Some of my customers have asked me for an example letter to send to the Credit Bureau, since I used to be a loan officer with first hand knowledge learning to help my clients.
First off, make sure you can provide proof (never mail original receipts - make copies & keep all originals in a safe place). Also, make sure your credit report is current, less than 90 days old. Ok, here goes....
Attention: (put in name of Credit Bureau - Experian, TransUnion or Equifax)
Report Number (this number is found on the top of your credit report)
Date:
To Whom It May Concern:
After reviewing my credit report, I have found inaccurate information that I would like to have corrected.
The following item(s) are incorrect: (This is where you list the name of the creditor, the account type, account number)
I am disputing (describe what is inaccurate concerning that account).
I would like to request the removal (or what specific change you are wanting) of this item, so please correct the information. (If you are providing some type of proof - add this next line...) I am providing proof of the inaccuratcy, see copy enclosed.
Sincerely,
Your name: (use full legal, no nicknames)
Your date of birth:
Your Mailing Address:
Your Social Security Number:
Your Phone Number: (best phone number to reach you during daytime hours)
You can NOT combine your dispute into one letter, naming all 3 credit bureaus, you must submit an individual letter to each credit bureau per inaccurate info. If only 2 are reporting something wrong, then only 2 credit bureaus will need letters. These credit bureaus will allow you to file a complaint online, but mailing seemed to get the quickest response for my past customers.
