I Had an Open House with My Son Today

By

I held my first open house today in over two years.  Having actually sold five homes at open houses during my career, I'm not sure why I don't do them more often.  Maybe the excruciating boredom?

The home I held open today is a lovely and affordable listing right around the corner from my own home.  I decided to mix things up a little bit and have some company, so I took my nine-year-old son Brandon along for his first open house experience.  Gotta show the kid the ropes early, right?

I will admit that I was surprised at the level of enthusiasm that he expressed when I asked him if he wanted to go:

"Yeah, yeah, yeah....We can look around the house, and take the camera, and take some pictures, and I can help, and, and, and..we can bring the camera, right?"

Great!  I was looking forward to it and so was he.  He has a budding interest in photography (and a good eye, I might add), and he truly enjoys looking at different homes.  Wonder where he gets that from?

We had to run to Home Depot to get a few directional "OPEN HOUSE" signs before starting.  I was wearing my company polo shirt, and I was happily taken aback by how many people said stuff like, "Open house today, huh?  Sounds like fun." or "You must be a Realtor."  My chest actually swelled with pride a little bit - yes, I am a Realtor, and happy to be one.

When we were checking out at the front, the cashier asked me, "Are you a Realtor?" '

"Yes, I am.  I have my own company," I replied.

"Really?  I just finished taking my first real estate class at ACC."

"Cool!  I would love to talk to you sometime.  I am actually hiring right now."

We talked for a minute or two, then I gave her my card and we shook hands.  I hope to hear from her soon - nice girl.

SO, the open house probably would have gone better, but after the first hour, the next door neighbor's graduation party began, and there were NINE cars parked right in front of my listing, so my sign was much harder to see.  I did get one interested couple that I will likely be assisting, but not right away.  They are moving from Las Vegas in the fall.

We capped off the evening with a night of swimming at the nearby community pool.  We had a great time, and my son made a funny joke (at least for a nine-year-old kid).  He told me about some characters that he had created named Frank and his mustard-filled wife Frankie.  Their last name is Furter, by the way.  Their favorite saying is, "Human Diggedy Being".  Get it?  Well, I thought it was a pretty good one.

Thanks for reading!

Well hot diggedy dog, what a creative 9 yr old. You had your take your child to work day a little later than normal, but, then, your better than average. What a great way to spend some time together.

That is cool, I've taken my kids to a few open houses and I actually do better with them there, who knows why? Also, hopefully you encouraging that person that just took their test will be the difference between them succeeding or failing. It really can be that simple! I've seen many a new people fail because of all the negative things that are throwing at them the first year.

I can't wait until my son gets old enough for this type of stuff.  I just hope he has an interest.  If not, we will find a ton of other stuff to get into.  Awesome post Jason!

i always let my kids help out somehow.  They are to little to attend but they need jobs so they can learn the importance of work.

I feel sorry for the people moving to Vegas.  If you do a relo for them be careful who you refer to.  Most agents in Vegas should not be practicing real estate.  Coming from Texas, I was shocked to experience the violations and unprofessionalism during my very first deal.  It is good to be back home.

Christina and Kevin - They are actually moving FROM Las Vegas, and they are presently renting, so there's no referral to be had there.

Here's a thought, Jason.  I know Brandon has been running and biking.  Provided that swimming is not a weak link, I think it's time to use his considerable athletic prowess to hustle up some business.  At the next open house, challenge the attendees to a triathalon versus your kid.  They will not expect to be thoroughly dominated by a nine year old and will likely agree.  If Brandon wins, they must employ you as their agent.  If they happen to get lucky and win, they receive a $75 gift card to Sizzler after using you as their agent.  Sounds like a win-win to me.

Jason- when my son was younger, before I was in Real esate, he used to point out all the open house signs to me and tell me which  homes he wanted to see.  Now at 16, it is a fate worse than death to spend time with me unless he wants something.

I get a fair amount of business at open house, so I do them 2-4 times a month!!  I love doing themi n my own neighborhood, my friends stop by, or call to tell me they saw my sign, and congrats on a new listing, even if it isn't my listing I was sitting open!  Works for me!

Jason my friend, that is so cool.  I used to take my nephew and nieces with me to closings, open house, even an appointment to get something signed, and they were always so good.  Now Sandie has turned out to be a top notch Realtor, I very proud of her. sandie acordLiz

Your trip to Home Depot was more productive than your open house! Somehow, I'm not surprised...

What a bummer to have the grad party next door. Too bad they didn't come visit and bring you some food!

Thank God Jason.  I hope they did not have to sell their Vegas home before moving.  The situation there is terrible.  My husband worked in post tension there where he created a branch for the largest post tension company in the country.  he tried to tell them not to move forward with it b/c the market was not looking good (this was in 05).  They did not listen and they will be fine (they are a fortune 500 company) BUT so many other will not.  We left in 2006 (Thankfully, we hated it).  things were so bad.  i got my license there and worked for 3 months before we left.  My first listing cost the sellers $30K out of pocket to sell.  I cried when I got my check after I reduced my side of the commission to 2% b/c I did not have the heart to charge them anymore.  It was so sad.

Liz, that rocks that your niece was so successful at a young age due to you.

Jason,

Great to bring your son. I once brought my infant daughter to an open house when my babysitter cancelled. She fell asleep the whole time, so that boredom theory of yours was proven pretty easily! Hope your prospect turns out!

Hi Jason, doesn't it just make your heart leap to know you can share your world with your children? If we were in the corporate world (like I use to be) having a child along was totally taboo. Brandon sounds like he's doing very well. I'm glad. I hope to visit soon!

Later in the rain~Deb
