Looking for a place to take the whole family for a day of mountain music, great food and the best in Appalachian folk arts and crafts? Head for the John C. Campell Folk School in Murphy, North Carolina on October 2-3 for the big Fall Festival.
Fall has always been my favorite season and here in the mountains there's no better way to enjoy a day than to browse the stalls and exhibits of the Fall Festival. The John C. Campell Folk School is located in the Brasstown community. It's an internationally known school dedicated to keeping our mountain arts and crafts alive. Classes are offered year-round in subjects like candlemaking, woodworking and blacksmithing.
But the Fall Festival is a 2 day celebration of all the best of mountain life. There are several stages set up with music that changes hourly, featuring a wide variety of acts varying from local church choirs to bluegrass bands. You can sit on a haybale in the pavilion and watch cloggers or folk dancers recreating a scene straight out of a medieval English country fair.
Wander down the path and you'll find a demonstration of how iron nails were forged one at a time. Take home a hand crafted souvenir of your trip to the mountains from the arts and crafts vendors showcasing the best of the Appalachian folk arts.
And don't miss the food booths! Local church groups and community organizations will be serving up funnel cakes, homemade ice cream, barbecue and more.
The Fall Festival will be open 10 AM -5 PM on Saturday and Sunday. You can find the complete schedule of events on the John C. Campbell Folk School website (Here's a tip from a local - if you arrive on Sunday before noon, the crowds are lighter and it's easy to get a parking space.)
