A few years ago Jim and I were introduced to Convoy of Hope. It was the fourth one here in Charleston, but we had never heard of it before. But I am so glad that we have been able to be a part of it.
Convoy of Hope is an opportunity for local businesses, churches, and community agencies to come together to provide thousands of people with a message of hope, free groceries, refreshments, health screenings, job fairs, clothing, haircuts, games and activities for children, and much more. All of the goods and services -- which are donated and supplied locally, are provided to guests free of charge.
This all-volunteer outreach mobilizes hundreds of area residents to serve and make a difference in their community. In the past years, 1,000 volunteers from over 70 churches and over 100 businesses partnered together to distribute 100,000 lbs of groceries, medical and dental assistance, haircuts, a children's carnival, clothing, music, lunch, and more to over 5,000 people in the Greater Charleston area. Connections are established through job fairs, churches, government agencies, and community service organizations. Opportunities for ongoing service are made possible by giving volunteers a chance to connect with local residents, making a lasting impression on all who participate.
Convoy of Hope also has a unique Guest of Honor principle in which it takes great pride. The goal at a Convoy of Hope outreach is that every recipient be valued, respected, and treated as a guest of honor. Every aspect of an outreach is based on this principle. On the day of the event, all areas of service demonstrate this principle. We unconditionally love and accept each guest without regard to age, race, physical appearance, or spiritual condition.
The Charleston Convoy of Hope will take place on Saturday, October 20, 2007. It will be held in the parking lot at the end of Cosgrove Avenue in North Charleston. This is the location we used last year, and it was a great site -- plenty of room for everyone that comes out and all of the activities.
This year's Convoy is expected to touch and provide for more than 6000 Charleston residents in need. The past two years that we've been a part have been an amazing experience, and I am expecting nothing less for this year.
