For the last four years on the Saturday before Memorial Day, my son and I have gone with the scouts to decorate the graves at the National Cemetary in Marietta. This is a truly amazing experience. There are over 18,000 graves on about 23 acres and the scouts put flags on every one of them.

Like I said, it's a very moving experience. We had the honor of paying tribute to people like Lt Colonel Nick Karl Stanislo who I don't know but he served in WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam.

But also honored the unknown soldiers like unknown 4503

Remember that Memorial day is about more than potato salad and bbq. Take a few minutes this weekend to give thanks for Lt Col Stanislo, unknown 4503, and the hundreds of thousands of others who have served so that we may live free.

Going to a national Cemetary or a cemetery which has a separate section for veterans can be a moving experience. It definitely brings to life the true costs of Freedom.

Thank you, Bob!

Happy Memorial Day to you and yours.  Let me say in tribute to my father-in-law who passed away earlier this month: God bless America and all the gallant men and women that served with him in WWII.  He fought the war from the air and ground as a paratrooper in the 101 Airborne!

Thank You Bob, for setting an example to the young scouts and for honoring our veterans

Thanks all of you for the kind comments.

I forgot to mention that the scouts plant a flag at each marker and then salute.  There is a nice opening ceremony and this year there was a prayer from George Washington. Well, it was one of the Sons of the American REvolution dressedlike Georg eWashington, but Washing did write the prayer.

Once the scouts start planting the flags the whole thing goesvery quickly.  18,000+ graves are decorated in less than 1/2 hour.

My sons scout troop does the same thing. I did not get to go this year. We live in a small town and do only 2500 graves.

Thank you to everyonwe who has served.
