It's a great feeling when someone comments on a blog post you made.  It's exciting and confirming.  It shows that they are interested in what you are saying and want to engage with you.  Many times I see posts that people make comments on but the original poster never comes back to engage with the commenter.  Not engaging with your commenter's is the quickest way to kill the buzz on your AR post.  I am not suggesting that you make a comment back to every commenter because that is too time consuming after each comment that is made.  That's too time consuming and fills up your post with a bunch of single comments back.  This tends to make it hard for others to follow the thread and other comments made in the thread.  What I have seen many people do though, which I really like is make a follow up comment after a few were made and address the commenter by name in your follow up comment.  Following is a style that I really like.  This sample is a screen shot that was taken from a follow up comment made on post http://activerain.com/blogsview/416359/How-To-Add-an

ActiveRain Comments

Few reasons I like this style.

1. It addresses each member by their name, which makes it more personal

2. The member's names are hyper-linked to their profile.  This allows other people reading the blog to easily link to the members profile directly from your comment.  It's a great way to show appreciation.

3. Multiple commenters' are addressed in 1 follow up post.

Of course this is just my opinion and my preferred style.  I would love to hear other's input on what style they use or like.

HAPPY COMMENTING!

I actually have seen a few people do that.  I did not know that was a style, but now I know thanks for the tip.  I think that is something that I will incorporate.

I agree,  I always try to stop back and follow up.  At the very least, it keeps the blog "neat".  All questions answered and all comments responded to.  Good topic.

Great suggestion - I'm still exploring my way around here and didn't quite get it that I need to comment back. Thanks for enlightening me.

Thank you for putting this out there.  I never thought to do the hyperlink on the name.  Is there a way to do that fast?  Normally, when I include someone, I cut and paste their name.  Is there a better way?

Thanks Ryan for your comment.  I wouldn't say it's really a style but just something I have seen used and a way I have done it.  BTW - I read through your blog and it has some great stuff in it.  Very informative.

Thanks Brian for your feedback

Jessica - Welcome to ActiveRain.  Yes, commenting back helps keep your post alive.

Mark - What I usually do is copy just the first name that displays under their comment after the date and "by" and paste that into my comment back.  If you do that then the pasted name will automatically be hyper-linked.

I guess I better get busy on my own blogs. I have just been commenting on certain responses, never stopped to think that some might think that is rude.

Nancy - Agreed! Thanks for your feedback.

Hello Kevin - I wouldn't go as far as to say it is rude when not commenting back but instead it is nice when you do :)

Great post! I never thought about creating a hyper-link for their names.  I will start doing that from now on.

Misty, I try to respond back to those that comment on my blogs, and sometiems I go to THEIR blog so they will see that I read theirs too.  But, how do you hyperlink their name??

Misty - Great suggestion. We all need reminders like this one to continually improve this community.

Thanks!

Thanks D. Bass and Marzena for your feedback.

Vickie - great idea about going to the commenters blog.  I like that.  What I usually do is copy just the first name that displays under their comment after the date and "by" and paste that into my comment back.  If you do that then the pasted name will automatically be hyper-linked.  Or you can highlight their name and click the small chain icon at the top of the comment editor and place their profile page link in the "Link URL" field.

Misty - Interesting idea - If I like the comment someone made I just click on the link at the bottom of their comment and go to their profile to learn more about them then look at their blog. Sometimes I find something I want to comment on sometimes not but in the meantime I have learned something new about someone else.
