SEO
Techniques- The Must Do's For Your Blog and Website
There is so much that you can be
doing for great Search Engine Optimization; you can read
books and more books on the subject and still not know all there is to
know about SEO. The world of SEO is constantly changing and since you
are in the business of Real Estate there is no way you should take that
much time to learn it all. But you do need to learn the basics.
I love to learn about SEO
and Internet Marketing. I must tell you that this was not
always the case. We started with websites and the Internet years ago
when email first came out. I remember brokers who did not
want their agents to put their email addresses on their business cards!
Can you just imagine doing business today without email? We bought into
all the Realtor.com bells and whistles, Know Your Neighborhood,
Advanced Access ( back then it was terrible), and any other program
that we could buy to be all over the Internet. We did not understand
the Internet, did not know what SEO was and the end result was a lot of
wasted money. We then decided to just quit the net. You
see, in our
part of the world it is like the opposite of Silicon Valley. Still
today, there are many people here who do use email or have to go to the
library to get on line. It is just not the priority of many people here
and that goes across all income brackets. We were off line for about 5
years and the crazy thing is- it did not hurt our business in any way,
shape or form.
I vowed to myself I was not going to be taken advantage of in my
ignorance again about Internet marketing. When we decided to go back on
line in January 2007, I was determined to learn all I could about SEO
and Internet marketing. I stayed up all night for nights on end
studying everything I could get my hands on. I made it a point to stay
away from any Real Estate related pointers as that is how we got taken
the last time around. So I studied people and systems who make money on
line selling products and information. I joined different forums and
started testing the waters with hobbies of mine to see if I could get
the results that these gurus were getting. I listened to hours of
audios, watched hours of videos and webinars and bought lots of ebooks
to study. It was well worth the time I invested to learn what I felt I
needed to learn in order to make wise choices in the future regarding
our real estate business.
The
following techniques are those that are up front and center
in the Internet marketing world:
The most
important SEO technique is writing the right
Titles.
Your title on your blog is the Headline that you are putting in that
top line write above the main body of your text. Your title
must have your keywords in it if you want to be found on Google.
You
can read more about keywords in my post about writing with
the correct keywords. For your website you need to have a keyword rich
title for each page on your website because Google looks at each page
on your website and ranks each one as if it its' own page.
Of course if you are blogging on Active Rain you must be living under a
rock in the rain if you have not heard over and over again that
Content
is king.
If you write good content
and have keyword titles you will be found.
Give the searchers what they want and Google will reward you. This
being said, just writing good content with a keyword title is not going
to get you found the same way that using these techniques together
will. Your content must also have the keywords from your title
sprinkled throughout your post. I also believe that you should have the
same words from your title down at the end of your post somewhere. You
can read more about this by reading my post
;
Blogging for the longtail.
Ah, the famous linking
thing! This is where so many people especially
real estate agents have made some very big boo boos! Linking is one of
the most important actions that you can do to get Google to love you!
But! Watch out to whom you are linking to and how many links you have
on your blog and your site. You must have quality links in both your
posts and on your website. You want sites that have a high page rank
with Google to link to you. Be careful about reciprocal linking because
that does very little if anything at all for your page rank and your
Google placement. The best links you can have are your
internal links within your own blog or website. To read more about
linking read my post about
using
linking strategies.
Keywords
in your URL is a technique that is constantly debated but
most of the research that I have read about shows that your URL, your
domain name, should be using the keywords that you want to be found
for. This all has to jive together; your title, your keywords, your
content, your domain names. The most important reason to use keyword
rich domain names is for the searcher, the consumer. It is easy to
remember and easy to locate.
You want to create a blog
and a website that makes for very good spider
food. You want those search engine spiders to love to eat
your blog and
your website and you want them to get so addicted to the food on your
site and your blog that they keep coming back for more. That goes back
to content but also using a habit of going back to your important posts
and pages to freshen them up with new words and updates.
Spiders
love HTML, they do not like flash. Do not fill up your
pages and posts with flash. Do not make one of those movies to open
your website. And please do not put up all that flash on the top of
your website where your titles are supposed to go. You see, that shows
up as a big white blank. Make sure that you title all your images so
that the spiders can see the html of your alt1image tag. Remember,
Spiders can't see images. Keep the Spiders fed!
Now, all that being said, remember that humans are the ones reading
your blog and your website so don't spam it with keywords and make sure
you write in an pleasing style and appealing to the human eye.
You also
need to be blogging at least 3 to 5 times per week.
Google loves fresh content.
So Start Blogging!
