It is Christmas Eve and hopefully all the plans are in place for an enjoyable celebration with family and loved ones. With all the festivities and excitement going on I ask that we all take a moment and remember those who will not be home with their families.

As a former Navy officer I can remember the Christmas times I was away from home. That first one was the most difficult. Let's see..Christmas in Spain, Christmas in Greece, Christmas in South Korea, three in Japan, Christmas in Tunisia (north Africa...sail to the Rock of Gibraltar and hang a right), Christmas at sea on the USS Canisteo and a few others. I can't deny I have some nice memories from these experiences although at the time I preferred to be home.

So let's remember all those members serving our country as they are away from home and, some, in harm's way.

Let's also not forget those who will be serving their communities this holiday. The police officers (close to home as my son the "cop" will be working in Palm Beach County, Florida), the firefighters and paramedics, the dispatcher who answers that 9-1-1 call, the doctors, nurses and other health-care professionals. The clerks at that local convenience store who are available for that last minute battery purchase or gas for that trip to grandma's house. Gotta get that fill up on pump three! This not an all inclusive list, for sure. There are many others who will be working and not able to be with family and loved ones.

Most of us in the real estate related profession do have the luxury of setting our hours and scheduling our holiday time - just one of the rewards of the profession. For those who are serving us, let's remember them in our thoughts and prayers.

Please keep your holiday safe and enjoyable and remember the reason for the season - Christmas.

Sorry, no big photos or inspiring songs here. I thought about singing a Christmas Carol or two but I will leave that for those with talent!

Have a Merry Christmas!

Gary,

I remember the days when I could not be home for christmas. I was in the Air Force and overseas. I truely appreciate the sacrifice our troops are going through so we can have our freedom.

Thanks for the reminder. But for me I can't forget as I've been there and done that. So has my son who was in Bagdad two Christmas' ago.

Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours, Gary!

I am fortunate to be spending the last two Christmas days with my son who came back home from serving with the US Navy on the Kitty Hawk. The day the war started was his birthday...and he was in the Persian Gulf.

Thank you to all who are serving our country and a very Merry Christmas to all!

Excellent post Gary. So many people forget why we have the freedom to celebrate in the way that we do. Your timely reminder is certainly well received by me.

All correct. We ,at times forget those people. We assume that they will always be there when we need them.

Hi Gary, I never forget those who are serving...I spent Christmas day in a swamp up to my neck in water during my tour in Vietnam.  I can understand being away from home and the uncertainty of being in a war zone.  Nice post Gary.

Gary - Those Christmas days away from home - nice memory, huh? Anyone who has been away can appreciate or at least should appreciate the sacrifices of the ones who serve us now. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you for your comment.  I'm sure glad home is where the heart is.  And I praise the Lord for "Christ living in our hearts."  May 2008 bring you blessing that reach to heaven.  Lu

Gary, Merry belated Christmas!  Just today I watched on TV as they showed the faces, names, ages and hometowns of the latest casualties of the war.  Some of them were mere babies.  They should have been home trying to sneak a kiss from a pretty girl at the movies.  Instead they were giving up their lives for us.  I have always had a soft spot in my heart for those who serve so unselfishly, all our civil servants!  Please thank your son for me Gary.  I always say a prayer when I pass an ambulance, squad car, fire engine etc.  My prayer is always the same "to get there in time to help and get home safely."
