OK so I had a rant on the radio show today, but it was a justified rant and one which made the phones ring as fellow rantees tried to join our discussion.
Property taxes was the subject matter and the Florida Association of Realtors decision to back the amendment that will appear on the ballot on January 29. FAR will in fact spend $1m of MY MONEY to try and convince the voters of Florida that they should vote YES to the property tax amendment. And yet, I d not know a single Realtor who thinks this is a good idea. FAR did not ask me for my opinion, just my money!
The Governor Charlie Crist told an audience of Realtors this past week that he joped they were enjoying the rest they were getting right now because after the amendment passed, their phones would be ringing off the hook. I confess to questioning what planet our Governor was currently living on!
AT the same time all of this was going on, a University of Florida poll essentially said the vote was too close to call, but what was far more interesting was the breakdown. As you dig deeper into the numbers we discover that those with homes worth less than $200,000 - the group who would in fact benefit the most from the proposed change - were in fact heavily against it, while those with higher value homes and longer term plans who would be much better off keeping Save Our Homes, planned narrowly (64%) to vote for it!
The amendment is confusing and misleading and certainly doesn't take into account the fact that Cities and Counties have the power to ignore it and raise rates anyway!
VOTE NO and send the politicians back to the drawing board where they should come up with what they promised us in the first place.
Rants are AWESOME!!!!!!!! Government will classify you as a non-conformist for expressing your dis-like. You know someone has to do it though.
