Which types of links will help your site the most - give you the most "juice?"

The reality is you need all kinds of links. Google wants natural link building. The way to make your link building natural is to have a mixture of the following types of links, using a variety of keywords:

  1. Authoritative directories with high PR - namely, Yahoo.com* ($299) and Business.com ($199).
  2. Links from lesser but still good directories - like JoeAnt.com.
  3. Links from free directories, especially those that are specific to your business niche.
  4. Paid links (a few) from highly relevant, high traffic sites - for traffic and link love.
  5. Links from blogs - yours, others, and Active Rain.
  6. Links in comments - worthwhile comments made in relevant blogs.
  7. Reciprocal links - a few from from relevant sites.
  8. Links that do not contain your top keywords, but instead related words.
  9. Content links from high ranking sites.
  10. Content links from low ranking sites.

This type of link building will do more for your site than targeted keyword links on high ranking sites only (which is so 'last week').

*Freebie: Go to the Yahoo Canada Directory, choose a category, and add your site. Don't click on the $299 button, but instead go for the free listing. Word on the 'net' is they don't have much of a backlog and your site will be added quickly.

Kay, dang it is hard to keep up with next week.  I am so HAPPY to have found your blog.

That is pretty cool, I just submited my outside blog and my website to yahoo.ca.  That will be cool if it is added quickly.  Is it acceptable to post an AR blog or will that not be accepted?

Steve - I don't know...I think of it as more for web sites. There are a lot of blog directories though, that you could add your AR blog to, for free.

Kay,

Thank-you for all the advice. One link I have is real.com. Do you have any more "free relevant links" for my real estate website? I am in Tennessee.

Hi Kay,

You state above that a few paid links are OK.  And yet in your post about the Google Page Rank update you state that sites are getting dinged for having paid links.  Are you suggesting that a few paid links won't get the attention of Google in a negative way but do not rely heavily on paid links as that will definitely get Google's attention?  Thanks for your insights.  W

Will - LOL I was waiting for someone to comment on that one!

Yes, Google will ding you for paid links - when they find them. I have found that paying for a few links on highly relevant, high traffic sites has excellent results. The key is to be subtle about it, and my recommendation is to contact the site owner directly, rather than go through a link broker. This is considered "gray hat" but trust me, it's still part of good SEO strategy. I chickened out and removed my links from my real estate postcards site when all the furor was going on, and it dropped from #2 to #8, and my PR still dropped.

Kay, I deleted my reciprocal page on my website.  It was a really pretty page; but I'm over it.

So you think it is a good idea to put the link to Active Rain on my home page?  It is worth 400 points here so that would be cool, especially since I have two websites.

01/23/2008 04:27 PM by Marchel Peterson Spring TX Real Estate E-Pro ABR (Results Realty)

My concern with a link to AR from my web site, is that it exposes my potential clients to other realtors in my area.  Any thoughts?

Thanks for the hint about the Canadian directory. That's great from an SEO perspective but also great considering the increased spending power of the Loonie.

good list. prior to submitting to any directories or other sites, its a good idea to check if they include the "no follow" tag on their links. Many classifieds do this and some webmasters are adding this into their sites so they don't get dinged for low ranking, lower quality outbound links.

01/25/2008 12:35 PM by Nate Alexander - The Long Beach Home Pro (First Team Real Estate)

Directories typically don't have no follow tags. But you do want to check for them prior to placing links on sites and in classifieds (like craigslist, which is no follow).

01/25/2008 01:42 PM by Kay Frenzer ~ Real Estate SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

I don't undestand- is a "no follow" a good thing or a bad thing?  And how do yo check if it is there or not?

01/25/2008 02:36 PM by Carol Lee Realtor ® Agoura, Oak Park, Westlake CA Homes (Coldwell Banker Residential)

Carol, a 'no follow' tag means you don't get link credit, so that's bad for you. You have to look at the source code to tell. That's why finding lists of 'do follow' blogs is good - you don't have to do that, or know how to do it.

01/25/2008 02:57 PM by Kay Frenzer ~ Real Estate SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Kay--

Thanks for the great ideas! I did not really fully-understand the relationship between the free links, paid links, etc. and website ranking.  This has helped me.

Kay,

I'm slowly getting better at this SEO and then you come up with another update and that's wonderful. Doing SEO seems to be a never-ending chore if you want to achieve results that long-lasting.

Hi Kay!  Thank you for the tip on Yahoo Canada.  We've been seeing a lot of Canadian buyers in our Arizona Active adult communities this last month so this was very timely.  I've submitted my website to them.  Thank again!

Esko - Honestly, it is never-ending. There will always be new web sites trying move up and move you down.

Dalp - You're welcome!

Kathy - Cool - a lot of Canadians like it here, I wasn't even thinking of that when I suggested the link.

Bill - You're welcome - the free link won't last, I'm sure.

02/07/2008 10:40 PM by Jess Arce (New Century Realty Group)

Joseph & Sheryl - You're welcome!

Jess -  I haven't added anything to the real estate section yet - can anyone tell Jess where they found it? I couldn't locate the category.

02/08/2008 04:05 PM by Kay Frenzer ~ Real Estate SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Be sure and visit Bill Gasset's blogs for links to the other free Yahoo Directories. He was nice enough to research those and post them on AR.

02/08/2008 04:07 PM by Kay Frenzer ~ Real Estate SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Jess - finally - here's where you need to go to submit your site:

 Directory > Regional > U.S. States > Your State > Real Estate

02/12/2008 03:04 PM by Kay Frenzer ~ Real Estate SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Thanks for the free info...lets see how long it takes to get into the directory.

Shaun - I'm not there yet, and it's been several weeks, but really, it's worth waiting months for a free Yahoo directory listing.
