Have you noticed?  It would seem that many folks are having their profiles professionally written.  Or something.  There are a LOT of profiles written in the third person, a la, Seinfeld's "The Jimmy."  They occur on AR, but also on other sites, including personal Realtor home pages.

" Broker Mike Jaquish is faster than a speeding bullet, and Mike Jaquish is more powerful than a locomotive. Mike Jaquish leaps tall buildings in a single bound. Yadda yadda yadda."

Does that sound more euphonious, more credible, more professional, more modest, than: "I'm faster than a speeding bullet. I'm more powerful than a locomotive.  I leap tall buildings at a single bound.  Yadda yadda yadda."

Does it?  Or does it just sound a llittle stuffy and pretentious?  Does the third person approach resonate with the buying public?  Is that grammatical structure more profitable?

Does it sound like Mike Jaquish is getting a third-party testimonial and not puffing about himself?  Shucks, Mike Jaquish knows that you know that Mike Jaquish wrote that glowing stuff himself.  Mike Jaquish didn't hire anyone.  Mike Jaquish's Mom didn't write it.  He doesn't necessarily even believe it, but he sure hopes that someone does.  And Mike Jaquish hopes that no one notices that he talks about himself in the third person.  Well, he hopes that anyone who notices is impressed with Mike Jaquish...

Mike Jaquish wonders if some of the confusion stems from profilers offering too much about themselves and not enough about how the prospective clients' needs are more interesting, or how the local real estate market is thriving, or mortgage issues.

Yadda yadda yadda.

21 Comments on Active Rain Profiles: Are you "The Jimmy?" Third person profiles; what's up with that?

Karen Rice doesn't like to use the third person either.  Karen usually ends up mixing it up.  Karen actually just redid her profile to sound less "stuffy" and sound like she's really talking to people, rather than having someone talk for her.

Mike,

You never cease to maze me with your words and with that note. Yes, I do not like the speeding bullet. It really sounds fake.

Thanks for the kind words, Susan.

Mike,

Your example reminds me of Bob Dole when he ran for president.  You actually made me go back and look at my profile.  I think that first person sounds so much more personable than the third person.

I do not like profiles written in third person, I also wouldnt think anyone should need to hire a professional to write their profile for them.  But I guess it happens!

Steve thinks the people you are speaking of will never read this, because someone else is writing for them, Steve also thinks they are not reading other blogs, just writing about themselves.  But "I" will definately remember this when I write my first. Thanks for the tip.

Sometimes I wonder if the people who write about themselves in the third person, speak that way as well.  I have a friend that does it, rather in a silly manner but not jokingly if that makes sense.  It's odd.

I often joke about everything being all about me but I just can't bring myself to do it in the third person.

Diana,

That would make them the Jimmy...  at least, Mike thinks so...

Thanks for dropping in!
