According to Bloomberg.com, Flickr will be adding video sharing to Flickr.com.

"One of our strategies is to put video everywhere you are on the Internet,'' said Folgner, who joined the Sunnyvale, California-based company last year through Yahoo's acquisition of video site Jumpcut. ``We're going to build a much better destination for you to access all this different content."

Some may see this as a good thing, but I'm not so sure. One of the beauties of Flickr is it's simplicity. It does one thing and it does it very, very well. It's clean, easy to use and dominates the photo sharing landscape.

Yahoo! does have a decent video site already in Jumpcut. My guess is that most have never heard of it, however. Which is strange, since Yahoo! certainly has the resources to put it front and center. Jumpcut's upload is a bit slow, but the video is live the moment the upload is complete. It also has some interestng features after you upload. You can reorder, edit, add titles, music, transitions, etc. It's not the simplest interface, but it does work. I don't recommend editing video on the web yet. Unless you like pain, then sure, go right ahead.

To show you the quality of their video, compare the video below with this post using the same video uploaded to Brightcove.

Here is the Jumpcut sample:

Jumpcut also gives you code for a thumbnail, if you choose, and the ability to upload automatically to different blog platforms. It's certainly worth a look.

16 Comments on Flickr Will Be Adding Video "Soon"

I've never even heard of most of these video sites you find. I opened an account on Veoh because I like the ability to ability to comment back and forth with other users, like on You Tube, but I just uploaded a couple of videos and haven't even checked back in over a week. BUT they weren't real estate related. They were just for play.

I must be one of the rare people who would rather read than listen. I'm always concerned about sound for the many people who check our sites during working hours.

Hmmm, videos on flickr, a great idea. How do you feel about video (beta) on Realtor.com?

Jeff,

Thanks for the update. I like the photos I use on Flickr. Is this similar to Youtubue?

Gary I like it. Video for Realtor.com, long overdue.

Jeff, thanks for the tip. I think I kinda like flickr adding video. It'll keep it all in one place for us lazies.

Video is the way to go.  Realtor.com now has 27 photos and Video feature to entice you to upgrade to their Enhancement listing as well.

Reminds me of how MTV started out with a bang hit.  "Video Killed the Radio Star"... and now blogging will incorporate it, "Video Killed the Text Star".  Although you still need text for SEO purposes.

Gary... we've been adding video to Realtor.com for months now and any PicturePath partner could do it for free for you as part of your Enhanced Listing package long before this. So, I see their video addition as being somewhat predatory toward their PicturePath partners. It's obviously the right move for them, however.

Chris... I made my feelings about video clear on the video panel at Inman. For the vast, vast majority of what you do as an agent, I think video is at best overkill and requires skills that 95% of the population do not have. There are good times to use video and bad times to use video. I'll be writing more on this later.

In my view, the Flickr transformation to video is just another foreseeable step in the direction of the cut and paste video player as a commodity.

Organized distribution of videos is where the real value-add is going to be for video. This means getting it not only to your own site and the site of your vendor but also having some sort of organized and automated process to get the videos to places en masse where the subset of people known as prospective buyers are going to actually look at properties.

Do this well...and do it well for everyone (not just people with friends that have highly trafficked websites) and video can provide incredible value. As we have have pointed out in various posts on the topic, video sites tend not be those places and the SEO benefit for videos has proven to be marginal at best.

Think of it like the movie industry. The best indie films show in hundreds of theaters and only a small number of folks are aware of them...even crappy mainstream film are automagically distributed everywhere and everyone knows what films are opening when.

Distribution, distribution, distribution.....

Tony

Tony, you know I agree. Distribution is key. I have yet to hear of a real estate agent getting a lead from youtube.

When I heard about I knew that it would probably be in your blog somewhere so I had to check it out.  :)

The one you did the video of reminds me of what used to be our favorite ride at Six Flags Astroworld before they closed it.  We were so upset.

Thanks for always keeping us posted on new and upcoming techy stuff.  :)
