PART ONE     (P TWO)  (P Three)

Sunshine and the thaw of the mild temperatures had me thinking spring and compost already this morning!

I love compost - people used to think I was a little nuts when I'd give them a tour of my yard and gardens - then the compost bins!

When you collect all your kitchen waste separately from the garbage that gets thrown out, you truly get to see what it amounts to. I live alone downtown and fortunately take part in the Kelowna Community Gardens. My waste is put into one of those plastic salad bins that you buy organic greens in. It fills often in 2 days!

Here's the paradox. We're throwing food into landfill. Yet at the same time the earth's growing soils are exhausted. Don't you think there is something wrong with this picture?

If you live on property it is very easy for you to create a composting area in your yard. Some people even successfully compost on balconies.

And believe it. Composting is easy. You just have to learn a few simple things to make it work - and be diligent with it. It isn't a big mystery. You can create usable compost in weeks, and very quickly in warm weather.

I will be writing on composting a bit later. In the meantime, if you don't compost now, you can think about a way and a place to do it.

I am interested to know what your area does with composting. We need to create more awareness for communities and individuals to develop programs to take on the problem of waste.

Think of composting as the property improvement that it is!

IT CAN BE DONE - WE CAN DO IT!

Deborah, Composting is a great idea. We have a big plastic composter and all the veggie scraps, coffee grinds and eggshells go into it. We'll til it into the garden pretty soon.

Deborah, I don't have a huge yard and my concern is all the animals it will attract who for some reason are not at all afraid of my dogs...I had thought about it last year but that's a concern of mine.  We have an overrun of raccoons and squirrels here--I don't know if the town does anything but recycle, it's something to look into.

02/12/2008 05:26 PM by Carole Provenzale Owner, Feng Shui Long Island & New York (Feng Shui Long Island & New York City)

My dad lives in Vancouver and he made himself a "worm box" where he puts his kitchen waste so the racoons, skunks and squirrels can't get it.  I just toss it all to the donkey and chickens and dog.... selectively of course.

At the Maui landfill, they will take yard waste and shred it up and they make huge compost piles that they then resell.  This island generates a lot of yard waste when you consider palm tree fronds etc.

Hi Deborhah! Great post on compost! but I take offense, you say, "Sunshine and the thaw of the mild temperatures had me thinking spring and compost already this morning!"

Pshaw! There is some sun here to heat solar panels every now and again but we are in a blizzard and blanketed with snow daily! I say quit braggin!

PS...I WOULD like to hear more about your composting!

02/12/2008 09:04 PM by Mary Bigelow, Renewing Your Life! (Ma's Marketing)

Deborah, I hear what you're saying.  However, I've composted over the years and end up with way too much compost to ever use.  I then have this ginormous compost pile that just keeps growing and growing.  As a result, I no longer compost.  But I have a septic tank, does that count? :-)

Deborah - This is a great thing to do.  I am very interested, and my flower beds would probably love that.

Hi- We live on acreage with no zoning so it's easy to compost. My mom and I bought a place together and she uses pallets for her bins. Four pallets per bin wired together with a PVC pipe with holes drilled in the sides so she can add water if it gets dry. The pipe is stuck in the middle of the pile. When the compost is ready, she just unwires a pallet.

Deborah, this is great information.  Why make it Members Only?  Share!

I've never even considered composting, but you do make it sound easy.  I'd be willing to read more....  :)

Hey Debbie - great for you! You're into disposing your kitchen waste  - I am so very pleased to hear that. Coffee grounds are especially great for the compost. Yes befor we know it will be gardening season again! Do you grow a vegetable garden?

02/13/2008 01:55 PM by Deborah Pearce - Living Spaces - Kelowna Home Staging & Interior Design (Living Spaces Interiors & Home Staging)

Hi Carole - I don't know the answers to that, except as Georgina noted above how her dad manages it.

I used to live on the edge of town in the woods, so I did have occassional racoons visit, I only know by their tracks in the snow - I never actually saw them.

I will be writing later more - but if you have garden space or plantings, kitchen waste can be dug directly into the ground for very successful and easy composting.

Hi Deborah, Yes, we do have a garden. It's not the prettiest sight with the green wire fencing, but a necessity with the deer. My youngest daughter grew plants from seed this year and we were inundated with produce. I'm looking forward to fresh tomatoes!

Georgina - it's great to hear that your dad has a pest-proof method of composting. Thanks for sharing that. It appears you have it going on!

Yes Mary - it has turned quite spring-like the past few days, I am very happy to boast! More to follow on the composting - watch for it soon!

Deborah,  I am sure we can all do better with the waste we produce, especially when we can put it to good use and be earth friendly.  It's time to dream of Spring and beautiful gardens!  I am looking forward to more of your posts about composting.  One of many reasons I subscribe to your blog.

02/13/2008 09:59 PM by Kathleen Vetrano Prince William & Fairfax Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty)

Hey Terry - an earth girl like you I thought for sure would be composting! You can put it into all your beds and those tomatos your trying to grow!.

02/14/2008 12:17 AM by Deborah Pearce - Living Spaces - Kelowna Home Staging & Interior Design (Living Spaces Interiors & Home Staging)

Jackie - terrific! I love to hear that people are composting and giving back to the earth - many people are very wisely using wooden pallets tp create compost bins now

Great to hear from you!

02/14/2008 12:29 PM by Deborah Pearce - Living Spaces - Kelowna Home Staging & Interior Design (Living Spaces Interiors & Home Staging)

Marlene - that's an excellent thought - I sort of wrestled with should I, or should I not post public - I believe I will now after you affirmative suggestion!

Composting is really easy, once you understand the basics requirements.

Thanks!

Great post, Deborah, more people should consider this - it is easy!

I compost everything possible and have for quite a few years. My gardens really like the stuff -but I need a crew of sturdy workers to get the stuff on my beds....any volunteers?

02/15/2008 04:43 PM by Bonnie Westbrook Grand Rapids MI Real Estate Marketing (Five Star Real Estate Ada MI)

Thanks Bonnie - so great to hear from a sistah compostah! I hear you on needing a crew - I worked the neighborhood Community Garden Compost alone last year - it was a huge job - hopefully I'll have help this year with people seeing how effectively it can be done.
