The national and local Seattle media have really had a huge hand in how well houses are selling in my opinion. Creating a sense of uncertainty at every opportunity when this is when buyers should be out there scooping up some deals with the pick of the inventory is terrible! What's worse is seeing how some of the local real estate agents buy into the hype. Being realistic is important, but how can you possibly sell a house if you have no enthusiasm?
Luckily NAR is stepping in and beginning January 14th, launching a national media campaign; The 2008 Public Awareness Campaign to put the truth out there because every market is different and only your REALTOR (not the media) is qualified to tell you about your market! (Don't even get me started on the R**F*N "scientist" method!!!)
NAR's 2008 Public Awareness Campaign will air from January through November on major networks and television events with at least 10,000 showings on both TV and radio. Your local REALTOR association might also have marketing materials for you to go along with the campaign. I am going to support this campaign as much as possible to try to balance the information that consumers are getting so that they might want to make their own decisions rather than rely on fear created by the media.
If you think you might be interested in relocating to Seattle Suburb real estate, make sure and have a FULL SERVICE experienced Realtor help you find the community that is best for you!

I agree with what you say abou the media scaring potential buyers with their gloom and doom forecasts. In the DC area, there are absolutely fantastic deals to be had, but many first-time buyers are afraid because of the stories of foreclosures, the economy and the declining real estate market. Most of the stats in these national media articles are not from our area. Those that are should be used as good learning tools.
It's sad that the media is really falling short on educating these buyers about what they can do to be safe. Homeownership, for those who buy within their means is one ofthe best investment options for the long term homeowner.
