I have been taking my son to and from his martial arts class recently, so we get about 25 minutes in the car together each way.  This is becoming one of my very favorite times, since it's just the two of us.

He has begun riding in the front seat with me, which makes it seem more fun for both of us.  For him, he feels more mature, and for me, I feel less like a chauffeur.  It also doesn't hurt that he stopped requiring me to wear the uniform (see photo at right).

Since I drive a minivan, the back windows don't roll down (unless I fork over money for a newer model sometime soon).  As a result, part of the fun of riding in the front seat is the ability to play with the windows (and the radio, and the A/C controls, etc.).  One of his favorite things to do is to crack the window just a hair so that it makes a high-pitched squealing sound from the wind.  This is particularly fun for him when I am on the phone, and it seems to provide true joy for him.

The other day, he asked me, "Can we ride home with the windows down?  I want to get that "wind-blown" look!"  No, he didn't actually use air quotes (although I have seen him do this) - it just seemed to make more sense when I was writing it.

Needless to say, we both arrived home with that special wind-blown look that he wanted.  It was a lot of fun!  He usually likes to lay his head on the door for maximum effect (full-on wind blowing).  If you haven't done this lately, you are missing out on a good time.

We have some good conversations, too.  For example, on Tuesday, I found out that he likes simple cartoon characters "with beady little eyes and no noses".  He also told me that he wished that he had a cartoon face like that sometimes, with "eyebrows for strong emotion, like a unibrow, and a thin little smile, pencil-drawn".  Very specific!

Spend time with your kids one-on-one when you have a chance.  You won't regret it.  I generally have at least as much fun as they do!

Very Very Very True.  One of the wonders of being a realtor, sometimes you actually have time for things like that!

Enjoy those special times as they grow up fast. BTW, enjoy the wind blown look - one day it may be impossible!

Oh I just love going for car rides with the family - no phones and just good conversation!  My son just turned 3 and am amazed at what he talks about with me sometimes.  It is the simple things in life that make me happiest.

I am looking forward to those days when I won't be considered a chauffeur as well.

They grow so fast.  Every moment is important.  chokecherry

I am primarily the pick up person for my 22 month old daughter.  From the time I pick her up til her mother comes home is so awesome most days (most because some days she is cranky)!

It's great that you spend time with your kids!  Keep it up...They grow up, oh so fast...Create a bunch of memories...  :)

How sweet.  I love those moments when you learn a little more about the person you created, and gain a little more insight into their personality.

It's my son's birthday today, he is 7 years old, and it's a beautiful, sunny day outside.  We'll have to get outside and do something, though I have a feeling he will just want to build his new Lego sets all day.

Even though my children are grown adults...I spend time with them....even though they just want a free lunch... lol. Seriously, it's nice for me to spend time with my kids now....when they were teens they just wanted to hang out with their friends. Enjoy it like you are Jason....it passes by oh so quick.

Jason, since I don't have any kids yet, I guess I'm gonna have to borrow yours for a few days.  Since I've been training in martial arts for over 2 years, my wife is adamant that our future kids start with martial arts at a young age.

p.s. Why aren't there any photos of the "wind blown" look here on the blog -- it could make for a fun new profile picture!

Crouch, you're a good sport. I once told a joke at a high school reunion about being a man's man and not driving a minivan. My friend wrinkled his brow, "I drive a minivan." Oops.

I guess it's "Oops" again here ;)

Jason, you should join your son in the martial arts class.  It will be great fun for you both.  Not to mention the exercise that you get.  My son and I are in the same martial arts.  He is 13 and when we are supposed to pair up, he is quick to chose me as his partner.  He likes the "free" hits opportunities.

Sounds like good times Jason.  I enjoy my time alone with my son.  I am lucky enough to get him up and going in the morning and then to school.  These are times when we can connect, just the two of us.  Thanks for sharing your story.

I love the things that your son comes up with.  He notices things.

My little baby girl just got her Driver's Permit yesterday.  It will be a relief when she can drive herself, but those times in the car together........................::sniffle::

We had a great celebration ride home together, sipping our energy boost Jamba Juices, me being weird so she says, "Okay, mom" with an eye roll,  singing Springsteen at top volume.  Nice.

Jason - Those are my favorite moments in life.  My son is 8 - where did THAT time go.  We have so much fun together when it is just us.  It is so great that you have the time with him - he will remember it forever!  (And, so will you!)

All of my children are grown adults with kids of their own and it seems like yesteday that they were in diapers, yes I said diapers.  It is not that far from diapers to grand kids, enjoy the time while you have it.  :-)

Jason,

I spent time with my 3 children yesterday at their dojo. My daughter was practicing her kata and I was practicing patience skills with my two boys who don't want to join the dojo, but like to run around and immitate just the same, luckily this is a good place to do it:-)

My son asked me two questions on the way yesterday:

1.  Is it illegal to not stop at a stop sign in the rain?

2. Is it illegal for people not to get married?

He's got an inquiring mind.

Great post Jason!  I can't wait for the day that I can do that with my soon to be born daughter!

Jason sounds like a great time!  Enjoy them, they go by all to quickly!  Although, now that Brittney is 20, we are finding MANY grown up things to do, like going to the spa!  (And she can contribute to the cost!!!).  My 8 year old has that same silly sense of humor as your son, he's always cracking us up!!

Jason - As soon as I walk in the door at night, my twin 4-year olds attack me.  I let them drag me to the floor and we roll around for 15- 20 mins.  Without a doubt, it is the best part of the day and a good reminder of what really matters in life.

My daughter is now 18. The conversations are quite a bit different O_o  18 year old attitude just can't be duplicated by younger children. Would you like to borrow my daughter for your next car ride? I highly recommend the windows-down drive. That should do the trick! =P

Jason, I drive my kids to school on many days, and when they aren't fighting, they too crack me up.  And I relate to the special one on one time with your son - ours is hockey time.

I have a great memory of my dad driving the van down my street with me on the roof and him using the cb/loudspeaker to announce that we won the tee ball game. Sure CPS would take away your kids for this nowadays, and who in the world has a loudspeaker on their van? Still...memories with Dad rule.

You're a good guy, Jason. Tom Plant and I were talking about you recently at the Real Agent Help breakfast and he agreed.

Jason, Since I have been teaching my youngest son to drive, we get a lot of time together in the car.   Although, I think he is sick of me telling him how to drive! :)

Jason- One on one time with each child is so valuable and long reaching. Especially with Dads.

Jason- Ha! I had to laugh at the window down enough to make noise, especially while you are on the phone! It seems kids have some Universal habits. It is nice to spend time one on one, you find out things you did not know that you did not know...you know?! Ok, I am funny today, but seriously, this is a good reminder to me and I intend to spend some time with my son today!

Jason, I have always taken and picked my daughter up from school. She is now 14 and not so "cute" most mornings, but I still enjoy it when she doesn't think I"m ruining her life by actually being her mother, HA!  Let Lisa Hill know that I will trade her a 14 year old for her 18 year old. Really though, I live for those special moments. They grow up far too quickly!
