You have the bungies tight, the dog is sleeping, kids are not fighting and the station wagon is pointing to Maine.  When you get here, where do you go for one stop shopping for what to do and where and when? Before hitting the open road, spend some time on line. The  Maine.gov site is one of the country's best!  One question that comes up alot that is not an easy few word answer is "What's Maine weather like?"  Kinda like "What's a diamond worth?" Well..for starters Maine's a big state with sixteen counties.  On the coast you could have freezing rain due to ocean affect.  In Northern and Western areas, just dry fluffy snow in winter...and more snow levels in the higher elevations where the ski areas are.  Winter's average temperature is 19 degrees...not 300 degrees below zero. The coldest temperatures are where the highest mountains are, in the northern interior sections like  Mt Katahdin's location.  Katahdin is Maine's highest mountain and just shy of mile high!       Maine Snow Skiiers Enjoying Ski Areas This Year!Snowiest month in Maine is January according to the records. Average summer temperature in 70's and high humidity is rare so 90 and into the 100's is very very rare. No twisters, tornados and earthquakes are pretty rare.  Roughly 15 thunderstorms a year. Amount of yearly precipitation is  40 to 46 inches. Here is northern maine we could have 30 days a year where we receive more than an inch of daily snow. Other wise total snowfall for Aroostook and northern Penobscot/Washington counties is approximately 90-110 inches of white stuff. Along the coast between 50-70 is the inch range of yearly snowfall.  The southern interior sections get roughly 90-110 depending on the years. In northern Maine the mjore intense snow storms happen when there is wind out of the north east or north west.  Canceled school is not common and the roads / towns are well cleared with the right equipment and operators to not disrupt day to day activities to any great degree. Maine's weather today is here!

You get a lot of snow up there in Maine!  Makes winter sports a must or you go stir crazy! We get snow but not as much as you do.
