Facebook
Facebook is a social media site that is growing exponentially. It's sort of like MySpace for adults, but more. To quote the site itself:

Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you.

If you've been wondering exactly what social media is here is a partial definition found on Wikipedia:

Social media uses the “wisdom of crowds” to connect information in a collaborative manner. Social media can take many different forms, including Internet forums, message boards, weblogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures, and video. Technologies such as blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, group creation, and voice over IP, to name a few.

Facebook was originally started for Harvard students, and was limited to those with a Harvard.edu email. It was expanded to other Ivy league universities, and a year ago was opened to the public.

FaceBook is doubling every 6 months, gaining 200,000 users per day, with a current userbase of 49 million. The sixth-most trafficked site in the US, it's the #1 photo-sharing app on the web.

The fastest growing group is 25 and up, with an increasing number of baby boomers. Facebook is is a great place for boomers "to strut their stuff, their business and their blogs."

I have never got into MySpace and never thought about getting into facebook, but the other day my sister mentinoed that she found some of my friends from my childhood...

and I got in... Oh WOW.. from my elementary school friends to college friends, everyone is in the facebook.  I just like the fact that i was able to get in touch with those whom i lost connection with, however the rest of the options in that site is a waste of time  :)

I am on facebook - and am a gmail user - facebook linked my contacts from gmail. I made contact with people who randomly emailed me about a property. So now these random prospects can put a face and personality to a REALTOR.

No sales yet but how does a little more exposure hurt?

Kay, In your opinion, what's the best way to leverage your FB presence?  Obviously as much contact with as many people is the answer to any such question.  But, given the limited time available to build and maintain an active presence in AR, FB, WannaNetwork, LinkedIn, and several others (not to mention blogging, tweaking websites, etc.), it seems you have to set goals for each or risk wasting time and just drifting aimlessly about without any real benefit.

The two objectives in AR are clear . . . blogging for leads, and networking for support and referrals, but FaceBook to me is a little less obvious.

Do you think it's better to focus on making contact with school / college / work "friends" in the hope that something will evolve trying to network with other agents to build referrals, or just be a passive "presence" so that you can be stumbled upon by the curious?  Which has worked for you (and an others out there reading this) as a way to build your business?

Kay,

Follow up to the above . . . I just saw your post on how social networking benefits our business. so will consider that for answers to the above . . . Thanks!

Tom and Debbie - Thanks for your comments.

Mehmet - I agree, a lot of things on Facebook are juvenile, but you will be seeing some changes.

Rebecca - You are using Facebook to your advantage, and that's great.

Trent - Facebook just implemented Business Pages, so you definitely want to set something up for your business. That's something I need to do, too. At this point I think it's important to at least be a presence on Facebook. I think Rebecca has the right idea about how to use Facebook without wasting a lot of time.

The agency I work for, Terralever, just put on a "Facebook Developer Garage" in Phoenix - if you go to my SEO Diva blog you can read about some of the things that are happening. Facebook is growing so rapidly all over the world that it's going to be a force of some kind. Developers are madly busy coming up with new applications, and they are going to be useful and sophisticated. It's definitely to your advantage to keep an eye on Facebook.
