When unloading the moving truck at your new destination you will want to be careful when opening the door in case any items shifted during the move. Some items may be leaning towards or against the door leaving them capable of falling out. You will want to be real careful opening the door if you are doing it alone. If you have extra help be sure to have someone assist you when opening to watch for anything that looks like it might fall out. After you have opened the door and accounted for all your items, start to visualize your plan. You should have already planned out what rooms are to receive which items in the truck denoted by markings on each box, crate or other storage container.
It is good idea to have a prewritten plan of attack when moving; one main reason is that you will know what rooms are to receive which items. This will help ensure that you are not moving items more then once and things are going where they are supposed to be. In doing this you will also save a lot of valuable time; for instance, if you have rented the truck or hired movers a plan of attack will cut down on time and help you achieve overall lower moving costs. A plan will also help you stay on track of everything involved in your move and leave you better off with little or no stress. Stress can be very burdensome during a move so it is best to be prepared for the move and keep those stress levels low.
When unloading the truck be sure to start with items on the top first. You do not want to just start grabbing items and moving them. This could start a chain of boxes to start tumbling at your feet or worse could possibly injure someone on the job. Start with items on the top and move down accordingly. This will help ensure that boxes will remain supported from the bottom. When unloading try to have someone organizing or managing the unloading procedure this will help people know where they are going with the items they are carrying. You will also want to have one person dedicated to distributing the items in the truck; this minimizes some of the chaos and can also decrease the chance of someone hurting themselves from improper lifting.
Once most of the boxes are moved, you will want to start unloading any furniture or other large items. Depending on if you are keeping the flooring in the house you may want to unload the large items and/or furniture into the garage or a storage area. Try to use a dolly if provided to move some of the larger items if possible. If you do not have a dolly try to reduce injury by putting the strongest person on the item, rest if needed and make a clear pathway to where the item is going. After the truck is unloaded double check that all items have been returned to the truck including, moving blankets, straps or any other items you have rented from the moving company. You may also want to sweep out the truck before returning it, so you do not get hit with any penalties. Some rental moving companies also have gas regulations, so be sure to fill the tank up or you might end up paying more then a normal gas station would charge you.
