Conroe Yacht Club - not far from Spring TXFirst off I want to thank Active Rain and everyone who has contributed to its inception for providing this wonderful free blogging venue for us.  I know that I would not be to the point I am today in blogging if not for them.  I still have not figured out where they make their money from and how they are able to provide this to us for free but I'm so glad that they have and I do hope the advertising is helping them to make some money.

I actually started my first blog on Real Talk January 7th of last year.  My friend Mary Warrenwas blogging and encouraged me to begin.  I was feeling a little frustrated with it so I got on an email forum and someone mentioned Active Rain and the point system.  I did a Google search pulled them up and decided I liked their format a little better so started switching over.  I wrote a few post and everything seemed to be going fine but then I wrote one where several people commented.  The people who commented were Chris Tesch, Danny Smith and Bob Sloop; which I have become better acquainted with since then.  I was amazed that someone found my post.  I noticed that Chris was fairly close to me over in College Station and had lots of points so decided I would email her.  I started to email her through Active Rain and then was afraid that my email might be seen by the world so I got on her personal website and found her personal email.  Since then I have of course found out that it is perfectly safe to email someone directly from their blog. Below is the email that I sent her a year ago.

Hi Chris:  I am new to blogging and noticed you are here in Texas and have lots of points so I hopeConroe Yacht Club - January 2008 you don't mind if I ask you some questions.  You responded to a post I made last night on "What to bring to your real estate closing"?  I have had some very nice comments on the post.  My question to you is "how did you find the post"?  I didn't realize it was going out anywhere except on my blog.  I tried to find it myself but was unsuccessful.  The only forum I have signed up for is the "Newbie" forum but I didn't find it there.  Is there a way to make a post that doesn't go out to everyone?  I don't have a problem with that post going out to everyone but I want to be able to talk about my son stationed in Iraq and that would just mainly be information for my sphere.

Chris didn't just email me back she was kind enough to call me back.  So you were probably wondering; why I have pictures of our Yacht Club for my one year anniversary on Active Rain? This is where the pictures of the Yacht Club come in.  Several of our members have January birthdays (my husband is one of them) and every year the last Saturday in January we have a fish fry birthday party.  You actually can sail all year here but it is still chilly and I personally am a fair weather sailer so this is a chance for us to get together.  Last year during that party Chris called me and explained what Active Rain was all about.  As you can tell from the picture it is a casual Yacht Club so talking to her at the event was no big deal.  At that time she told me to start making at least 10 comments a day because I would get points for them.  She told me about Localism and how wonderful it was to promote your area.  We talked for quite some time and she just really made me feel welcome.  We had our yearly fish fry yesterday so I knew I had reached my one year anniversary.  I have been thinking about writing a post when I had my one year anniversary for quite some time and then read Rich Jacobson's post on Testimonials in the Rain so the timing was perfect.

I thought I would be able to say one year and 200 post and I am close but not quite there yet.  I am a bit of a A tortoise in Active Raintortoise when it comes to blogging.  It takes me so long to write a post that I rarely get more than 3 or 4 out a week but I do consistently put out 3 or 4 a week.  I also consistently make my 10 comments a day; probably a lot more.  My consistency has made me a tortoise with points; 3rd place here in Texas although I do see Jason Crouch coming up on my rear.  I have a bit of an addictive personality and I know that so I always try to keep everything in perspective.  God - Family - Career!  I have worked out of home based sales for 26 years now and one of my previous businesses got of sync with that God - Family - Career model so I always try to keep that in mind.  With Jason coming up on my rear my first inclination was oh my gosh I better post more but then I took a deep breath and said no it is not all about the points you need to just keep doing what you are doing.

One funny little thing that has happened this year is that I have noticed that I have started keeping track of some of life's little ups and downs by my Active Rain points.  Up until Active Rain I have always kept track of time by the age my children  but now that my children are young adults that is getting harder for me to do. Here is a case in point at 50,000 points our son was just getting back in the states from a tour in Iraq and then being stationed over in Germany.  I was so excited and wrote a post entitled 50,000 points and our son back in the United States; as I was sitting here waiting for his phone call.  Now you won't find a post when I hit 100,000 points as I had just found out he was going to be sent back for another tour of Iraq and the headline "100,000 points and our son going back to Iraq" just didn't cut it for me; but I still know that happened at my AR 100,000 point mark.  He took it like a man but as you can tell I took it like a Mom.  I have adjusted to it now so I am at least talking about it.  I guess I will see where those points take me this year as he is deployed again in March.

I would like to have been able to put a slideshow together (I am a carrot grabber and still do like those points) but I don't have any pictures of AR friends and I didn't think you wanted a whole slide show of our yacht club so maybe next year.  My technology skills are not yet to the pocast or video so again maybe next year.  I did get to meet Chris Tesch and Thesa Chambers this year.  Thesa came in to Dallas to visit family and we all met up and had a slumber party in Dallas.  I have no pictures to show you though as I brought my camera but then we were all so busy getting to know each other I forgot to take any pictures.  Hopefully as there are more of us blogging in Texas we can have some Texas Active Rain events and start getting to know each other.

I have especially liked the Localism part of Active Rain that has been my main impetus in the last year.  At this point I can't point to business that came directly from my blogging on Active Rain but what I do know is that it has helped me to keep my personal website on the first page of Google which I also know brings me business.  My first blogging year has been wonderful I have learned so much and met so many wonderful people from all over the country.  I now feel like I have a wonderful referral network as I am much more comfortable referring someone that I have got to know. Another benefit is all the knowledge that people are so willing to share plus if I run in to something where I am stuck I know that I can write a post about it and get help.

I am just now releasing my own personal blog added to the rear of my website and I would not have felt confident in doing that had I not had all the help from my experience with Active Rain.  SO THANK YOU ACTIVE RAIN!! Even though I now have my own Blog I don't plan on quitting Active Rain I will just have to learn how to be an effective tortoise in both.

Ross, I have TOTALLY enjoyed my year in Active Rain and it has taught me to stay consistent.  I guess we all remember who won the race with the tortoise and the hare so I don't mind being a tortoise.

Thesa, I have REALLY enjoyed getting to know you also.  We did a great slumber party even though we didn't record any of it digitally.

Marchel i think youare an excellent blogger, I will say a prayer for your son in Iraq and put him on the list of servicemen I pray for. Also thats a really nice new picture.

That would be great.  Hopefully, this Spring or Summer maybe we can plan a gettogether here in the Hill Country. What do you think?

Kimberly, it has been a GREAT experience and I hope to have many more years here also.

01/27/2008 08:35 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Hugh, Thanks and Thanks!!  I REALLY appreciate your prayers.  I have set up a prayer list for my son; if you would like to be on it send me an email and I will add your name.  I think it was what got me through his first tour.  This time I think he is going to be in a safer location than last time but him being there just doesn't give a Mom warm fuzzies.  He is an Intelligence Analyst so at least will not be out on the street but last time they were mortared almost the whole time they were there.

Marchel - I enjoyed your one-year anniversary post - congratulations!  With regard to the points, I honestly think it is more important to be #1 or 2 in the specific area you work (e.g. Austin or Spring) than the state.  I suppose being #1 or 2 in Texas provides more exposure overall, since everyone in the state sees your smiling face if they visit the home page for AR.  Perhaps you and I will occupy those spots someday soon.  Thanks for the mention!

01/27/2008 08:48 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Jason, I would agree with you.  I like the points but it is really more the community.  I have totally enjoyed my last year of blogging in the rain.  It is an ever growing experience.

Linda, I have enjoyed getting to know you also. We do need to plan a meeting somewhere at a middle location maybe.  I'm really not sure where that would be we are a BIG state but it looks like there are quite a few of us in Houston, Dallas and Austin so maybe something in between.

01/27/2008 09:53 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Missy, I have enjoyed getting to know you also.  How's your outside blog coming along?  I'm still in the very starting stages.  It is up but I'm trying to get my sidebar all straightened out now.  There is just so much to learn.  I was able to keep it consistent with the looks of my websites so I'm happy about that.

01/27/2008 09:55 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Gary, Thanks! That little harbor is a great place to hang out.  We keep our sail boat there and spend a lot of happy hours there.  It is wonderful to have a place like that to go and relax.

01/27/2008 09:58 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Kathy, Thanks!  You kind of inspired me to freshen up that photo to be quite honest.  I have known for a long time that I needed to but like I told you earlier I dislike having my picture taken.  We took our camera to the yacht club with us and shot away.  I love digital photography because it doesn't matter how many you take and believe me we took a bunch.

01/27/2008 10:02 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Marchel - What a nice story about your one year anniversary!  Many things have passed and much more to come.  You are the tops with me.

Marchel, Congrats to your first full year! I already feel as if I know you personally and I love the updated photo! We WILL get together this year! That's a promise. I'm sorry I missed that fish fry but my daughter got married yesterday. I acquired two new Grandchildren. I love them already. GBY, and I'll see you soon. Deb

Marchel - It has been a delight getting to know you, as you know I am a regular reader of your blog.  Yes in the last year we have learned so much and made friends along the way.  Best wishes with the outside blog.

01/28/2008 02:12 AM by Jennifer Fivelsdal, Rhinebeck NY (Keller Williams Realty)

Candy, the feeling is mutual!  We need to look in to that Excel class by the way.

Debra, Congrats on your daughter getting married.  I'm hopeful mine will settle down someday but only if they find the right person so I guess that is in their timing not mine.  Our fish fry was fun.  A few years ago it started out with about 12 of us; this year we probably had 30 to 40 people.  It has way grown but something fun to look forward to in the middle of the winter.  I was so glad we had the Saturday weather and not the Friday weather.

01/28/2008 08:17 AM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Jennifer, it has been a delight getting to know you too.  We have learned a lot in the last year meeting in the great blog experiment.  I guess we are going to be coming up on the one year anniversary of that in a few months also; time does fly.  I'm getting ready to work on that outside blog right now.  I'm trying to get a handle on the sidebar; so much to learn.

Hi Marchel,
Thanks for your testimony..I really enjoy hearing about how members have made their way through the Rain.  I've been reading your posts for a while now and have seen your growth.

Marchel, happy bloggybirthday. I'm so glad to have met you and to built our friendship on the 'rain.

CYNTHIA, Thanks!  I'm not thrilled with getting my picture taken either.  All I can say is Thank God for digital cameras.

KAREN,  It has been a great year hasn't it.  We made some really good friends doing our Great Blog Experiement; on top of all that we learned.  I wonder how Karen George is doing?

JOEY, I felt Active Rain needed a Big thank you for getting me to the place that I am in blogging.  I have enjoyed our friendship on the rain and have missed seeing you the last few months.

Well, it is a baby so it takes lots of time and attention. But, hey I  can find it on Google so that's a good thing. Send me a link when you get your's ready.

01/28/2008 02:56 PM by Missy Caulk-Ann Arbor- Realtor(R)- Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams-Ann Arbor)

Missy, that you can find it on Google is GREAT!!  I'm still trying to get my side bar figured out.  The gentleman who host my website put it up for me so hopefully he will be able to get to that soon.

01/28/2008 03:20 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Marchel I just want you to know how much I enjoyed your post.  It's so enjoyable to hear how someone else came into and has experienced AR.  I too feel like a tortoise with my points, and only post a blog a couple of times a month.  I never feel I really have much to share on expertise with technology, and most of my posts are about our community.  I love the exposure and have actually gotten a listing due top my presence, so I wrote a testimonial on it and the people who introduced me to AR.  Congratulations to you,  keep it up!

01/28/2008 06:17 PM by Linda Sanderson (Coldwell Banker Solano Pacific)

Marchel--Congrats on your one year anniversary! I see you had much more time to commemorate the event than I did...So glad blogging is bringing you business! Your story is wonderful...Love the new picture of you too!

Linda, if you scroll through my blog you will see that a good portion of my post are Localism post but that's really where the business comes from. I will go and check your testimonial out.

01/28/2008 07:38 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Teri, it reallly helped to have a yearly event that I could relate it to.  I guess that event will always be a reminder for me.

Thanks about the picture.  All I can say is Thank God for digital photography.  You would not believe all the goofy smiles I went through to find one that wasn't.

01/28/2008 10:27 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Congratulations on your one year anniversary.......

I had that date come and go.... and I did not even give it a second thought.....

I am eyeing my statictics for when I have either:

  • 3000 comments received on my blogs
  • 350 posts entered
  • 200,000 points accumulated

None of my peers can guess my age, since I take care of
myself so well..... I have heard estimates on my age as low
as 38....hehehehe!

I don't keep track of time by my age anymore.... it just does not matter now....

Again.....CONGRATULATIONS!!

WOOHOO for MARCHEL!!!!

01/29/2008 06:32 PM by Central / Orlando Florida real estate - Alexander Harb PSEM®, E-Agent® (Beach and Luxury Realty Inc.)

Alex, Thanks!!  The only reason the date stuck in my mind was the circumstances around it.  Mainly Chris calling while we were at the Yacht Club Birthday party.  It is funny how little things like that can stick in our mind.

I'm not even going to try and guess your age. It gets to the point where it doesn't matter, doesn't it?

01/29/2008 07:24 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Marchel: It's so nice to have you here. It's been wonderful and I do appreciate all your emails, encouragement and well wishes. You have a great new profile picture, btw. I wished I could say that my blogging was consistent. It hasnt been because of the little Boomer. Taking care of him and selling real estate is 2 full time jobs, not counting blogging - which can be another full-time job.

I really do want to be a consistent blogger, but there's no telling if this will remain a "wish".

01/30/2008 11:20 PM by Robert Monk Florida Real Estate (100% Realty, Inc.)

Loreena, I have enjoyed getting to know you also.  I have been in sales for 26 years now and yes my daughter is 26 so I have worked out of a home office all that time.  Back when my kids were little like yours I did not have the type of consistency I have now.  That is just part of being a Mom of a young child I think.  The beauty of it is that you get to work your business around your family.  I would not exchange it for anything in the world.

01/31/2008 02:36 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Robert, you are not kidding about that flying time.  It seems like yesterday that I was making my first post and already a year has gone by.

01/31/2008 02:38 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

Marchel, I'm so glad to have discovered you through this AR testimonial "contest".  I have not been AR as much as you, but it is really good to know that you can get so many points by consistently posting 3-4 posts a week.  I looked at your statistics and you actually have more points for making comments than for posting, so you are an avid reader of others' blogs.  I have another blog besides AR, but AR is the one that keeps me at the top of Page 1 of Google for my market area.

01/31/2008 11:12 PM by Gail Robinson, GRI, e-PRO - Black Rock Connecticut Real Estate (William Raveis Real Estate)

Gail, I love the social part of AR as I work TOTALLY out of a home office.  I don't even have another office to poke my head in now and then; which is my decision but AR sure helps me to not be so lonely.

What is the URL to your outside blog?  I would love to visit it.  I just added one this week so now I'm trying to figure that all out.

Marchel...

Awe...This is so sweet. Watching folks like Gail and myself find you as a result of an AR Request for Testimonials.

AR is like a virtual office...Water cooler included :)

P.S. You so have to read Suler's Cyber Space Psychology Study...It's awesome and very 'telling' :) '

TLW, Thanks for stopping by.  It was when I read the post you wrote on reciprocating that I really started developing relationships in Active Rain.  I did not see it the first go around it was when Missy Caulk resurrected it that I read it.  Up until then I was making my 10 comments a day but I was all over the place and you don't build relationships that way.  So Thanks for writing that post!!!!

I will check the Cyber Study out.

Ginger, it was fun getting to know Chris.  In some ways it feels like "Wow that was a fast year" and in other ways it feels like I have been blogging for a really long time.  I watch Brit H. almost every night so I probably am watching him when you are.  I really like the fact that he doesn't talk about the tabloid stuff that others do.

Ohoooooooooo...big hug my new friend!  Here's a little something for you.  Congratulations on a very successful one year on the Rain!  I really look forward to getting to know you better, you are just full of surprises.  I'm working with Justin Smith from AR about sending my blogs to my web site, maybe you can too and not have to write twice unless it's something you don't want on the other site?  It's all about sharing & caring :).  Would love to get a group of Texas AR agents together.  I have a lake house on Lake Limestone (that's between here and Dallas, and hour east of Waco), we could meet there, it sleeps 14, but could squeeze lots more in?  I also would like to talk to you about this group tomorrow if you have some time, give me a call on my cell or office.  Have you ever talked to Robert that started this group?  Hope you like your little flower, Liz

Liz, that is VERY CUTE.  I have enjoyed my first year in the rain and like I said blogging has just been a natural progression from my web site.  It is supposed to help SEO having a blog on the rear end of my webiste so we will see how that goes.

I am busy this morning but will give you a call this afternoon.

Liz - Great photo.  Doesn't Google penalize you for duplicating content word for word?  I had read that somewhere on here and the original author was angry because she got penalized as well although it was other people who were duplicating her content on their website.

CONGRATULATIONS Marchel, your post was very deserving of this first gold star on our new group.  It will also give the group (if there is anyone out there who doesn't know you :) a chance to get to know you better.  Looking forward to working with you and this group of fellow Texans.  Liz

Not sure about the google thing, I will have to ask Justin, but I'm sure he would not do anything to jeopardize my ranking, it has really moved up...page 1 on most.  L

I loved your post, Marchel.  I've been on AR for a few months, and I am really enjoying it.  What a good idea to post 10 comments a day and 3-4 blogs a week--I'll try it.  I have never blogged before the Rain and it sure is addictive.  What do you do to have it help you get your personal wesite more presence on the web?  If you wouldn't mind sharing, I would sure put it to good use and appreciate it.  Would love to meet you next time you are in the D/FW area.  Love you pictures.  I've never been to Spring but it looks nice.

CHRIS:  The 10 comments has totally worked for me and it now has become so easy for me to make the 10 comments.  I know that I now make many more than 10 comments a day but I'm not just in it for the points I just love the interaction.

As far as my website goes.  If you look at the bottom of all of my localism post you will see that I have options to click over to my websites.  This has been an incredible boost to my website and has helped me to get my site on the first page of Google for many terms.  You want to be sure that you put the terms you are working on in the title of your post.  If you have not checked Karen George's blog out you should.  She has some incredible tips for promoting your site.  She is not very active at the moment as she is dealing with cancer but go back through and read all of her past post. There is an incredible wealth of information.

Marchel, I found your post from a link that Lance Winslow added in the ThemThem Group. I'm glad he posted it, as I enjoying reading the success of my fellow Active Rain family. Thank you for sharing your one year venture on The Rain. It's an awesome site with awesome people!
