Making da monezMissy has a great article on the benefits of Adwords. I haven't heard many success stories like hers. I have only heard of very low conversion ratios. I am eager to hear your success stories on the use of Adwords.

But that is not the real reason I posted. I have been tinkering with the idea of monetizing my sites with Adsense. The reason I have been tinkering, is because of this girl. You can place little nuggets on your website and Google will place a few relevant ads on your website.  She tapped into something and made millions...oh did I mention she did this at age 14.  My son has some catching up to do.

It seems pretty amazing how it works. It grabs a few words off your post and places ads in there by the people that are paying for Adwords. So I am sure if I was to mention a few times in this post Ann Arbor Real Estate and a few other words related to real estate and Ann Arbor, Missy's advertisement would show up. As a demonstration, I could put Adsense in my profile to the right like Brad Andersohn and her ad would appear there. But I wouldn't do that to Missy. She would be paying for a lot of clicks and definitely not get any returns on her invoice.

I have read that people have mixed feeling about the Adsense program, because your competitors can advertise on your website. I have mixed feelings about that too...first, the websurfer found my site and I didn't have enough content to keep them there and they moved on, so why not get paid for that? second, I am sure the websurfer will find me again and they'll be back. (I write a lot of SEO magic into my blogs.) At that point, I either have them or they really don't like what I have to say and would move on anyways. You do have the ability to filter out local competitors in order to keep them from showing up. Third, does it cheapen the website...jury still out on that.

I look at this way, monetize on the ones that you keep or monetize on the ones you lose.

The other question that keeps coming up, does the ads cheapen your site? I have a couple set up on a few different sites.

Focus On Frederick.com - Light to moderate

FrederickHomeAuction.com - Heavy

Bobs Brain Dump.com - Light

Take a look at all of them. Did you notice how the ad content change with the post content? There are a couple referral sites on there too. You can make money off of recommending products too. I have just started with Adsense and don't have a track record yet. I plan on leaving the sites as is for about a month or two and monitoring the results.

My main site is Focus On Frederick.com - tell me if you think it's too much. I don't want to really jeopardize it for a few bucks.

Just like Real Estate referrals, you can monetize through referral of certain products. I have been using Firefox a lot lately. It has tools available for working with CSS sheets and editing. This has been my next task...to understand CSS. So on the bottom left of my Focusonfrederick.com site you will see a referral link to entice people to install it on their computer.

Below you can see some examples of referral links. You are compensated (in one way or another) when someone uses the product through the link.

21 Comments on Adsense vs Adwords - Pay vs Receive

I used AdWords for a couple of years until I got sufficient organic SERP.

I used AdSense for a week until I saw an ad for Long & Foster on the page.

LOL...Lenn, nobody beats you at the organic game

Adsense has away to shut off certain ads from appearing.  With as much traffic as you get, you could probably at a minimum, buy a new car...did you see the video of that little girl?

Bob, took me awhile to comment because I wanted to look at your sites. Thanks for the Google juice, I actually contacted Brad last week about the ADWords thing. I have seen it on others blogs here. You know I think if you have enough subscribers you could probably make some money. Brad said I was free to click on his and he would make money. Let me know how it goes, I think the verdict is out for me, I just don't know.

It doesnt' look bad, the only thing that looks bad on your blog is the brain. YUK. I am having Brad Caroll build my wordpress.org blog. Yea, I know I could have done it myself if I had wanted to take the time but I didn't. Should be ready this week sometime. Thanks for not costing me money.

My daughter wants to major in graphics, and is off next week to N.Y to visit the ad agencies with her Markeing class, I will show her the video. That was amazing. Another one like Bill Gates who didn't finish college, opps high school.

The teen girl who makes lots of money runs an online business, which like any business (IE Real Estate) takes time, effort and investment. I don't think that having ads on your real estate website is a good idea. You will send your visitors to another site or at least increase the chances of that.  To make money online (it is possible) one must plan a separate business and work hard on it.

11/10/2007 06:54 PM by Raj Dhaliwal (MyAbbotsford.Com) (Landmark Realty Corp.)

Missy, the adsense pays you for positioning ads on your site and someone clicks on them.  The referrals pay out when someone purchases through your link.  Brad will make you an outstanding blog I am sure...The girl captured a great idea and capitalized on it.  There are more out there...just have to find it.

Jay...blatant...I have no idea what you're talking about.

Raj, I think they can be integrated to work together somehow with out cheapening it. It's not going to replace your income in small amounts.  That girl now has 2.5 million hits a month on her website.  She offered a free service and the ads paid for itself.   Definitely can be done as a separate business. Just need to find the right niche and write about it with some great SEO built into it.

Oh, and when I clicked "because of this girl" I almost expected the Dr. Pepper blog.

Good post.  I brought my daughters in to watch the video - what a success story!  I do adwords but not adsense.  The adsense doesn't make sense for me as I don't want ads from other companies showing up on my site and that is probably what would happen.

11/10/2007 07:12 PM by David & Lisa Webber, www.webberteam.com (RE/MAX Vision)

Bob:  I signed up for Adsense quite a while back, right now there is a balance of $97.00 sitting in my account.  However Google won't release it, and won't run further ads (only the public service thingy), until I complete a W-9, and hand over my tax ID number.  I know I'm being an a$$, but it just irks the h#ll out of me to have to keep giving everyone my ID info.

It doesn't bother me to have ads on my site, leading away.  If my site interests the prospect enough, they will stay there, or they will use their back button and return.  If they aren't interested enough to use their browser's back button, they probably aren't interested enough to become clients, so I may as well make the 2 or 3 cents that I earn when they follow an adsense link.

Chris, she probably makes a few bucks too.  She has quite a following.

David & Lisa, basic entrepreneurship...make money on your hobby!!!

Cheryl, that's my thought too...If don't keep them, might as well let them pay for their time on my site.  It really becomes a numbers game.  If you write good material, they will return...if you don't appeal to them they are going to move on anyways.

Thanks Bob.  I am interested to see the responses and feedback.  I have been thinking about this a lot lately myself.

Hmmmm, this sounds a little intriguing........I may just have to check this out.  If there's a way to block competitor's from being one of the ads on your site, it could turn into something good, I would think.

Good for that teenager!!

Firstly, I apologize, because maybe I'm a fuddy duddy.  I know that it sometimes helps to have links on your front page.  I just can't do that nevermind this.  I don't think it is wrong, but won't deny that I think that it cheapens a site somewhat.  I do have a links page, but it is just not obvious.  I may have to reconsider since I'm in the long process of redoing my site.  Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the insight, I use Ad words, but never heard of ad sense.  I am learning a lot which is great!

11/10/2007 10:54 PM by Christine McInerney (Southland GMAC Real Estate)

David, I will come back in a couple months with my findings.

Ann, You can't click on the ad on your site to find out...its against the adsense policy.  But it's not hard to figure out what the site address is.

Marc, I think some..."some" links add value, but I am trying to figure out where to draw the line.  I personally don't like a very busy sight with all the blinking things, but if it works, then I am all for it.

Christine, I'm glad I could help.

Hi Bob-

IMHO - I can't stand those ads!

But, if it was a way to actually make some real $, I could change my mind.....

Neal, now that you mentioned it...I am sure this post will come up on someones search for sex and money.

Marc, That fourteen yr old made some serious coin.  I would be interested to see how much people are making on here with Google Adsense.  I have seen them a few places.

You don't need to put all your eggs in one basket. Think multiple streams of income. On this site I actually have  different streams of income.

Great Post!
