My Father's Day

By

I almost didn't write this particular post at all, since I have seen so many great ones today on the topic of fatherhood, but I did have a few thoughts I wanted to share about my day.  Nothing earth-shattering here, but you might find it interesting.

Today was not all that different than any other Sunday for me.  We went to church, where Brandon and Aleah helped me with greeting duties.  Brandon is probably the best greeter in the church, and I am not at all biased. :)

After church, we went to eat Greek food, which turned out to be a bit of a tragedy, if I'm being honest.  The service was truly bad (future post material), and Abby (our two-year old) was highly upset and grumpy and tired throughout the meal.

One of the best gifts that I received today was a post-lunch nap for a couple of hours.  When I was a kid, I never napped after I was about a year old.  It seemed tantamount to torture in my mind.  I tried to go to a day camp once wherein they attempted to get us to lie down for an hour.  They only could have accomplished this by using duct tape on me.  I had zero interest in being still.  It strikes me as the ultimate irony that naps are one of my favorite pleasures now.  I don't know if this is true for all dads, but it is a treat for me.

After getting up, I helped clean up the house because we have a church small group that meets here every Sunday evening.  We had a nice visit (and some great food) with our friends.

Gifts from my children today:

  • Aleah - A lovely fishbowl painting that she created with colorful fish - she made a point to retrieve it from my wife's car this morning.  She is very thoughtful and sweet.
  • Abby - She seemed reluctant to hug me or to say "Happy Father's Day" for the first half of the day.  After her nap (and mine), she cuddled with me for awhile in the bed and said, "Happy Daddy Day".  No better gift than that.
  • Brandon - A Dum-Dum wrapper from a lollipop.  Yes, really.  He is an eternal joker, and he asked me several times with a gleam in his eye, "Did you like my present?".  As if I could say "No"!  Funny child.

Thanks for reading about my day!  I hope all of you dads had a terrific day.

Maybe you even got a nap, too.

Happy Father's Day Jason.  Father's Day is a bit of a conflicted holiday for me, which, if you've read my father's day post, you'll understand why.  My kids spent the day with their dad, and we all had a relaxing day just doing nothing, which is unusual.  Sometimes it's nice to just have some down time.  I'm glad you got a nap in... it feels great, doesn't it?

I like Eric's idea!  Ryan just turned 16 and it would have been great to have re-gifted some of his practical jokes!  :)

Jason, it sounds like you had a nice Father's day.  I guess other than a grumpy 4 year old.  I do remeber those days but I had a grumpy picky eater.  Amazingly as a young adult she will eat anything and be glad to get it.  Its amazing how being on your own cures that.  Happy Fathers Day.

Hi Jason...Whenever anyone mentions the word nap all I think of is when my two youngest were in elementary school.  We lived very, very close to the school.  Around 2:30-2:40 every afternoon I would get so sleepy.  Of course, Marc and Tamra were home about 3:05 which meant I never even consider lying down.  Cat naps didn't do it.

I think your Father's Day rates an A+.  Thanks for telling us about it.

Cheers,

Kathleen

Enjoy the days like that. Kids grow so fast, you would not really notice that. This could be your best time as a family.

JASON - I can't speak for all dads, but I can tell you that I have a tremendous appreciation for naps now.  Of course, maybe we like them so much because they seem unattainable in chaotic households with small children.  We always want what we can't have.  Children, on the other hand, are encouraged to nap so that we can get some rest.  It is too available to them, and thus, not at all desireable.  They'll be sorry when they're older, as we all are.  Glad that you had a good day.

Jason- It sounds like you had a wonderful Father's Day ! We made my husband's day special as well. The kids wouldn't allow him to nap so you were definatly ahead of him. In their eyes they had to entertain "Daddy" all day...it was great..especially for me. Since the kids felt the need to entertain "daddy" I was able to get more done in a day than an entire week ! Ahhh, if everyday was that good !

Jason,

Glad you had a great fathers day. Sounds like the day I had yesterday. I took the family to church then we came home and my wife  had us a cooked meal. I did get that 2 hour nap.  Just having quality time with my wife and kids and the opportunity to praise the father made for a "great day" indeed!

Jason, I'm sure you enjoyed your day.  Your kids sound soooooo precious.  Those memories are 10,000 times better than any ole necktie or trinket.  I'm sure that nap was pretty sweet too!  LOL

I too had an enjoyable fathers day and I have to say any day fishing makes for a good day, but Sunday was different, they didn't start complaining after 15 minutes that they were tired of fishing...It took more like an hour this time, but 45 minutes extra is fine with me!
