My hubby and I were debating this last night and I'm on the fence about the topic.

In my post yesterday I posed the question as to whether I should go with a "non-corporate" broker or with a big-named company. From the incredible response that I've received I definitely think I will do a lot of shopping and interviews and won't settle with the first offer. So thank you to all of those that provided fantastic feedback - one Realtor from Arizona is even emailing me a list of good questions to ask when on interview!! Woo-hoo!

One of the strongest points made was regardless of who or where you work for, it's important to have support and training. My background is one of a "self-starter;" I'm motivated and when I know there's something to do or learn I take it upon myself to find the best way to do it. I don't need a lot of hand-holding, you could say. With my previous employer I didn't have a boss lurking over me and I had to learn a lot of things on my own, so going to a company that doesn't provide much support isn't really a scary thing to me. So I must ask:

Does Support Really Matter?

What is support, really? In the realtor world what would you consider support and of this so-called support, what are the most important elements? From your answers I will make sure that whomever I work for or work with will provide me those important aspects.

Obviously training and having someone available to ask basic questions is a key factor. My thought is that I could have a core group of realtors that are already my friends that I could rely upon to answer localised questions. And then there are YOU fantastic people! - AR is like a huge "back office" that can provide help with marketing and basic questions.

In summation, what is the most important types of support that I should not overlook when choosing who to work for?

Outside of that look for a company that is on the forefront of internet technology.  A company that has a strong internet presence.  If 80 percent of people are searching online then a lot of the leads are going to come in that way as well.

David - Thank you for this comment. My personal opinion about technology (and maybe I'm wrong), is that it's up to the agent to be tech savvy - not the office. I think I may post a blog on this too. Good point - you've made for some new blog content!

Support is a very important part of it, but also look for Honesty and Integrity in the reputation.  Also, look for a good training program.  You never stop learning and growing in your business.

Jane,  While training is extremely important the attitude and camaraderie of your fellow Realtors will be just as important.  Team work believe it or not is important even though you are an independent contractor basically working on your own.   When my son in law wanted to break into the business, rather than starting with my company,  I suggested he go to a larger firm where there was a distinct and disciplined training program.   After a year there he had made industry contacts, friendships and made a change.  Make your best  educated, gut-instinct decision now and don't be afraid to revisit your choice after a year.

Bob - Great advice on Honesty and Integrity. Too bad there wasn't a rating system online that told you the "truth" behind each office. Funny thing is that there is an office in my town called "Integrity Realty" - should I start there? joking!

Keith - I'm a big proponent of gut-instinct decisions; of course that mixed with educated guesses!
