea, Central NJ Real Estate Agent (NATIONS)

Joan, I do love Hickory and the furniture, although wouldn't you know I still have a hard time finding what I need because I want bargains. .. Hey, I have friends that work for a company that makes furniture for Crate & Barrell and I can't even get anything from there - ugh. Susie, Hey, thanks for stopping by, yes Front Door has been great.. Courtney, You are so right.. Randy, Yes, it is pretty common to see the beds but not other furniture. Christine, My favorite things were Barbies and paper dolls... I designed all kinds of outfits - this would be suitable furnishings for them.. God bless,

07/19/2008 10:25 AM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

Perhaps in a foreclosure property that needs just a little bit of something to make it stand out????  I say that with the most confused look on my face as I guess I could see someone making the fake bed look ok with bedding but the rest of it well it is just....FAKE!

07/19/2008 11:24 AM by Cindy Jones-Northern Virginia Real Estate & Military Relocation Services (RE/MAX Allegiance #1 RE/MAX Company in the World)

Actually we have seen homes with cardboard furniture and as strange as it sounds it was not so bad. It was better than nothing in the home it seemed.

07/19/2008 11:43 AM by Bob & Carolin Benjamin - E Phoenix Arizona Real Estate (The Benjamin Team - Keller Williams Integrity First Realty )

Even the "proptonics" make me a little crazy... but you could have one person carry all of the furniture for a condo in one car and one trip up the stairs...

07/19/2008 12:01 PM by Lane Bailey - REALTOR & Car Guy (Diamond Dwellings Realty)

  • Hi Cindy, I guess it has a place ?
  • Bob & Carolin - I would have to see it in person
  • Lane, Thanks Car Guy for stopping by- lightweight -it's best asset
  • God bless you all ..

07/19/2008 12:44 PM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

Hi Cheryl,  Congratulations on your "Featured Post!"  Let's get real!  My wife does some fake props in her staging, but she always has a linen or cover over them so they appear real!  You can't "fake it 'till ya make it" in Staging!

07/19/2008 12:51 PM by Dan Woodworth * Encouraging Communicator (The Connection)

I wish you were closer, I have models that need staging.  Any sugestions?

07/19/2008 12:55 PM by Greg Adelman (Midwest Home Center)

In one of my listings, we have a fake bed in one of the bedrooms. Unfortunately, young children do not understand what "For Decorative Purposes Only" means!

07/19/2008 01:10 PM by Rich Mielke, CRS, ABR, E-Pro, REALTOR (Realty Executives of Frederick MD)

Wish that was the answer - It sure would make storage & delivery/pickup easier. Seems to me buyers would be talking about the cardboard furniture instead of the home????

07/19/2008 02:22 PM by Michele Hess, Simply Staged Inc. (Simply Staged Inc.)

Thanks for the laugh Cheryl, I think as well as a sign that says "For display purposes only", they need a "No smoking" sign!!!

Cheers, Emily, Celebrate Staging

I kinda like the cardboard furniture, looks modern and clean. Just wait until someone decided to have a seat.

07/19/2008 04:18 PM by International Financing Solutions

I'm with most of you... I don't think that would work to well. But you would think they could make better "fake" furniture than that! Maybe if it takes off, I'll start a new business for high end fake furniture. :-)

Great title to hook everyone's attention!  Cardboard furniture reminds me of the play houses before all of the plastic ones were developed.  By extension you could put cardboard window treatments up and cardboard plants.  Too bizarre.  Great post!

07/19/2008 06:19 PM by Pam Faulkner-Faulkner House Redesign Stager-N. VA-Fairfax & Loudoun Co. (Faulkner House Interior Redesign)

Uh oh!  I just remembered there is an old photo of me on my hands and knees crawling into my children's cardboard play house. And you just know that my husband caught my caboose broadside! Too funny! Thanks for bringing back all those happy memories.

We painted that cardboard house with our two little girls when they were 2 & 6. They are now 29 and 25. My that was a long time ago.

07/19/2008 07:00 PM by Michelle Finnamore CSP & Live Green, Live Smart Certified Trainer (Advantage Staging - Preparing your property for sale.)

Well doesn't that look tacky? I've seen cardboard televisions and computers but certainly, not furniture.

07/19/2008 07:33 PM by Diane Bell, Hilton Head Real Estate, Bluffton (Charter 1 Real Estate, Hilton Head, Bluffton, SC)

The funny thing about the faux families is that agents always advise home sellers NOT to be present during the showing.  Now we have companies hiring actors to play faux families that could live there.

Doesn't cardboard furniture kind of defeat the purpose?

07/19/2008 09:35 PM by Above All Financial Services

HI there! Great title-whew, I was so happy to see NOT! Can't imagine using these pieces in a home. Great post Cheryl!!

07/19/2008 10:06 PM by Cathy Lee ASP (CL Design Services Home Staging)

Yikes!  I hope it is recyclable...................

07/19/2008 11:51 PM by Lisa Roy (SPACELiFT HOME STAGING, Greater Vancouver)

I'd rather use cheap plastic patio furniture from Wal Mart with throw covers over them!  Cardboard furniture? You've got to be kidding me.

Chances are HGTV received a nice ad from the cardboard furniture company and was compelled to feature the product this way.

Actually I think everything on HGTV is just part of a sinister plot by LOWES and Home Depot to get people thinking they can do stuff - so they go buy stuff to do it with, and then they totally screw up their house and have to buy MORE stuff to fix it with, and then finally hire a contractor who will have to go buy  MORE stuff to fix the homeowne'rs fix!  LOL

Ick, It would be my luck to sit down on one by accident and fall through, although I guess that's noworse than the kitchen chair that fell apart under one of my clients last week :

07/20/2008 03:05 AM by Michelle DeRepentigny, *Associate Broker/Broker * Athens, GA (ERA Classic City Realty)

I went to the website and thought that maybe the bed could be pulled off...but not for that price! I am amazed at how high the prices are!  You can go to a garage sale or craigslist and find furniture that is actually real, for cheaper!

07/20/2008 02:58 PM by Amy Dawson, Vancouver, WA Realtor (Century 21 Expert Realty)

Sean, Yeah - it is kind of modern and clean - just not sturdy ;_0 Ok Grant - I am looking for your high end fake furniture Pam - See we can decorate even cardboard homes.. Michelle, OK - you can share the photos - how funny and YOU CANNOT have kids that old!!! Diane, Thanks for your comments Above All - Yep, I was thinking the same thing Cathy Lee, I scared Melissa also. Lisa - yes - it needs to be recycled real soon Karen Thanks for coming by - you are so right about starting projects then having to buy 10 other things.. Michelle - that would be my luck to have someone crash the furniture Amy - thanks for coming by.. God bless everyone !!

07/20/2008 03:30 PM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

Oh my this one is a kick. My husband is the number one packaging designer in the country. He has made things out of cardboard that would blow your mind - a real boat with a bar and everything that he and his friend took out in the San Francisco Bay and watched the world series in McCovy Bay...so he knows his stuff. This stuff is just awful on here. When I first started my business I went down a route like this with him but combined with material etc. We decided that it would be a quick fix and it would better to invest in quality furnishings which we did.  This would be a complete rip off of our clients if we ever put these items in a property.

Kym, Thanks for coming by.. Wow- your hubby's stuff sounds fantastic but you are right - quality is what we should invest in for long term.. God bless,

07/21/2008 11:43 AM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

Aloha Cheryl G. You are so funny (faux pas) .....so this company might come up with fake cardboard people or hire actors to pretend to be the "family" ?? wow......ive never even heard of fake cardboard furniture!!! very interesting....but they bettter hire you to do the staging !!!! that fake stuff doesnt seem all that great to me and ive seen the photos of the homes you have staged and you are so imaginative and have the greatest ideas with 'real stuff' . I especially liked the drum you made into a table...in the boy room.....i always think about that....what a creative idea...

07/21/2008 12:11 PM by Lisa Edwards (Aloha Coast Realty, LLC)

07/22/2008 09:12 AM by Cheryl Gilliam Home Staging-Hickory NC (Just Heavenly Decor & Design)

I think Michele Hess hit the nail on the head. Buyers coming into a home filled with white cardboard furniture would be so distracted by the novelty factor that they wouldn't focus on the house itself. That defeats the purpose of staging, doesn't it?

07/22/2008 09:23 AM by David Moon - First Impressions (First Impressions Home Staging & Interior ReDesign)
