I love meeting new people, but explaining what I do for a living is not easy. Small talk leads to probing questions like "What do you do?" That's a loaded question. My reply, "Search Engine Optimization" invokes a predictable pattern. Cocking their head sideways--like my doggie does when he hears a wierd noise--they ask  "What's that?", or pretend to already know. Inevitably our chat is diverted to something less mystical.

But wait just a minute! Just because something's confusing, doesn't mean it's worthless. Unfamiliar things are sometimes worth learning about. The comfort zone is a very dangerous place for a high achiever like you.

Comfort Schmumfort. Take calculated risk!

After all, email gave me the weebies when it first came out, and I'm sure great-grandma initially shrugged-off the washing machine. Even Rutherford Hayes, our Nation's 19th president said was not immune to underestimating new technology. Here's what he said in 1876 about Alexander Graham Bell's new telephone invention,

"An amazing invention -  but who would ever want to use one?"

You may even be convinced that web marketing is where it's at, but fear the costs associated with marketing your website. Contrary to popular belief, natural Search Engine Optimization is not only for the rich. It's actually the cheapest, most grass-roots kind of marketing fathomable. Think about it. Print advertising is EXPENSIVE compared to web marketing by a long shot. The web is so efficient, you can do so much more with so much little. I think of it like the invention of the wheel. The wheel makes human life easier in numerous ways. The same can be said for the web and Internet marketing. Get more done with less money, less time and less effort.

I'm not suggesting you go learn every aspect of SEO. Heavens no! How on earth would you have time to do your job? You don't need to know the technology of a cell phone to use it, do you? The same goes for SEO and other web marketing strategies. You just need to know how to use it and watch the leads pour in.

Why SEO?

Natural SEO is an inexpensive way to reach more people than you can imagine, all over the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and on holidays. Hello? Is anybody listening. SEO rocks! What better, cheaper, easier way is there to reach people who may be relocating to your area, to attract prospects, build brand awareness, garner publicity and stir up the buzz?

6 Comments on SEO Doesn't Have to Be Confusing

I'm definately interested in what you have to say. I believe in SEO but know little (maybe more than the dog) about it. We just launched our site last month and are starting to get the hits but it can always be better. When we have some more money to put into it I'll get in touch. Thx

Jenna, I'm with Cody. I know SEO is extremely important. Just need to make a few more bucks. I do enjoy reading your blog. You explain it in very simple terms.

Jenna - Great way to put it. SEO is the backbone of the internet. As a Realtor there is no point in being a "secret agent".

Jenna - I get that same puzzled reaction when I tell people that I write a blog and that I am learning alot about SEO along the way so that I can be found.

I submitted my name to the free web SEO.  I liked to see what they say.  Thanks.
