A beautiful 70 degree Saturday in Denver offered a test drive for our support group. We are a group of single women homeowner's that are independent, spirited and have a can do attitude. We had agreed that if any of us had a handyman problem, particularly those just requiring more than two hands, we'd be there for each other.

While the afternoon was balmy, the forecast called for a snowstorm that evening, on into Sunday. Hard to believe, but that's the mercurial nature of nature in Colorado.  Usually that's not a concern, but today I had a problem. My sliding glass door was jammed and wouldn't close completely. Not conducive to comfort or conservation of energy with the storm rapidly approaching.

What's a woman to do, especially on a Saturday. I fiddled with the door and tried to locate the source of the problem for quite a while. It appeared  the door would have to be removed for further diagnosis and I certainly couldn't accomplish this task solo, so I called Charlotte.

A southern belle that exudes charm and confidence, Charlotte arrived in a short time with her tool belt  fashionably slung around her tiny waist. We had a good laugh at the contradiction, and went to work.

Literally within minutes Charlotte assessed the situation. A pin had come out of it's holder and was jamming the path of the door. Charlotte whipped out her crowbar and jimmied the door enough that I could push the culprit back in it's proper place. Of course we sat and talked for awhile, decided we'd worked up an appetite, and went out for dinner. Mission accomplished, plus we had an impromptu glass of wine and dinner.

So suggest to your single women clients and friends that they establish this valuable network for themselves. It doesn't take much time and provides camaraderie and security that there will be help there when you need it. I know I'm heading to the hardware store for a crowbar just as soon as I finish shoveling the eight inches of snow we have!

Go get'em girl. . . get a new toolbelt while you are there.  It is so fashionable amongst us girls.  It not only serves as a fashion statement for a giggle, but boost our sense of confidence saying, "Girls Rule", a can do attitude we can help each other adopt. Our natural nature as women is to want to help others as we nurture and build friendships and relationships. I feel very honored that Joan considered me capable enough to find a solution to her problem . . . uh ummmm, let's not call it a problem, but a challenge.  We came, we saw, we conquered!  There wasn't a man in the house, except for Hayden, the dog.

As we build relationships and bonds in our lives, it is wonderful that we can see our differences, our diversity, and our contribution to be of service to each other.  Besides, it is fun to learn about those differences.  Yes, I am a determined southern bell through and through.  I love the culture here, but I probably won't change years of southern training, that unforgettable southern drawl, that desire to help others: "Can I get you a glass of tea, or a toolbelt?", as I'm sure to remember everyone's name: honey, dawlin, shugah!, and the best thing I can share with all:  Southern girls know, men may come and go, but their girlfriends last fahevah!
