Here's a little tip that just might save someone some time and headaches.

Let's say you are creating a new WordPress.org blog, and you are going to host it on GoDaddy.

Be aware that in the process you will be working with FOUR different sets of login names/passwords.  Keep a little notebook handy, and be sure to note which login name/password is which!

Take a look.  First you'll log in to GoDaddy with your primary GoDaddy account Login name and password.  OK. That's easy enough.

As you set up the hosting account on GoDaddy, you will need to create a different User Name and Password for that particular domain in the Hosting Control Center.  If you have multiple domains hosted on GoDaddy, each one requires a different User Name.

Then in order to use WordPress.org, you need to create a Database in the hosting account.  This actually involves nothing more than naming the Database, but in order to do that, the Database requires its own User Name and Password.

When you set up your FTP connection to upload the WordPress files to the GoDaddy host account, remember that the User Name and Password you want to plug into the FTP program is the Hosting Control Center set, not your primary GoDaddy set, and not the Database set.

When you complete the upload, and you run the WordPress.org installation, you will need to plug in the Database User Name and password.  Also remember that to complete this WP form, the Database name is the same as the User Name.

When the installation is finished, WordPress will display a new Username (Always "admin") and a randomly generated password to access your new blog.

Here's one more tip.  Login to the new WordPress blog immediately, go straight to the Users tab

And create another another user account for yourself with a Username and Password that you can actually remember

Be sure to click the drop down list at "Role" and set the role as "Administrator".

P.S.  Since, I've now created a number of WordPress.org blogs in the process of learning the ins and outs, here's a little spreadsheet I made up to keep track

P.S.S.  I just wish I had established a logical "naming convention" first, my hosting control usernames and my blog usernames are all over the map.  :-/

Cheryl, what you just described it why I had Brad Carroll set mine up and design it. You gave great instructions, but I just didn't want to learn all that. I like to blog and sell real estate, but to the more technological if they follow your tutorials they can do it.

Missy -- This post isn't much of a tutorial, just an illustrated tip showing that you gotta keep track of which password is which.  :-)

This may be a dumb question, but I know you can just set up a blog on Wordpress without having to go through GoDaddy.  So what is the purpose of being hosted by GoDaddy?  I'm sure there is a great reason, and I'm new to this and don't have a clue.

Cheryl, I as well wonder about Hosting and the reason behind hosting elsewhere? I also wonder what is the advantages and dis-advantages over a Wordpress . Com blog vs a Wordpress . Org blog. Not in Wordpress's description but in yours.

Chelle...  You can set up a blog on WordPress.COM  without going to all the extra effort.

Doing your own installation of WordPress.ORG on your own host (in this example, GoDaddy) just gives you much more control over customization, and allows you to add extra stuff.

Here's the official WordPress explanation:  http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/wordpresscom-vs-wordpressorg/

Thanks Cheryl,

The thing that I did not care about in the . Com version when I first signed up was that I had to stay with the povided banners.

But recently ( I don't know when) Wordpress dot com brought in a custom banner upload. I imediately changed mine to the one I currently have.

I am sure there are a number of other great reasons to use a dot org over the dot com.

Will you get any better results through the search engines if you use a dot Org over a Dot Com?

Sounds like there are better ways to go than GoDaddy hosting. What about BlueHost? Any experience with them?

01/13/2008 02:13 PM by Sharon Simms St Pete Florida CRS CIPS CLHMS (RE/MAX Metro)

Sharon, any host that offers Fantastico installation does make it simpler.  Blue Host does.  I don't have an account there.  I do have accounts at Web Hosting Buzz and Mid Phase, both of which offer Fantastico, and yes, I've installed WordPress now at both of these ... with hardly a thought!  See http://activerain.com/blogsview/323051/WordPress-org-One-Click

About my only complaint is Fantastico doesn't update the version as quickly as they could, and I ended up doing a mnual installation to update anyway.

I've been playing with the GoDaddy installations just to be able to say I did it.  :-)

Including random thoughts on life, art, business, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate.

What is a CAT BLOG?

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary."

Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
