Usually all sellers think the paint or wallpaper on their walls is the perfect color or look. But most buyers will not. Not everyone likes the colors barn red or mauve or even coconut husk on interior walls. But there are some basic colors everyone can agree on; white and off white.
So when it's time to sell your home, you should really consider changing the colors of your walls before you put it on the market. Believe it or not, paint sells. Many buyers will be too overwhelmed by the cost and labor of painting so they will keep looking at other homes if they are turned off by your paint.
Do a run through to see which rooms need a painting. Make sure you caulk or putty nail holes before you start painting. Choose your paint color and texture. Remember that white and off white are the best to go with. A good texture is eggshell. If you need to save a little money, go with flat. I prefer eggshell because it looks flat but it is washable and flat paint is not. Semi-gloss is good for bathrooms and glossy is good for trim.
If you have a room with wallpaper, you may want to consider painting over it instead of removing it. Removing it can be expensive and time-consuming and you have a great chance of damaging the walls underneath if you don't know what you're doing. If you choose to paint over it, you will need to prime it with an oil-based primer first to seal the paper. Then you can paint it like your other walls with any water-based paint.
Pay special attention to doors and make repairs as needed. For ceiling stains you can try a mixture of half bleach, half water and sponge it on the stain. You may not have to paint the entire ceiling after all. If the stain won't come off, then you will need to paint the entire ceiling. No matter how hard you try, you can't match ceiling paint.
A fresh coat of the right paint will help potential buyers to see themselves in your home. And don't forget the outside paint, too.

I love paint! It's amazing to me that you can take something that you'd like to throw away, put a fresh coat of paint on it and treasure it all over again.
