If you're wondering just how Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace, among other social networks, can actually benefit your business, below is an interesting presentation from Common Craft that explains it in plain English and simple diagrams.
This is also an excellent example of viral marketing.

Kay,
Thanks for posting this video... I think it's great! I've been trying to explain to all my "old" real estate buddies why I've developed this interest in blogging, and why I have FACEBOOK and MYSPACE sites (I have both business and a personal sites). They think I'm too old for all of this and that it's a waste of time. I feel a bit defensive about it, but now I can email them the link to your post here for an explanation. It's so well presented, and certainly better than I could have explained it. Now I need to check out LinkedIn. Do you have sites on all of these?
I use these site for my online reputation. I've never recieved a client directly from a social network, but many clients have "googled" me and found my pages making me appear to be quite savy!
Jan - It's hard to explain all this to people who "just don't get it." My favorite is how to explain SEO to a construction worker, but it's a little naughty for AR. I don't think we're ever too old to learn new things! I have profiles on all the sites, but the MySpace page is basically a name holder - which everyone should have on all the social sites, even if they don't want to put anything else up yet.
Ben - Very good idea. All these show up on Google, and also provide links to your site.
