Located in the center of lush, green, rolling hillsides lies the beautiful town of Douglassville, PA. This is where over 4 years ago my family decided to reside. Great schools, (Daniel Boone School District), clean air, somewhat rural, yet convenient to shopping, recreation, worship, and transportation. We have never regretted our decision to relocate here.

Now, the ugly part. Many of my wonderful new neighbors and friends, who have RECENTLY moved into our area, have been plagued with overly exhorbitant property taxes. Homes that sell for $280,000 to $500,000 with living areas between 2800 to 3800 square feet, have been assessed property taxes  between $12000 to $14000 and higher. Now, I know that we have grown very quickly, and that we lack a non residential tax base. In fact, I invite companies wishing to relocate to seriously consider our area. But there is no reason that this should place an unnecessary and unexpected tax burden such as I described on these already financially strapped families. My home is 2800 square feet and my property taxes are around $6000. High, but not unreasonable. My friends taxes are unreasonable, unfair, and immoral.

Now, I also know that a County wide reassessment would perhaps remedy most of these discrepancies, but why should these good people have to wait for that to obtain relief.

I call on our devoted public servants either in Berks County, Harrisburg, or Washington to address this problem ASAP. I pray that some of those reading this know how relief can be obtained and these families can begin to enjoy the benefits of living in our community.

This is really shocking, Fran. I don't know how people ever afford such high and unfair property taxes. I hope you are able to help solve this issue sometime soon.

btw, I really enjoyed reading your blog and I subscribed to it !

I hope you have a wonderful day,

The inequities in property taxes are out of control.  It would be nice to see a better solution for everyone.  Property tax reform is desprately needed in this state.  While a reassesment would help those with extremely high taxes it would be just as hurtful to many of the lower income home owners whose taxes would go up.  There needs to be a better solution!

Neighbor from Leesport,

Excellent assessment of the tax situation. I would have preferred to see the bill which never made it through H-burgh last year: Eliminate all school real estate taxes in favor of an across the board sales tax on all goods of 4%. Why was this bill not enacted? Thanks,   Fran

Fran - I'm in the same boat as your new neighbors.

What's really bad is that if you buy land and then build a new house on the land, you have no idea what your taxes will be until after the house is built and the local tax assessor comes around.

Personally, I think that if Harrisburg is not going to address tax reform, a county-wide reassessment should be done.  People who have owned  their current home for some time are naturally resistant to the idea of reassessment. They are afraid that their assessments will go up, and their taxes will also be higher.   If you think about it, property taxes support the operations of the public schools, local government, and county government.  A reassesssment coupled with the subsequent (and partial) shift of tax burden from newer home buyers to long-time residents would force more people to question why schools and government cost so much, and to demand better cost control over their expenses.

Thanks for your comments. I agree. Why should we tax 'The American Dream' so much. It's becoming the American Nightmare.   Fran

Our leaders keep "going to the well" on the tax payers dime! My one complaint about PA is that every little town has its own group of "leaders", its own police force, School district, etc. I think a more centralized plan such a county wide system would help the entire county front the bill for and certain areas that are developing.

My husband and I are considering buying one of the homes you mention, but the taxes are scaring us away.  Just don't see how we can afford $13K in taxes!

MM,

My sister recently bought one of those homes close to ours...her taxes were over $11,000.00 per year...she immediately filed a request with the Berks County Board of Assessment Appeals to have her assessment reduced...this request must be submitted by August 15 for the request to have an effect on the next years taxes...In any event, she has not had a final determination but I realistically expect her taxes to be reduced by at least 40% or more!!! If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to call me at Patriot Land Transfer, Inc.  610.495.9855

Thanks,   Fran
