Did you know that the fifth largest rain forest in the world is located in Alaska? The Tongass rain forest(17 million acres) is located in the vicinity of Ketchikan which gets average annual rain fall of 12.5 FEET! Here's the 2 story rain gauge that the downtown area has erected. We were there in Sept. and if you notice the salmon on the upper right edge of the gauge it's at 168" with 3.5 months still left in the year.
That's amazing! I would never have guessed that Alaska had a rain forest.
I enjoyed this post and I am a lover of rain....mental note made here and thank you
Greg, located just north of where I live in Seattle, I never new there's a place that got more rain than Seattle. LOL
Learn something new about Alaska every day. Terrific purchase, back in the day.
That is an incredible amount of rain. Alaska is truly an amazing State. Thanks for sharing today.
Hi Greg,
I have been to Ketichan three times but do not remember this gauge. Alaska is my favorite state. I went to the salmon hatchery on the outskirts of Ketchikan and it was fantastic. There were probably about 50 bears there within feet of us at all times. I follow the weather and I know this was a very harsh winter in Alaska. Thanks so much for sharing your chart...I will look for it when I go back. I enhoy reading anything about Alaska Greg.
Alaska is a state that I wish to explore since it is on West Coast and up there for all to enjoy
Thank you all for stopping by and commenting on this picture. If you ever get a chance to visit Alaska, do it, it truly is an amazing place & so huge.
Would have never guessed. So intereseting to find out about other parts of the country. Thanks for the FYI.
Greg, we need some of that rain in Northeast OH. Too many people are mowing hay....
Nan- I would have never guessed it either.
Pat & Steve- I'm in northern Indiana, so I know eactly what you mean.
I grew up in SE Alaska, Juneau specifically. :) It's all true too, it takes a lot of rain to support a rain forest.
I had no ideal wow this is great news and what a perfect place to take a vacation and relax the day away with all of that rain send some our way please we really need it
I did an Alaskan cruise in the late 90's and was able to visit that rain forest and Ketchikan. As I recall, Ketchikan is where there was quite a few stories of the oldest profession, and a few brothels.
Chris you so right. I just happen to have a photo of the infamous Red Onion Saloon. The most well known brothel of the gold rush era
Greg - Rain forests in Alaska is not something that I would have considered. That's a lot of rain.
Vacation time here we come and I bet its cool up there as well. Awesome thank you
Greg,
