magnifying glassIdentity Theft is no laughing matter.  Those who have had their identity stolen will tell you that they paid dearly to have their good name restored.  Here are some things you can do to protect yourself from identity theft.

  • Remove your name from the marketing lists of the three primary credit bureaus by calling (888) 5OPT-OUT.
  • Be aware of what is on your credit report.  Obtain your report once or twice a year to be sure it is correct.
  • Do not carry your birth certificate, Social Security card, or passport in your purse or wallet.
  • Do not share your SSN when it is not necessary.
  • Request a copy of your Social Security Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement at least every three years to make sure the information in your file is correct.
  • Cancel any credit cards you do not use.
  • Never give out your login name or password to anyone.

A tough thing to block, and once it happens it sounds like a nightmare to fix. On the other hand, what if somebody really cool would steal my identity........
