We FINALLY added a spell checker to the editor.  Really sorry about the very, very, very long wait.  To use the spell checker just click the ABC check mark box on the right side of the editor tool bar.  It will then underline spelling mistakes with red-squiggles... just click on the words to see new options.

We also added "email me" links to to blog views and your profiles on Localism, making it easier for people to get in touch with you.

We changed the way the contact form works.  It pops up a new window now.  While not impossible, this is a lot harder for bots to spam - so hopefully that cuts down on spam some.  Let us know if you have problems with these new forms - it's pretty wiz-bang-javascript.

Thank you.  A simple tool like a spell-checker is possibly the most valued and appreciated.

Ben, Good morning and thank you for the hard work, spellcheeeeeccckkkk is a great tool.  I won't use it right now , I don't want to wear it out just yet, I think all my spelling here is correct.  Have a great day.  Bob

AR Staff,

Thanks for listening and getting this feature implemented.  You have made a lot of us a little happier today!

01/27/2007 07:16 AM by Ron Withers - Mortgage Professional (Sr. Loan Officer, LMB) (Town & Country Mortgage Services, Inc.)

Oh, clever ones, what will you bless us with next!

PS: Are the clicks from the network or from both the network and the public?  Are the counters smart, as to whether a click is inside or outside?

Ben...

"wiz-bang-javascript"......

Am I supposed to know what that means? :)

Your new spell checker doesn't.

Okay. I admit it, I'm just messing with you :)

P.S. Are the comment notification check boxes going to be fixed soon?

Guys, you are doing great - thanks for the upgrades.

Don't want to sound ungrateful, but is there any chance of allowing us to add words to the Spell Check?  It would be nice if my last name and my city didn't trigger the red squigglies.

One of the tricks I learned here on ActiveRain was to highlight my post and then use the spell check on the Google Toolbar.  It is so quick andyou can edit and add your won words - which is real nice.

Keep up the good work.

Now Have a Blessed Day,

John Occhi, Hemet CA REALTOR

TLW:  I've heard about this notification bug from a few people but can't reproduce it.  If you have time could you go into "gory" detail on how and when this happens and send it via the Contact ActiveRain link (bottom right of all screens) so it gets in our feedback loop and we can track it?

John:  We were hoping people would just use Google Toolbar or build in things like the spell checker in FireFox but everyone wanted to editor spell checker as well.  It's REALLY limited in terms of what we can and can't do with it.  To put this in perspective, the editor we're using (http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/) is something like 10,000 lines of very delicate code... customizing it has proved to be very tricky (kind of like "can you add this feature to MS Office")  :)

We're working on better editing options as we realize the editor we have isn't exactly the "cats pajamas" and most of us write somewhere else and then paste it in (which, really, might just be the best solution).

Thanks Ben.  The new changes are great.  I really like the email option.

YOU HAVE TO ACTUALLY USE IT.

Horray! You are spoiling us...which leads to asking for more  ;-)

OK, Now is there a function we can add to not lose the work we are typing. I know some people do their posts in writely or word doc and move it over... If we can "park it" (TLW word) and get back to it that would be cool. (like a incomplete function or draft function)..

Possible ??

Wahoo!!  Great Stuff...Thank You!  Now I have no excuse!  Wait a minute...wahoo isn't a word...ooops

01/27/2007 09:19 AM by Ravi Shah (Prudential Fox & Roach, REALTORS® )

YIPEE! One other little thing, is there a solution other than typing a graphic for every comment we make?

01/27/2007 09:20 AM by Suzi Gravenstuk, MS Broker License # 17787 (MGC Realty, LLC)

Can Active Rain get any better?  Ofcourse it can.. just when you think you have the best, it only gets better!  I am sure I am speaking for others here when I say this that I have seen some poor written blogs, comments and this definitely does help those individuals out (if they use it).  Thanks A/R Staff!

01/27/2007 09:25 AM by Nima Rezvan (Mortgage Broker)

Michele:  We already have a draft option... when posting just change :Visibility: Public to Visibility: Draft

Suzi:  We do the stupid "typing the graphic" thing to prevent spammers from writing a 3 line program to comment on every blog on the site... I know - it's a hassle.  We're working on some other spam prevention techniques... maybe this will go away soon.

TLW:  Best bug report ever!  Thanks - it should be fixed going forward now.

01/27/2007 09:29 AM by Ben Wiseley (ActiveRain)

Ben...

Ooops. I may have accidentally just sent you another bug report.

I did not know we should NOT respond to a finalized bug report :)

Please laugh at my last message and then delete it. LOL....

P.S. Thank you. It's working now. Ahhhh....Wonderful :)

Thanks for enhancing the editor. This little tool will make us all look a little more polished by catching those typos that inevitably pop up when we're furiously typing to get our thoughts down on blog! ... How ironic, there's a red squiggly under 'blog'.

Great improvements.  The pop up box should eliminate much of the spam.

The improvements sound great but ever since the late great Paul Sullins told me about the spellcheck in the Google toolbar I've been using that.

01/27/2007 11:20 AM by Roxanne & Shannon Moore-Realtors, North Port FL (Re/Max Anchor Realty)

I use Firefox 1.5.0.9 (the latest version) and Windows XP SP2 with the latest updates.  The three times I attempted to use the spell checker it crashed Firefox and put me back to the Windows home screen.  In each case I had to restart Firefox and re-log into AR.

01/27/2007 11:27 AM by Dan Bales, Broker

Thanks Ben (and Maureen)- I didnt realize and now will venture out to say this is becoming so very easy and beginner friendly that there really are no excuses left to start hammering out some posts!

01/27/2007 11:48 AM by Michele Connors, Broker in Charge (Coldwell Banker First Realty Morehead City)

One of my excuses for not using google bar spell checker is that I am clinging to remnants of the old IE 6 on a tool bar.  I could select google as my default search and drop a fourth tool bar on my screen.  Or, I could buy a bigger monitor.  hmmm.   There are other things I enjoyed about the google toolbar.  But thank you for all your efforts.

01/27/2007 12:03 PM by JudyAnn Lorenz, PREVA (Bar JD Communications)

Thanks so much! I love having an "on board" spell check here on Active Rain. Although I have the Google spell check and the new Firefox with a built in underline for questionable spelling, an extra layer of spell protection is great! (I always blog on the fly instead of using a text editor offline first, as I probably should.)

I like the constant improvements here on AR, and I appreciate that you listen to the members as you make those changes and improvements.

01/27/2007 12:44 PM by Angela Parker (WickedWriter.com)

Spelling checking is a great addition to the tools. I went back into my most recent post and it correctly identified several misspellings/typos which I would never have caught without it.

I also like what you are doing with the "email me" contact options.

Thank you for your continuing efforts to add good practical features.

01/27/2007 04:39 PM by Knightlines Mortgage Services, LLC

and I thought that popped up because of Google toolbar or something... Is it good that every-time a cool new feature pops up on your computer you just assume it's from Google?

Thanks AR!

01/28/2007 08:23 AM by Chris Drayer (FloorPlanOnline)

Firefox itself does not have a built-in spell checker.  One is available on the Google Toolbar as some AR's have mentioned when it is manually added as a Firefox extension.

01/28/2007 08:59 AM by Dan Bales, Broker

Dan:  Firefox does have a built-in spell checker. I don't personally use Google Toolbar (as it adds everything you browser to their indexes and I don't want our testing environments indexed into Google which are, sort of, hidden because only a few people ever use them).

You probably haven't updated in a while... it's native in version 2.0  http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

01/28/2007 09:18 AM by Ben Wiseley (ActiveRain)

One thing that I continue to be impressed with about Active Rain, is how often the staff responds to the members requests for improvements.

If you keep this up, AR will have every feature every realtor ever wanted in a blogging platform.

Three Cheers for the AR team!

01/28/2007 10:34 AM by Ben Wiseley (ActiveRain)

Ben,

I stand corrected.  Thank you for the clarification.

I am using Firefox 1.5. and do not usually update to the latest version until it has been out for a while especially when it is a major upgrade.  You may be aware of the recent IPOD version update problems. I got hit recently by Microsoft myself.  I had  Windows XP set to "auto update" to get the latest security fixes.  However, Microsoft decided to include Internet Explorer 7.0 and so, without my knowledge IE 7.0 was installed.  While I prefer Firefox, many of my real estate web programs and Metrolist MLS do not support it forcing me to use IE.  Guess what, I had problems with IE 7.0 and so uninstalled it.  When I then used IE 6.0 it no longer worked properly.  I called MLS support who walked me thru over half a dozen setting changes to have it funtion as it did prior to the installation of IE 7.0.  I was told this is happening whenever someone goes to IE 7.0 and then uninstalls it which is happening quite often.  Needless to say, XP is no longer set to "auto update"!

Dan

If it's possible to change the spell checker in any way Ben you might tell it that "NRA" (National Rifle Association) is not an acceptable substitute spelling for NAR. ;-)
