How To Get People To Comment On Your AR Blog

Well, I'm back to reading again. I got my hands on a great blogging book. Such a nerd, I am. I've been trying to find some information on how to pull people into your blog and leave those cute little things we call "comments". So here is the run down on how to get people to slap you with a comment:

Ask- "Ask and you shall receive" or something like that. It's been beaten into our heads to ask for referrals, right? Asking never hurts. The only thing that can happen is, well you might have to suffer from a little bit of rejection. Rejection isn't so bad, right? I've said before and I'll say it again, the more no's you get...you're close to a YES! So, it's just as easy as pie- ask people to leave comments.

Push Interaction- There's nothing like a good blog to get a conversation going. If you want to get people to comment on your beautiful blog, ask questions. Many people can't resist answering a questions- especially some of us that think we know it all!

Try To Be Open-Minded- If you are writing on a certain topic or situation, leave some parts out. Don't talk about every single thing that is associated with the topic. This will allow others to chime in. If you cover all of the bases then there won't be much to talk about except for "Great Post"

Comment Back- I am so guilty of not doing this. Of course, I am steady working on it. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with it. When someone comments on your blog, respond. It's that easy, If you are the one that is wanting the interaction then, my child, you must interact yourself.

Be humble- No one likes someone that is full of themselves and oh so not humble. Even if you think you are a 'know-it-all', try to simmer down. Don't proclaim to be perfect or that you are incapable of making mistakes. People like to know that you are human. It's okay to blog about failures, mistakes and lack of knowledge.

Spit Fire- Okay, so dont' really spit fire but sometimes a little controversy will get a bland blog going. Of course, I would stay away from Obama and Clinton topics. Those can get really personal and down right raw. It needs to be light controversy. Topics like abortion should be left to the politicians.

Thank Fellow Bloggers- Every one loves getting a little personal note here and there. I know I do. Take some time in your day to shoot a personal e-mail to your fellow blogger thanking them for stopping by your blog. I love it when I get messages like this, makes me feel special and loved.

Bless Fellow Bloggers- If fellow bloggers take the time to stop by your blog and leave their mark, you should do the same. Sometimes this can be very overwhelming so just do as much as you can. For the people who have commented on your blog, go and leave comments on theirs. This is a great way to show that you value their time and is a great way to form friendships.

Set The Tone- You are the owner of your blog. You are the one that sets the tone. You are the one who oversees what is and isn't allowed on your blog. Set up boundaries and the tone.

Wow, Lindsay - some great tips for reciprocal blogging!  I do try so very hard to comment back to those that have visited my blog.  I have received emails from fellow bloggers and they were greatly appreciated!

05/15/2008 10:26 PM by Leesa L. Finley, REALTOR® (Circa Properties)

NIce list of tips to get the conversation going, Lindsay. For me most of these come down to respect. Respect the thoughts or your readers, the time that they spend with you, and their own efforts online.

05/15/2008 10:30 PM by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

Great pieces of advice.  I like the list.  Especially the part in commenting on others......its the law of attraction.  WHat you give..you will receive.

Lindsay you've listed a ton of great points. Commenting, especially for newbies is such an easy way to become known in any web community, especially when writing something insightful or that adds to the conversation.

Lindsay- Looks like you picked a great topic. Getting you readers involve in your posts, and showing them by commenting back when they leave a comment is great, shows respect and as well going on to there post and leaving your comment behind. Brings friendship. I have build a couple here and it all started with commenting. Great post!

Good tips on getting commented... I'd take them to heart.

I also think a successful blog only becomes more successful as people pick up & comment it - the more comments made the more people want to read it ... so it snowballs.

This is a very helpful post. I am sure I will try harder to do some of the things you mentioned.

Questions are a good thing...while we "control" our blogs...it's a relly good, professional idea to keep them polite as well...not always the case.

05/16/2008 07:52 AM by Sally & David Hanson, Southeastern Wisconsin Realtors (First Weber Group)

Nice job & I think you deserved that yellow star.  Thoughts to keep in mind.

Excellent post. I'm always like to see what others are doing make things work

05/16/2008 08:10 AM by Joe Gonzalez - 1st Metropolitan Mortgage

Lindsay, very good advice but......I noticed you didn't folow it:) Meaning you didn't finish your post with a call to action. I only pointed this out because I feel it is one of the most important things to do at the end of a post. Just like any other marketing or advertising our blog post should make folks want to contact us. On AR that's done by commenting on our posts. Always end with a question or call to action.

Now having said all that....I LOVE your post. Well done. What's the title of the book you read?

05/16/2008 08:14 AM by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc

Lindsay, Everytime I see your picture/blog I think of your video and picture you running, jumping, spinning in circles, rolling down a hill :) I loved it!

Love most of the content above... the only thing I disagree with is asking for comments.  I am so rebellious, that often when asked, I won't. Isn't that awful?  I think if the rest of your suggestions are followed, you will get the comments without asking.

It has to be "worthy" of a comment.  Course I don't comment just to get 10? pts either.

05/16/2008 08:33 AM by Kim Wood REALTOR(R), PA (RE/MAX Main Line)

good post..I will keep this in mind..I do look forward to people commenting on my blogs..

05/16/2008 08:41 AM by Michael Shankman Selling Las Vegas 702-498-3383 (Liberty Realty )

are you saying ask friends to comment?  email people and ask for comments?

"Ask- "Ask and you shall receive" or something like that. It's been beaten into our heads to ask for referrals, right? Asking never hurts. "

asking for comments can hurt IMHO. Being too needy for comments has hurt people on ActiveRain.  Asking for comments by ASKing in a post what other people's experiences, thoughts, opinions are is a very good way to start a conversation, I believe.

I'll join the chorus...What book did you read!?!

Great way to get comments is to write about how to get them.  :) I think you are 100% correct on this.  It is not always easy to get comments on all blogs.

05/16/2008 11:04 AM by Naoma Doriguzzi -Wachovia Mortgage (Wachovia Mortgage, FSB)

Lindsay - As usual, this was a terrific post.  I have the opposite problem - I have run out of time to respond to those who comment.  I used to diligently respond to every single comment, but it isn't possible when you develop a large-scale following of readers.  Have a great weekend!

This is a great outline to be a successful blogger Lindsay. I need to practice what you preach!

05/16/2008 11:22 AM by Portland Oregon Real Estate >> Wayne B. Pruner, GRI (Oregon First)

Wow, I didn't realize this post would be so popular. I know someone said that you shouldn't ask because it sounds too needy. I'm thinking you shouldn't say "Oh, please comment". Probably "Comments are welcome" is a better way to go about it. "Will you please comment on my blog? Yes, that sounds a little needy! But, saying "comments are welcomed and appreciated" works just fine! :)

05/16/2008 12:18 PM by Baton Rouge & Denham Springs Relocation Lindsay Pendleton, e-PRO, REW, AHWD (Prime Properties)

Great blog, Lindsay! You're absolutely right. Never hurts to ask...well, almost never. Never say never!

Lindsay, excellent post. I follow the "pay it forward" by visiting the commenting persons site to return the favor by commenting, it does work and allows me to see others posts I may have missed. Plus I have made some fantastic AR friends doing this as well.

05/16/2008 12:44 PM by Duane Marlink, Rate A Home (Rate A Home)

Clients or industry people? There are two different kinds of comments and each blogger tries to target their audience differently. I target clients and majority of the time they don't comment but ask questions instead. Some of the most consumer orientated post for my main site, not AR Blog, are those that provide meaningful information, a listings they would like more info on and that is about it. So what kind of comments are important will determine how many you get. Consumers comment very little becauase typically they are not bloggers...yet.

05/16/2008 03:03 PM by Barnett Associates Real Estate, LLC

LINDSAY - Based on the amount of comments that this post has received, I would say another good way to get comments is to write a post about comments.  You do bring up a lot of good points also.

05/16/2008 03:27 PM by Adam Waldman - Long Island REALTOR® (RE/MAX Best)

Lindsay - Great points you make. Now, how do we get a featured post?

I can't take credit for this . . . I read it on somewhere. Wish I knew who to give credit to.
But, this stuck with me and I have tried to remember it when blogging or commenting. To get people to read your blog, or to comment on it:

  1. Be Grateful
  2. Be Humble
  3. Be Patient
  4. Be Generous
  5. Show Respect
  6. Be Motivating
  7. Be Brave

Overall, some good rules to live by.

Lindsay, all of your ideas are great, but the best way to get people to comment on your AR Blog is to offer cash for comments.  Even 10 cents/comment adds up over time.

Lindsay,

I appreciate what you wrote here, being new, I think your comments will be very helpful. I've only written one blog so far and did not get much response, so now I can read over your points and think about how they can help me.
