podcastI had been trying to insert a podcast in our wordpress blogs New Hampshire Real Estate Blog for a while now with no success. Until I found Mediacaster over at Semiologic's blog. I read through the directions and decided to download the plugin and activate it to see if it would work. I was surprised at how easy it was to use. I had tried a couple of others with no luck.

You will need a few things to start your podcast. One thing you should get is a halfway decent microphone. I have the Logitech headsetLogitech clear chat comfort headset. I purchased this at Staples and it was 39.98 but I had a coupon worth $ 9.00 so I took advantage of it. The most important feature in a microphone you will need is a noise-canceling microphone which filters out unwanted background noise. A must have....

The other thing you will need is a way to get your files up to your blog. Hopefully by now you know how to "ftp" File Transfer Protocol your files. I use a free program called Filezilla to upload all my themes and plugins.

Now that you have these two things you will also need to download software to record your podcast on and one that was recommended to me was Audacity. Once you have downloaded Audacity you will need to download the file that allows you to make the podcast an mp3 file. It is a .dll file called LAME MP3 encoder lame_enc.dll. Creating mp3 files is the easier and more common of files to work with.

Hopefully you already know how to save and retrieve files that you have downloaded. In this video towards the end I may not have said the words where to download your files too. You just need to know where you store your files so that you can get them to upload to your server.

Here is a video on how I was able to install and get the podcast to work. Hopefully it will be easy for you too.

I am SOOOOO glad to hear that you're working out all the bugs on Podcasting. Mark and I plan to start adding some to SBB in the near future. Now I know who I can call.....

That's pretty funny as I always turn to Mark for Wordpress advice. He gave me some words of wisdom in an email and that gave me the confidence to move forward in my learning of Wordpress and other technical capabilities out there. Hopefully I will be able o return the favor to you and Mark.

Thanks again Rich.

Hey Jay - if I used Wordpress, you'd be my man for sure!!  In the technical sense, of course!  ;-)

You are so cool about sharing all this techie stuff with us.  I know many benefit from it, so keep on sharing!

We are using the podPress Plugin for Wordpress to post audio podcasts on iTunes via our blog site (www.TheSeattleSpecialist.com) and it works pretty well once set up. You can find us on iTunes at:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=261075950

One issue we are having is only the last three episodes show up in iTunes and the others seem to drop off of for some unknown reason. Anybody run into this?

Bill, good luck with it, It's a great feature and hopefully the consumers will enjoy it also.

Jim, thanks for letting me know and I'll check it out. I have heard that about Itunes too.

Jay..thanks for the pointers.  You are correct on the microphone being sooo important in the audio chain.  If you ask Santa for an RE 20 Electrovoice mike...you will have been a very good boy this year to get one.  They sell for close to $400 but you can not pop it, it delivers rich full sound, and is a broadcast standard for many moons.  It is very tough too as you can pound nails with it..built to handle heavy production and on air performance.  Hoping Santa brings me one rather than coal this year...
