Maintenance Tip #7: A Running Toilet

Did you know that one of the biggest ways that households waste water comes from a running toilet. We know that it's happening, but always think that it's only a tiny amount of water and doesn't matter. Well it does matter and if your water is metered, you should take notice.

These are a few simple ways to troublshoot a running toilet. There is a float arm that regulates how much water is to fill up the holding tank. This is the always the first place to start. The arm can be adjusted and can sometimes fix the problem by lowering the arm, thus creating more tension on the water shut off.  Another place to look, is at the chain. Try moving it up a couple of loops and see if that helps. The last thing you can try is to replace the stopper. Over time the stopper looses it's seal and water gets past it. If that doesn't work you may have to bring in a professional.
