The other night I met with some buyer clients of mine who are in escrow right now on a home.  It was time to sit down and go over the disclosures etc with them.

We met at a coffee shop to sign the papers and talk about the repair request.  When I pulled out the stack of paperwork for us to go over I think that their eyes were about to pop out of their heads.  The wife looked at me and simply said "that is not all for us to do tonight is it?"  I simply explained to her that it was.

About half way through the process the husband looked up at me and asked "Why would someone even think about buying a home without an agent?".  I asked him what he meant.  He simply explained that he could not understand why someone would even try to go through this process and try to understand all the forms and docs without proper guidance from a Realtor.  I simply looked at him and said "Thank you".

He seemed confused at the response and went on to explain that many people simply do not understand what it is that we as Realtors do for our clients and what he had infront of him was simply the paperwork side of it all.

I tell all my buyer clients that finding them a home is the easy part I earn my money in the escrow process.  They really did not understand that comment until that moment arrived.  They figured that it would have taken them 10 times longer to do it all themselves.

When we were done(which was when we were asked to leave as the coffee shop was closing) I simply thanked them again for appreciating what it is that not just me as their agent but all agents as a whole do for our clients and that many other people do not fully understand it at all.

Sometimes it is just nice to know that at the clients do understand what it is that we do for them and that the money we make is earned and not just given.

My partner is an agent and really enjoys the smiles, thanks and raw appreciation folks show for a job well done.  It's a scary process and a good agent is worth his or her weight in gold!  Sounds like you're doing great things for your clients.

Jason - thank you for your comment.  Your partner is so right.  I love having a deal go smooth, escpecially when you can protect your clients from things that htey do not even need to worry about.  Thank you for your kind words.

It is such a joy when clients appreciate what we do! Most of my clients really do appreciate and understand what we do.

I agree.  I have one listing that continually tells me how much he appreciates me.  It makes me feel good as well as motivate me to work harder to sell his house.

What a touchy, feely good post. We are truly blessed in this profession. I cannot think of one client that I do not consider a friend now.

I even get pictures of the Grand Kids from clients that I had years ago. I always return the email with a "thank you' for sharing! I have helped their children also. I feel sorry for some of the agents I know, they seem to be motivated by money. Guess what? Caring=money. And you get to feel good about yourself.

Thank you for a great post,

Joe - it is always nice to be appreciated.  I have never understood why a buyer wouldn't want to work with an agent.  It makes no sense to do it on their own.

Excellent post... Being appreciated for what you know and do brings a lot of satisfaction as well as renews your energy. There will always be those who don't see your value. When you run across ones who do, isn't it great!

You know Joe, I like your style.  I liked the way you didn't make a big deal about what all agents do but kept it simple and thanked your client instead.  Which then made the client really think through the process instead of being preached to so to speak.  You are a smart one!  It is nice when you get those folks once in awhile who really do understand and appreciate the dedicated effort from their Realtor.  Just one of these clients makes up for the many that are thoughtless and inconsiderate.  A little kindness and understanding and appreciation can go a very long way!

What a great story!  Your clients were right to recognize the tremendous help you were to them but wasn't it nice that they told you?!  You obviously did your job right and they were grateful. Great buyers... :-)

Yes it does feel good, I sure wish more of them would take the time to realize just how hard we do work for them.

Isn't it great when our clients appreciate what we do!

11 years ago when we moved here from another state I sold my own home. We had only been in that state for a few years and didn't have much equity built up.  I was in sales just not real estate sales.  For 3 months I made selling my own home my entire job and it consumed all my time.  I moved to Texas and got my real estate license first thing so I obviously liked it.  What I realized through the process though was all the intricacies involved.  Getting the home in to escrow is one thing but there's a lot of work involved getting it to the closing table.

Joe - What we do so often seems to go unappreciated.  It's clients like these that keep you going.  How wonderful to hear that you've so  beautifully demonstrated your value that your client was prompted to say. "Why would someone even think about buying a home without an agent?".  Way to go, Joe!

I just listed a condo a few weeks ago.  I had it listed and sold about two years ago.  The most recent owner, who I did not represent during their purchase called me to list it.  They knew I did all the work during the last transaction and were ready to upsize and sell.
