Keeping a Realtor interested is challenging in many areas of their lives. Attending Open Houses, Seminars and Training Sessions. With my background being in Corporate Training, I am often faced with the task of keeping Agents interested in various training topics. The challenges are that there is usually a great age span of the Agents. This matters when it comes to Training as the frame of reference changes with adult learning based on their life experiences. A 20something agent will not only learn differently than a 50something but the examples that are used in training have to span all age groups.
I recently posted a Blog at http://www.lifeasanagent.com/jim-hirschhorn/you-can-teach-an-old-realtor-new-tricks/show/ which discussed the method of training using the TELL-SHOW-DO-REVIEW technique. This has worked well when teaching agents but there is much more that needs addressed. Everything from the environment, the design of the training location, the size of the class and of course the topic make all the difference.
When co-workers invite you out to happy hour, you may not feel like going but if they drag you out, you usually end up being happy that you went. Much like a successful blog, the title is what draws them in. The training topic has to be current, something they can use and also hold their interest during their attendance.
Ice Breakers are a great way to set the tone. I have been to some meetings where they get you going right from the very beginning by making you laugh, making you think or wowing you with amazing facts. All of these serve to build an early bond with the participants.
I would love to hear about your scary training sessions as well as the ones that made a lasting impact!
Did you say happy hour? I get my best training during happy hour. The bar is a great place to teach. Especially when you have two for one specials.
