Buffet fans Unite! There is something about this time of year that makes Jimmy Buffett even more wonderful, like he sings, "I need a holiday," or "I need to go where there ain't any snow," how about "fly me to St. Somewhere," or one of my favorites... "nothing can replace your fears like an island song."

Jimmy Buffett is a valuable resource for us in business. First, he makes great music that puts a smile on your face. Second, he is a master of "branding"; his name conjures up a specific brand. Third, he knows who is market is and sells to them exceptionally well.

If you and I would serve our customer base the way he does we'd be much more successful. He listens to his customers, considers what they want then fills the need.

Another area that we could learn from is he does his job while having fun. If we'd have more fun our customers would have fun. It is also good to remember he sings, "I don't do know business that don't make me smile."

I'm a Parrothead and I recognize his musical genius and his business genius.

What do others think?

Thanks for sharing.

18 Comments on Changes in Attitudes, Jimmy Buffett as a Business Guru

I have always admired his lifestyle. He's having a good time and getting paid for it. If I was half as successful as him, I would be quite well off.

Love his BOOKS too!  He definately has the total brand - and the lifestyle that appeals to more than just the Parrotheads (like us!  We named our daughter after his!)

Just had to pop in and say hello to a fellow parrot head...Jimmy made margaritaville not just a destination, but a state of mind.  Many a day when I can't change my latitude, but need to change my attitude...it's  simply a cd away. Sail On....

I have been a parrot head for many years, at times going to different cities to attend his shows. It's neat running into some of the same people in line for tickets each year...I never see (or recognize) them anywhere else during the course of the year. It saddened me a few years ago when he decided to cut down on his tour schedule in Atlanta from 3 shows to 1, but this has allowed me to expand to Nashville, Tampa, etc. to see him, and road trips are always fun! Now, as I'm sure you know, he's opening a casino in Biloxi. His business sense, as you state, is amazing. What struck me as well, is the fact that he's giving back to the community. Biloxi/Gulfport were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and the Federal money wasn't provided to rebuild in these areas to the same degree as New Orleans. Buffett, while he's of course going to make a killing off of his newest endeavor, he is giving back to his home state by helping bring in the tourist (and gambling) dollars. Thanks, Jim, Great post!

Great idea there. We have a local acoustic singer who plays lots of Jimmy and I go out of my way to see him when I see he's playing at a bar nearby.

Hi Jim,

I agree completely. This is the time of year I start humming a lot of Jimmy Buffet songs...especially 'changes in attitude, changes in latitude...'

Hello fellow Parrothead! You tapped into something here: when you're doing what you love, you can't help but excel!

That's the thing about Parrotheads, you never know when you will run into the next one, but you can usually spot them by the smile on their face and the tune in their heart!

I too have noticed the "musical master brander" and his consistency with his name, product, etc.  What a fun reminder and example to all of us of what path we need to be taking!

Ahhh,  there is nothing better than going to a concerts or MOTM and seeing ALL different kinds of peeps enjoying themselves.

Hey, is there a Parrothead Group on A/R?  Now there is an idea!

Come to Pensacola, I think Jimmy was here about six times, once I was buying a drink while laying around at the beach and I though I saw him but you know I said no way. I found out later he was hanging out with the owner of the club and that it was him. His sister owns a resturtant in Gulf Shores about an 30 minutes from here. Yea you could learn a lot and they say he is as he appears.
