Today' ADD means "Attention Deficit Disorder"?  But really, what does that mean?

ADD is really just an older term and shouldn't be used to describe someone with ADHD, the Inattentive Type. If so you'll have to explain yourself a little more.  I think I may have some of these symptoms. But is it cause for me to take medication, or is it part of my termperament?

Symptoms of Inattention

Never Sometimes Often Very Often
Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities
Has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
Does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
Does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace
Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities
Avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as homework)
Loses things necessary for tasks or activities (toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools)
Is easily distracted by outside stimuli
Is forgetful in daily activities

Lu, sometimes we call that multitasking or being a dreamer and it's considered a good thing. :)

Lu, there no such thing. it was a disorder that was created when the paddle was abolished.

LU, I have often thought this term was used too frequently when it shouldn't have been.  I have known so many children that were put on drugs for ADD and I just don't know that is the answer.  I have a cousin who is now almost 40 and I remember him being put on drugs way back when.

Do I ever know some people that fit most of these categories.  It seems like there are more people now than ever before, that just can't focus, and have a lack of attention.

I taught special students for years and we tossed around special ed terms freely. In our educational conversations the H in ADHD stands for Hyperactive. And the similar sounding term ODD stands for Oppositional Disability Disorder.

Lu,

I'm intrigued that I can click in the circles above.  Are you collecting data, or did I click in vain?

I think the majority of us display those qualities because we're all trying to do 43 things at the same time.  Too much input these days!

Lu,

As a person who is struggling with ADD myself, I understand your concern.  One of my children has been diagnosed with ADD and the other with ADHD.  Medication is not always the best solution as there are adverse affects which we have experienced.  It is a very real disorder but I do agree with other posts that it is often over diagnosed as a "band-aid" for other issues.

My advice to you is strickly based on my own experience.  Create a business plan and figure out what you need to do on a weekly basis to accomplish these goals by using your conversion rates.  Then time block each day for your appointments, prospecting, phone calls and marketing etc. Always leave time in your day for miscellaneous things that may come up.  Do not do anything during your time block other that what you have blocked for.  You may also want to put systems into place to enhance your organization.  That will be a work in progress as you will have to determine what system works best with you.

Take advantage of you local library, there are many books and publications on this subject.  Once you realize what ADD & ADHD really is, you will understand how to combat your symptoms.

Lastly, if you are not in a coaching program, you may want to consider it.  I feel that my coach really helps me stay on track with my goals and focus.  It also creates accountabiltiy which we all need regardless of where we are at in our business.
