Check out this awesome directory submission tool! I am so excited to have discovered the Directory Submission Manager and am totally impressed with it! (No affiliation.)

Not only is it a helpful tool to keep track of your progress when submitting to directories, it contains the following information for every directory:

  • Page Rank
  • Importance Rank
  • Saturation
  • Inbound Links
  • Type - Free or Paid
  • Price
  • Category
  • Notes

I have quite a bit of experience with directories, and it appears to be totally on-target with its rankings and information.

Directory submissions are key to your Google backlinking strategy, so jump on this! Many are free, but it can get expensive, especially at first when submitting to the most important directories (Yahoo at $299). Do a few at a time when you can - that is the best way to do link building anyway, slow and steady.

good stuff! felt like it was throwing darts in the dark not knowing when things would happen and the status of submissions.

Nate - even at my day job I have a hard time keeping track of submissions, so this tool is a help to me there, too. They also list some directories that I have missed in the past.

Hi Kay,

I'd like to submit my site to the Yahoo Directory but I'm a bit concerned about a few things I've read recently.  First of all, my site is about three years old and back then we used "Links" pages for external links.  I've heard that that's a real no-no with Yahoo, Google, et al.  Also, about a year ago I created a typepad blog where I posted newspaper articles verbatim (it made sense at the time).  Needless to say fewer and fewer of the pages on that site are indexed and I'm sure the link juice I was getting is now very diluted.  Anyway, I'm afraid that both of these practices would now be considered black hat and could cause me trouble if I were to submit my site for submission with Yahoo Directory.  Am I right to be concerned and if so is there a way to clean this up so that I can submit later?  Or am I over reacting.  Thanks for your opinion.  W

Will, you have nothing to worry about. Everyone had links pages - now they're just ignored. And newspaper articles are reprinted all over the Internet. Nothing you are doing is black hat. I recommend you submit your site to the Yahoo directory, sit back and look forward to the added cache it will give your site.

Why is there so little information on whether paying Yahoo for their directory search is worth it or not?

It's just an accepted fact that the Yahoo directory is extremely helpful to link building. I personally can't afford to list my sites in it, but if you have the money it's highly recommended - all my clients go in there.

If you can't afford it, Best of the Web is great, and I really like JoeAnt.com too.
