Favicons are those little icons you see in the address bar next to the http:// at the top of a web page.

Favicon

I always wondered how they were created and placed in the address bar. I stumbled upon it and decided to create my own from an image I have on my computer. You can actually use any image you want or you can find free ones availble on the net.

I used the following website to create our Favicon you see above.

Or you can go to Favicon Generator and create yourself one.

Once you download your Favicon you will need to unzip the file and upload it to your website in your root directory and then you will need to place the following line of code after the <head> tag of your index page: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico">

It is best to use a square graphic and of course I used a round one and I will probably change it after I post this.

I was able to place the line of code in our Wordpress blog in the header file.

Jay-I have been thinking about doing this and trying to figure out how.  Monika and her own favicon...I love it!

I guess picking the right one helps and it wasn't that hard. Hopefully you will try and do it.

Hey, that's cool!  I have wondered how favicons are "done", thanks for finding out and posting about it!  I have "Bookmarked" your article.

Oh!  I just asked my wife how to do this and she said she would show me this weekend.  Now I will surprise her and do it myself.

Jay - you do the best tutorials! I'm going to try this on my wordpress blog...it's been painfully neglected.

Jay, you do a great job with the computer tips even if you are a Red Sox fan.  Spring training is all most over ............ GO YANKEES!!!

Jay -- good tutorial,  I had no idea how that was done -- I thought it was magic!  Now we know it can be done.  Thanks.

Interesting Jay - You are becoming quite the tech tutor!

Very interesting.  There are few other sites that do the same thing.  I usually, have my graphic artist  enhance the image so it won't display faint when you use it on your website.  This is useful if you want to brand your site.

Of course I tried to install it on my WordPress site and I failed to get t to work. Back to the drawing board.

keep at it Jay and I'm sure you'll get it to work soon.

Jay - you have to help me understand why I would need a favicon? Is it more for an outside blog?

Hey George - Red Sox rule:)

Judy, yes if you had your own website or outside blog.

Hi Jay, Boy I feel in a tech mood today....3 word press blogs all in one sitting, and I don't even have one LOL :)  How do you pronounce this word Favicon?  Can you divide it up into syllables for me?

04/29/2008 04:56 PM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Jay,Thanks...that's the only way I can try to pronounce new words :)  It worked good for Romanian...how's your German coming along ......

04/29/2008 06:05 PM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

Slowly, I listen to CD's everyday for at least an hour. I can understatnd a lot more than I did 3 months ago but I stil find it hard to get the words out of my mouth to form a coherent sentence.

By th etime I try and say something everyone else on the phone has moved on to another topic. So I just laugh a lot.

Once you are in Germany you will be surprised at how much you will pick up, and how much you have learned :)  The trip is still on for this summer isn't it?

04/29/2008 07:19 PM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

We would like to go for at least 3 weeks and we are busy and we are saving. Hopefully we will get there this summer or early fall.

Hi, Jay! I just created my Favicon - thank you!!

However, once I created it with the Favicon Generator you posted...I got stuck. Unfortunately, I don't know what a "root directory" is, nor do I know how to find my index page. Can you help??

Thanks in advance! =)

Thanks for the info Jay - I'm on my way to check it out right now  :) Cheers!

Cheers!

Maura, you will need to know how to access all your files on your website. You then would need to know how to upload your files there too.

It looks like your website is maintained by a webdesigner. I could help but I would need to know how to access your website.

Good post - thanks for sharing!

07/12/2008 07:13 AM by Norma J. Elkins (Triple "E" Realty)

Thanks, Jay! I am going to email our website people and ask them to do it.

Is it possible to put our favicon on our AR site? I'm thinking probably not, but I'm just wondering!

Thanks again for your help!

I'm going to have to read this one several times before I get the hang of it.  It seems a little complicated for me, but I'm willing to give it a try, just so I can have something different than everyone else.
