It has  happened several times, you've read it in the newspaper - you've seen it on the news - you've heard stories at the watercooler.  Yes, it happens all the time.   Fire breaks out in a home - thanks to an unattended candle.   It happened to a house an agent in our office had listed.   Another agent showed up for her scheduled appointment ---when she opened the front door and saw smoke and flames she immediately called 9-1-1.   The house was not a total loss, thank goodness.   And the cause of the fire - an unattended candle.    The homeowner wanted the house to 'smell nice' for the showing.   Yes, we all want that - but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE  do not leave candles lit.

Last week I was showing property - and almost every house had a candle lit - with nobody home.  I blew them out and told my clients all about the fire incident.  Later that evening I phoned the listing agents, cause that's how I am, lol -      I reminded them about the fire,  and urged them to stress to their sellers not to light candles.  There are so many other things we can do to make the house smell nice :)

Ok, so now that I have that off my chest, time to move on!

Thanks for listening.

Great reminder Kara, I think a vase of fresh flowers would look better and be a whole lot safer...unless you're showing to people with allergies of course ;-)

You are so right! And, thanks for taking the time to remind others. I have had the same experience. I went to show a home --- no one home --- and at least 6 lit candles with no one home!!! I called the listing agent right away. It amazes me that people pass those internet scares about plug in air fresheners but the leave a lit candle undattended????

Thanks for the comments, ladies :)         Sometimes we will have some fresh flowers delivered to a home prior to a showing, for that exact reason.  Smells nice, looks pretty, and won't burn the house down!

Daughter's house caught fire due to a candle that they used during winter power outage.  They are still working on repairs.
