I don't believe in New Years Resolutions.  They always end up as broken promises a couple of months down the2008 Coming Soon road.  Instead I've tried to keep a positive mindset by setting goals each year and evaluating the goals at the end of each year.   Through trial and error I've found that there are techniques that will increase the chance of achieving ones goals.

I don't know about you but I know that I have to set short and long-term goals in order to achieve success.  Clear goals are essential for a successful career and happy family life.  I'm not the only one.  All successful people do it.  Ok, so I've waited until the very last minute to get going on my goals for next year.  My bad but I'm getting there.

In thinking about my goals for 2008 I keep coming back to a few overall keys to success that I'd like to share with you as I close down the books for 2007 and get ready to gear up for my 2008 Goals:

  1. Goals need to be clear, concise, quantified, and achievable.
    • For example, if I decide to set business growth as a goal I would then take it a step further to say that I want to grow my business by $5M in Sales by year-end.  Then I'd break it down even further to say how many additional houses I would need to sell and also come up with a plan to market, sell, and list those homes.  Our market has slowed a little so I also have to be realistic about setting expectations for the upcoming year.
  2. Goals are not really goals unless they are in writing.
    • Did you know that the single act of writing your goals down increases the chances of achieving them by 1,000%? Yes, that's right! You can increase your chances of reaching your goals by 10 times just by writing them down.
    • I find that by writing down my goals they gain power.  They become a part of me. When I write down my goals it's like drawing up a contract with myself. It forces me to commit myself to my goals.
  3. Goals should be imprinted in your conscious mind.
    • The stronger my goals are impressed in my subconscious mind, the more I try to achieve them and the better chances I have of accomplishing them.
    • The more often that I visit my goals the more likely I am to achieve them.  Goals were not meant to be visited at the beginning of the year and then pulled out at the end of the year.  I keep my goals close at hand and visit them regularly to make sure I'm on track.

So, what are your plans for 2008?  Have you written your goals down for the upcoming year?  What are some of the goals that you have in store for the new year?

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful goal setting day!

Tracy - Goals are certainly important. I am going to strive to get even better results form AR than I already have. I have been spending a lot of time over the holidays really working on website and blog optimization...hopefully it pays off down the road.

Hi Tracy,

This is a wonderful goal tutorial...you've summed it up perfectly.  I've always noticed that by writing goals down, they get entrenched into our subconscious mind and from there have a life of their own.

Warmest happy new year wishes to you and your loved ones,

Jo

Tracy, as a non-goal setting person, I am always impressed by those who do set goals and achieve them. I suppose I mentally have clear cut goals, but I'm not organized about writing them down. I do make lists of things to do, but I think that's different.

As someone else said, great tutorial for goal setting.

Great use of space, bold, and photos. Happy New Year Tracy.

I agree about putting it in writing. Once it is in stone then you are held up to that standard or prediction. It is your word you are giving that you will do and God will be there for you to help you. Good luck with your goals. I will be here to back you up and believe that they to can come true.

You are better off in numbers of believing with you.

Tracy, I attended a class a few years ago, and part of the class was on goal setting. I had forgotten about writing them down. Thanks for the memory jog. I need to work on this area. Hey, look I've already got one! Happy New Year!!

Tracy, what a timely post!  I totally agree with the scrap the New Year resolution stuff.  It doesn't work.  Written goals do.  Good stuff here!

Hi Tracy,

Good stuff!  My goal usually starts with one (1) 1 more call, 1 new agent to talk with, 1 sale per month, 1 sale per week, 1 less coffee per day, 1.... well you get the idea.  One is easy for me to do...and it sure beats doing nothing, all I need do is write down all the ones.  Good luck with your goals, it looks like you will accomplish them!

Tracy, You are right on track with this tutorial. This week I will spend time evaluating what i did right and what I could have done better. My goals are simple: increase business and referrals, focus on ROI and SEO.

Happy New Year!

TRACY:  I totally agree with you. Most of the really successful people I know actually keep their goals somewhere they can read them daily. I've never been quite that diligent...but it seems to work. Happy New Year, my friend!! GBU!

Tracy - you hit the nail on the head when you posted this... can I print it and save it???   I, too, don't believe in New Years resolution, but goal setting as well... your post rejuvenated that goal setting fire in me...

Thank you thank you thank you... and good luck in 2008!

Hi Tracy, it does take more than making a wish list for goals.  I wonder how many resolutions are made each year and within a few short weeks are already forgotten, not to mention broken.  Nice post Tracy.

Tracy,

Great advice!  I haven't really set any resolutions goals yet.... I keep putting it off.  I think I'll make tonight the night and actually write them down.

Thanks for the kick in the pants.

Tacy- Your post is right on the money! You must write your goals down and have a plan to reach them. I feel sorry for those that never set goals because they could be accomplishing so much more, in fact, you are setting goals even when you do not, because you are writing your own story. Reach for all you can be! Katerina

Definitly WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS...what is our motivation if we dont have our goals written down?

As a couselor in my previous career I know how important it is to set goals and as you said to keep them handy. I have had such success on this in the past. Although last year my goals were not achieved I know in the long run its the right choice.

Tracy.... I am not sure why I didn't comment the first time around, considering that this blog is what made me add a goals section in this blog : -- A Collection of 2007 Active Rain Year in Reviews & Predictions --

In any case, you did a great job here in regards to not only sharing with us how to establish goals, but goals that are clear and both long term and short term. Again, great job here.
